Coffee Shop War Strategy
by Andrew McCaskey
The Most Effective Way to Clear the Coffee Shop
In New York ( and Seattle) a confrontation is brewing because of wifi-seeking laptops. From the perspective of the cafe owner, they are space hogs that arrive, buy one cup and then settle in for the next four hours, blocking a seat from paying customers. I’ve got some sympathy there, if there are truly customers turned away or discouraged from entry due to no available seats. On the other hand, especially during non-peak hours, it is probably a good thing that people are more or less camped out – a store full of regulars that have some positive view of the cafe, as opposed to an empty store.
I’ve found that most coffee shops self limit things anyway, just by the simple mechanism of offering few AC outlets. Unless there is some cooperative interaction among patrons, that’s going to keep a good portion of the seats open as well.
The other side of the story are those who seek a coffee shop experience and find their favorite store filled with freelancers.
The most effective way to clear the store ? Keep pushing the Pike Place and stop brewing real coffee. That will drive your coffee drinkers out and problem is solved. It seems to be working.
