Mozilla Raindrop Simply Hits the Target
by Andrew McCaskey
Mozilla Raindrop Solving a Real Problem
There has got to be some real potential for Mozilla Foundation’s Raindrop. It seems to solve some real annoyances in the way that we interact with our message streams, but does so in a way that could really get some mainstream adoption and extend the life of the email/IM/Twitter/RSS feed ecosystem with intelligent filtering and front end processing. By contrast, Google Wave reportedly innundates with even more noise and data. Mozilla Foundation is providing what we need – tools that simplify.
The release seems to be in very early stages- but Mozilla might be surprised to find out how quickly this could resonate with users and move into the mainstream .
The strength is in attaching some intelligent weighting to the stream of information that comes through our email inboxes each day. Simple confirmations, receipts, newsletters and other low priority traffic makes it through the spam filters but still provides a miserable experience. Simple UI intelligent folders, flags and colors add to the visual confusion, not helping. The Raindrop interface would be a real benefit to millions of email users.
Most importantly being open source, it could lend itself to hundreds of variants – which could be freely distributed to various demographic groups or applications. You could easily imagine the usefulness of having messages pre-sorted or presented in prioritized order for seniors who are increasingly active, but still easily overwealmed by the sheer volume of email traffic, even as their children and grandchildren move to SMS, Twitter or similar platforms.
