HDTV Paradox

by Andrew McCaskey
They are Not Following Along

If you are a TV Executive, you have a lot on your mind – and it is not put at ease by the latest Forrester report that notes – as an aside to home networking issues and opportunities – that the adoption and uptake of HDTV is concentrated in the over-40 set – not younger viewers. That may have something to do with the price point for young families, but that has not seemed to hold down consumption in other areas. And the earliest adopters who should be climbing on the bandwagon are not.

HD monitors for gaming – that might be another story entirely. But the demographic trend that favors PC’s in twenty and thirty year olds is not the sort of long term business that a thinking network executive wants to see. Yet, the report stated that for entertainment, that demographic has yet to get with the program.

Maybe it has something to do with the programming – I am just that close to sending DirecTV to the edge. If I figure the cost per hour for Television consumed, it’s already in the list of some of the most expensive items I enjoy. As opposed to Comcast. Of course that’s internet only – that pipe hits the cable modem and does not stop anywhere along the way. Roughly the same dollars per month.. Hours of use ? about 18 times more.
