Two Bucket Solar

Thirty years ago, I remember an engineering colleague joking about the Two Bucket solution to the energy problem. (That would be the one we declared war on). Anyway, he said that solar power would become real the day he could go to the local hardware store and buy two buckets of paint (P and N), and pick up some clip leads from the display on the way out the door, all ready for a weekend’s work on the garage roof.
Researchers at the University of Texas have developed a method to create photovoltaic panels at one-tenth the cost of existing technologies using nanoparticle “inks” to generate electricity from the sun. That would allow solar panels to be painted on rooftops or the sides of buildings.
Currently the spray-on panels are just 1 percent efficient, while existing panels can reach 25 percent efficiency or more — using the nanoparticles can potentially boost efficiency because of the tiny size of the materials .Other future uses for the technology could include a semi-transparent layer that would allow windows to double as solar cells.
