Fast, Deep, and Hidden
The “River of News” description of RSS has been popular and used by A level bloggers like Dave Winer for years. Only recently we are coming to understand that Twitter is moving that to the next level, in ways that will profoundly affect business models, politics, and regulation.
Business models are immediately in danger. Much like the underground stream that erodes rock caverns and subsoil before a sudden and catastrophic failure, a lot of the trends become visible as a sinkhole that suddenly appears beneath a building or street. The hollowing effect of the news cycle in both print and on-air has gone on for years, with the facade of pop culture, entertainment and commercial enterprise built on the foundation. From the outside, it looks much the same, but one by one the footings drop.
New media’s challenge is to invent the business model that will allow people to ride along, profit from and traverse the river.
