Murdoch -v- Google

by Andrew McCaskey
Master of the Universe

We all got a good laugh last week when Rupert Murdoch announced that he was going to pull his NewsCorp content from Google.

It may not be that simple.

Mahalo CEO Jason Calacanis, who used to work for Murdoch’s Digital Chief Jonathan Miller when the two were at AOL, posted a simple suggestion: Not only should Murdoch de-index from Google, but he should get Bing to pay him for the exclusive right to index it. If other media companies joined Murdoch Google could actually find itself in a very difficult position, where Bing had content that Google didn’t. If you knew that Wall Street Journal and, say, New York TImes content was only in Bing search results, mainstream search users would suddenly have a big reason to go to Bing.

This would shift the balance of power away from search engines and to the content sites – if they could pull it off. Bidding wars over rights to index content would conceivably break out between Google and Microsoft.

In spite of what we see in the movies, the title Master of the Universe does not get thrown around lightly.

Missed One At Homeland Security

by Andrew McCaskey
Moss is Great, but Where is Schneir ?

CNET reports that

Jeff Moss, founder of computer security conferences DEFCON and Black Hat, has been sworn in as one of the new members of the Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC) of the DHS. Moss, who goes by the handle ‘the Dark Tangent’ says he was nominated to bring an ‘outside perspective’ to its meetings. He said, ‘ I think they needed a skeptical outsider’s view because that has been missing.’

Before running his computer conferences, Moss also worked in the information system security division at Ernst & Young.) Some criticsmn and fears in the community that his hacker cred had been blown – f orever. But it is good to know that the Administration is working the problem and involving some credible people. The only question I have is where is columnist and author Bruce Schneier ? He brings the perspective of .. well, … perspective when looking at technology, operational security and common sense. That’s the combination that’s needed.

Moss, who goes by the handle 'the Dark Tangent' says he was nominated to bring an 'outside perspective' to its meetings. He said, ' I think they needed a skeptical outsider's view because that has been missing.'

Before running his computer conferences, Moss also worked in the information system security division at Ernst & Young.) Some criticsmn and fears in the community that his hacker cred had been blown - f orever. But it is good to know that the Administration is working the problem and involving some credible people. The only question I have is where is columnist and author Bruce Schneier ? He brings the perspective of .. well, ... perspective when looking at technology, operational security and common sense. That's the combination that's needed.

Spectrum Inventory – Worth the Wait

by Andrew McCaskey
Well Worth the Money and the Wait

Some government studies are worth the effort and expense. Let’s hope that the Radio Spectrum Inventory Act, introduced by John Kerry (D-MA), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Bill Nelson (D-FL), and Roger Wicker (R-MS) makes the cut.

The proposed law amends part of the Communications Act by adding a requirement for a national survey of portions of the spectrum are actually in uses. Not only who is licensed to operate, but who actually used the resource. The survey will cover everything from 200MHz to 3.5GHz, and will be run by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and the Federal Communications Commission.

What’s even better is that the bill also requires that this information be published in web-accessible form in near real-time. This is one example of transparency that could pay large dividends when coupled with white space devices and insure that at least one natural resource is being wisely used.

Commerce, UFO’s and Disorder

by Andrew McCaskey
A Case of the Nerves

There have been a number of news items that I have not been forwarding on during SDRNews. One of the stories today concerned Astronauts and UFO’s. Several stories surrounding what I have begun to call the “Reset-Recession”. Filter out the NSFW items and the Top Ten lists, and most of the news items that are coming through the close to sixty feeds that I monitor have been on that fine line between Pop Culture and Trivia. Steve Wozniak announces as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. Conan explodes on Baron.

There is a lot of good content, of course – but there seems to be a trend to insert “News of the Weird” and get it elevated and voted up on sites that have that model. It’s probably a natural reaction to the continuous drumbeat of bad news that we’ve had, and will continue to pound us for the rest of 2009. The wheels of commerce may have ground to a halt, but with all those extra hours online there are a lot of people putting forth their best efforts to entertain, amuse and pass time.

I’m going to continue to filter most of it out – but it sure slows me down in the read and enjoy mode.

–Your Comment Title Here–

by Andrew McCaskey
Listening to Customers

It occurs to me that Microsoft and the Detroit car companies have some degree of similarity, with both giants suffering through some down times because they listened to customers. One got slapped down just a little bit faster, and the other will have a longer road to recovery.

Detroit enjoyed a good fifteen year run – cresting in the early 2000′s- producing SUV’s. They were listening to customers who were voting with their pocketbooks, in spite of the CAFE driven sedan products. In fact, at least one of the Big 3 privately said that their strategic intent was to get out of the car business, and concentrate on building products that were both desired by customers and were highly profitable. In order to keep the marketing machine moving – and with the assumption of continued low gas prices, vehicles like the Hemi-powered SUV were pulled back from the grave.

Those customers were served up by a dealer network, parts suppliers and other stakeholders. They all had a part of the SUV business.

At the same time that auto makers were listening to their customers, Microsoft was doing the same: Listening to their customers. Getting trounced on security loopholes and the media production capabilities by Apple, the game plan was to make Vista the “Most Secure OS ever”. In order to get the type of content that Apple had negotiated with the studios, Microsoft sought out the content protection / DRM armoring that the studios and producers demanded. In order to keep suppliers firmly in the Windows camp, Vista was engineered to pull through ever increasing levels of memory and processing hardware upgrades. XP was ready for the trash-heap.

Those customers were served up by a dealer network, integrators, suppliers and other stakeholders – particularly in enterprise accounts. They all had a part of the PC refresh business.

Both camps have had a slapdown. I guess you have to listen to a wide spectrum of customers – not just the ones that you like to listen to.

by Andrew McCaskey
Listening to Customers

It occurs to me that Microsoft and the Detroit car companies have some degree of similarity, with both giants suffering through some down times because they listened to customers. One got slapped down just a little bit faster, and the other will have a longer road to recovery.

Detroit enjoyed a good fifteen year run - cresting in the early 2000's- producing SUV's. They were listening to customers who were voting with their pocketbooks, in spite of the CAFE driven sedan products. In fact, at least one of the Big 3 privately said that their strategic intent was to get out of the car business, and concentrate on building products that were both desired by customers and were highly profitable. In order to keep the marketing machine moving - and with the assumption of continued low gas prices, vehicles like the Hemi-powered SUV were pulled back from the grave.

Those customers were served up by a dealer network, parts suppliers and other stakeholders. They all had a part of the SUV business.

At the same time that auto makers were listening to their customers, Microsoft was doing the same: Listening to their customers. Getting trounced on security loopholes and the media production capabilities by Apple, the game plan was to make Vista the "Most Secure OS ever".

Those customers were served up by a dealer network, integrators, suppliers and other stakeholders - particularly in enterprise accounts. They all had a part of the PC refresh business.

Both camps have had a slapdown. I guess you have to listen to a wide spectrum of customers - not just the ones that you like to listen to.

You Better Own Your Cloud

by Andrew McCaskey
No Matter How Fine

No Matter how trustworthy – no matter how convenient – the cloud gives and the cloud can take away. There is lots of emerging enthusiasm for the Google GDrive. Just like GMail, it’s going to be incredibly convenient and versitile. Just remember that it is not the place where you want to have as a single point of failure for anything that might be important to you. Anything that is uniquely yours, that aggregates hundreds of hours of work, your contact information stores, or memories that your future will value above all else, that’s the digital stuff that we are talking about.

Family photos, videos and business contacts and agreements or resources are too important to entrust to local hardware alone. A crash on your local drive or fire at your business is one risk for loss of data, so offsite storage without administration hassle or expense is tempting.

The convenience factor is substantial, and the advantages of being able to pull business and personal data from some arbitrary machine wherever you happen to be located is a powerful siren call. It’s going to take substantial willpower not to be lulled into a sense of security – but resist you must. Because any cloud based service that can be given, can be taken away. And any data that you have carefully or casually stored into that cloud.

One of the most intriguing products of CES was a device, less than $100 called the Pogoplug. Pogoplug will enable you to place an arbitrary USB drive – or portions of it – as an addressable IP device. Select a 500GB or 1TB drive, make it a portion of your network, then physically position a similar unit at another family member’s home. Use the cloud freely and enjoy the convenience and flexibility. Just make sure that once every few hours there is a sweep of your new data to your counterpart, and their new data to you.

That’s into a cloud that you control and manage both physically and administratively.

Make some plans, use the new GDrive Cloud, but just remember to sweep up behind yourself.

People Between Jobs

by Andrew McCaskey
People Between Jobs

Every SDRNews listener – and the host – have at one time been between jobs. There are lot of people between jobs. A lot of listeners between jobs. And, it’s time to bring SDRNews to the challenge.

Beginning next Wednesday January 21 , we will begin hosting a live edition of SDRNewsroom specifically for listeners who are between jobs. It’s an experiment, building on community outreach experience that I have had on a part time basis for the past six years.

The objective is a forum for SDRNews listeners who are up to the challenge of attempting an online video presentation. A chance to use the power of other listeners to focus on building skills presenting experience and qualifications to others. It just happens to be in virtual space.

SDRNewsroom is live video, along with a dial in line phone bridge and integrated uStream chatroom. It is going to be rough, but the format that I have in mind will consume no more than one hour.

To present, you need your game on: A good connection, a telephone headset, a well lit webcam on Skype or Gmail video, and no more than three Powerpoint slides. You have five minutes on camera to pitch your career field, background and type of position/location you seek, then five to ten minutes of interview like questions and coaching from the host and audience.

If you are up to the challenge, it should be a great chance to demonstrate your elevator pitch, presentation skills and question handling abilities. I figure we can handle four or five people during the hour.

If you are between jobs and do not want to present, join us and offer chat room comments and dial in for the discussion. There will soon be a PBJ tab on the sdrnews.com site with a special community space for you to link up with others who are in the same boat, help each other with resumes and strategies – and get of fresh set of eyes on your job search efforts.

Every SDRNews listener – and the host – has at one time been between jobs.

This first show will start at 1:00PM Eastern, 10:00AM Pacific. email your materials in advance to pbj at sdrnews.com

Pay it back, or pay it forward – let me know if you are prepared to step up to the plate.

I just did.

What’s in Store this Week at CES

by Andrew McCaskey
TechPodcast Network

There is going to be lots of video later in the week. Here’s what to expect in the Techpodcast Network coverage of CES.

I arrive in Las Vegas Monday 1/5 ,followed up shortly by Jeffrey Powers of Geekazine podcast. We will be getting our initial set up done on Tuesday, and as soon as Todd Cochrane from Geek News Central arrives on the Redeye flight from Honolulu we will begin to get organized, credentialed and staked out. Andy Brown will join us from Chicago, and we’ll be ready to go.

We have two big pre-show events, beginning Tuesday night – the CES Unveiled and then on Wednesday the Pepcon reception. These are both “Press Only” events where we will get an advanced peek at some of the products that will be revealed for the first time at CES. A lot of the information will be embargoed – in other words we will be shooting video but will not be able to release it until the official opening of the CES show on Thursday.

There will be as many as three channels of video active at various times during the week, and all at the site at SDRNEws.com.

All will be announced on Twitter @axmc

TPN Backchannel. This is the real story of the behind the scenes activities at CES – what it is like to cover the show as a podcaster. If you thought SDRNewsroom was reality TV you will see that it is super professional compared with the backchannel. You will meet the team and we will punch up video as quickly as we can to realtime, depending on where we are, what bandwidth we have, and what we have to report.

SDRNewsroom – streaming live when and where we can. Most of the time we will be using the EVDO and embedded SDRNewsroom chatroom. This channel will go up and down, but will be recorded for later playback.

TPOD: The formal product interviews, our TPN Pick of the Day and product selection.

I will record a backchannel and may also fire up a live session of the SDRNewsroom on the arrival in Las Vegas Monday night, some initial backchannel video. I will be announcing live sessions on Twitter, so if you follow axmc , geeknews and geekazine you will be in the know as far as the latest on our full up TPN coverage of CES

What's in Store this Week at CES

by Andrew McCaskey
TechPodcast Network

There is going to be lots of video later in the week. Here's what to expect in the Techpodcast Network coverage of CES.

Andy Brown will join us from Chicago, and we'll be ready to go.

We have two big pre-show events, beginning Tuesday night - the CES Unveiled and then on Wednesday the Pepcon reception. These are both "Press Only" events where we will get an advanced peek at some of the products that will be revealed for the first time at CES. A lot of the information will be embargoed - in other words we will be shooting video but will not be able to release it until the official opening of the CES show on Thursday.

There will be as many as three channels of video active at various times during the week, and all at the site at SDRNEws.com.

All will be announced on Twitter @axmc

TPN Backchannel. This is the real story of the behind the scenes activities at CES - what it is like to cover the show as a podcaster. If you thought SDRNewsroom was reality TV you will see that it is super professional compared with the backchannel. You will meet the team and we will punch up video as quickly as we can to realtime, depending on where we are, what bandwidth we have, and what we have to report.

SDRNewsroom - streaming live when and where we can.

Apple’s New Opportunity

by Andrew McCaskey
Apple’s Second Chance

Apple has a chance to make another big contribution to the world of podcasting. And, it’s not for any altruistic reason – it is another revenue point just waiting to be tapped.

The iTunes Music store happened at the right time to build the base of podcasting – a podcatcher or receiver that interfaced directly with an extremely popular portable player, within a trusted user interface. Apple immediately benefited from a wealth of user generated content, available for free that would draw people to the iTunes music store. The music discovery process on some podcasts undoubtably drove business to the Apple iTunes Music Store. And, as time passed, the independent podcasts were generally replaced (at least in the Top 100) by corporate produced content.

Here’s a chance for Apple to make some more money The rumored podcast download capability on the next iPhone software upgrade could be an opportunity for Apple to cash in on a large part of that user generated media. Very simply, use the App store ecommerce engine (already tied to the phone number and credit card) to process monthly subscription payments for podcasts. Say $2 or $3 a month. Then, the podcaster could present two feeds- one feed including advertising content, the other paid subscription being ad free. A listener could make the choice, the podcaster (just like the iPhone app programmer) could receive payment for those listeners who chose to upgrade, Apple could rake 30% off the top, and the listener could elect to listen to the regular program, including ads, just as before. End of the month, the timer points back to the version with ads – or the podcaster could set up annual subscription plans.
