      You Can’t Make it Up Through Volume

      Disturbing news from the Silicon Valley Insider – a Credit Suisse report shows that YouTube is losing close to $420Million a year – and even deep pockets are not unlimited. They ascribe most of the problem to user generated content, that seems to become lower in quality the deeper into the catalog that you go. And there seems to be no clear business model that will allow Google to pull near term revenues in significant amounts, while the direct expenses of increased volume only grow each day.

      Living through a transition is both interesting and a bit scary. We are grappling with the most exciting technology and societal transformation but are also in a time where just because you can do something is not necessarily the reason to do something. As YouTube has proven, you can create an incredible distribution engine – estimated at around 85 Billion video streams per year but yet still not quite make a connection to the revenue that is needed to make it a profitable venture.

      As the Insider pointed out, Google has already passed the production learning curve and economies of scale. There’s nothing to look forward to in materialy reducing costs on one side of the ledger. The next 18 months will see if there’s a model that can improve performance on the other side.

      It may be that Boxee, Apple TV, various Media Manager products finally get their distribution, indexing and User Interface issues resolved, turn things up, and find that their most famous actor has decided to retire early.

        Open Source Evil

        The Real Cornficker

        It’s not about training, but that’s the real by-product. I suspect that the Cornficker worm – primed and ready to go off April 1st has been put together for blackmail or economic reasons. The educational factors are the unintended consequence that are probably more so than the present variant that’s supposedly to explode in less than ten days.

        The worm started as a mundane example – targeted at the systems with ignorant or lazy owners, with an attack vector that had already been closed by the sysops that were on the ball. Version B was the step to the big leagues, adding peer-to-peer functionality, disabling firewall protection, and running a variable command and control system from a list of domains.

        Version C of Conficker amp’ed it up and extended peer to peer, with digital code-signing, so it only accepts trusted code updates from itself. That means security experts can’t simply inject code to neutralize it.

        The big danger April 1st is not what happens – it is the fact that malware authors are watching and learning.. It’s been termed evil open source.

        I don’t think that’s the primary motivation – there is too much into this thing for an inverted altruism to be in play. Just follow the money, and see what’s for hire April 2nd.

          Getting Over the Seattle Post Intelligencer

          Stronger Than Ever – After the Reset

          The announcement that the Seattle Post-Intelligencer will cease publication on paper is being lamented far and wide. I suspect that we will get over it, quickly. The “paper” will continue to publish, online. And, let us hope there will be some archival hard copies burned off for the King Country Courthouse records each day. The real paper will outlive the need for publishing on cellulose.

          As much as we like to lament the passing of newspapers throughout the country, Clay Christensen’s Innovator’s Dilemma again offers an explaination, of sorts. The disruptive technology (blogs ,user generated content and internet based delivery in this case) initially delivers an inferior product. The established technology offers a few enhancements which do little but increase their costs, and the upstart begins to encroach with more and more application.

          Newspapers or journalists / journalism is needed as much or more in the coming years than in the past. In fact, finding a voice and finding an audience will perhaps become easier in the new delivery system than in the old.

          What we are lamenting is the passing of a business model, and fearing what comes next. After all the advertiser supported one has worked for a few hundred years and we are awfully comfortable with it. Besides, the home of the Kindle is just on the other side of the I-5 Freeway.

            This one Should be in Line

            One That Should Be There

            Here’s one industry that should be at the public assistance line: A consortium to insure that the US has the capability to not only perform basic research and invention of the batteries needed for automotive, wind, solar and other energy sources (and sinks) but the manufacturing capacity to carry it through.

            The Obama Administration could not find a better, more highly visible and politically savory initiative for announcement before the end of January. A concerted effort to pull together a variety of researchers, National Laboratories and leading manufacturers to act as the sole target for Federal money offers the best of both worlds: A way to demonstrate decisive action politcally, and a way to focus the aspirations and skill development of workers on jobs that have a future.

            The other benefit that such public involvement would bring would be some serious light on the entire subject of energy storage for vehicles. Earlier this year there were a series of articles on the “ultracapacitor” storage cells from EEstor, a Texas startup with heavy funding and links into major defense contractors. The only trouble is, their page is “Under Construction, and if they are making introductions in 2009 as promised, they need to get cracking.The internet abounds with crackpot schemes to run automobiles on water, as Snopes Debunks Various Water Fuel schemes. Some government oversight, funding, and credibility will go a long way towards some serious progress.

The Obama Administration could not find a better, more highly visible and politically savory initiative for announcement before the end of January. A concerted effort to pull together a variety of researchers, National Laboratories and leading manufacturers to act as the sole target for Federal money offers the best of both worlds: A way to demonstrate decisive action politcally, and a way to focus the aspirations and skill development of workers on jobs that have a future. The other benefit that such public involvement would bring would be some serious light on the entire subject of energy storage for vehicles. Earlier this year there were a series of articles on the "ultracapacitor" storage cells from EEstor, a Texas startup with heavy funding and links into major defense contractors. The only trouble is, their page is "Under Construction, and if they are making introductions in 2009 as promised, they need to get cracking.The internet abounds with crackpot schemes to run automobiles on water, as Snopes Debunks Various Water Fuel schemes.               Apple’s Narrow Enterprise Window

              How Narrow is the Window ?

              Apple’s foray into the enterprise is going to be short lived. While Vista stumbled and corporations refused to go along with the business as usual upgrades in hardware and OS changes as they had since the days of Windows 3.1, Apple made several bold moves. It may still not be sufficient to crack the enterprise in a meaningful way.

              Two masterful moves on Apple’s part positioned them for possible success in the general business realm, beyond the realm of creatives and similar pockets around the corporation. First, the move to the Intel platform from PowerPC removed both physical and psychological barriers that removed some hostility from IT types. Secondly, the virtualization of Parallels or dual boot capabilty of Boot Camp reduced the risk by allowing the machines to run XP (or Linux) without risking legacy applications or productivity tools such as the MS Office suite.

              On the home front, Mac’s continued their assault at the high end of the consumer marketplace. Likewise, the sleek MacBook Pro became the executive status symbol – and even Walt Mossburg of the Wall Street Journal proclaimed the Windows Laptop of the Year to be… the MacBook. The iPhone’s smashing introduction if not adoption by the Blackberry crowd further established Apple (no longer Apple Computer) as a serious contender.

              It is Good Fortune. And, it’s all going to end soon. The economy, cloud applications, netbooks and competition are going to stop Apple’s enterprise march dead in its tracks. Enterprise IT is still going to slow roll adoption, and hope for Windows 7 to provide what Vista has not.

              It’s not over for Apple, though: As millions of professionals leave those corporations in layoffs, bankruptcies, and forced retirements – they turn to their home computers and find, to their surprise that the Apple is a perfect fit for their new life. The Enterprise just moved back home.

                Nine Lives of Radio

                Satellite is Going to Need All of Them

                The biggest news story of today is the prediction of the demise of Satellite Radio within the next two years, advanced by Roger Elgan at Datamation. Elgan is a fan of the exclusive content that suits his tastes that’s not available on AM/FM radio. But he thinks the world is moving to fast for satellite radio to keep up, and notes that Sirius XM has $3.4 billion in long-term debt, $1 billion of which is due next year — $300 million of that due by February.

                Here are the reasons:

                Every smartphone with mp3 – like the iphone – is a satellite radio competitor. And, that smart phone goes along for the ride in the car.

                Automobiles are mp3 ready – not only with mp3 jacks but increasingly with mobile broadband- just the wifi hotspot needed by the smartphone. Add in purchased mp3 tracks – or if you don’t like that, fire up Pandora.

                Podcasting kicks talk radio, and real-time podcastcasting like Blog-Talk radio removes the one advantage for local news and sporting events. Plus, downloadable time shifting as a bonus.

                And the biggest source of new satellite subscribers ? Purchasers of new cars, especially GM, Ford and Chrysler.

                Looks like a pretty grim list. But, as the Ken Burns PBS special Empire of the Air pointed out, radio (in terrestrial form, at least) has been knocked down for the count before. And each time it has reinvented itself in some way, and morphed into another form that aligned with the needs of the market. If satellite radio was the Great White Hope of radio in the late 20th Century, that might have been life number seven or eight. There are not many left.

                    Will It Scale ? Let’s Hope Not

                    The video today concerns the full attack that was conducted against Estonia – a bit of public awareness on the scope and severity of botnet attack on a small but well defended country.

                    The early hours of the attack concentrated upon newspapers, banks, radio and television sites and other critical infrastructure. Sound like a familiar strategy ? The quick reaction of the Estonians to purposely disconnect their networks from the outside world preserved their systems, and only through the cooperation of sys admins around the world was the attacking botnet neutralized one IP block at a time.

                    The question raised by the video is not will the attack scale – but will it scale quickly enough to be an offensive weapon against a determined defender. Conversely, if the defender is not payng attention the scale might not be nearly as important.

                    It is hard to imagine the effect that a well timed cyber attack, in combination with perhaps 40 cities under attack by two man teams operating along the lines of the DC mobile snipers in the days immediately after 9/11.

                    Hard to realize the damage that could be caused by less than 100 bad guys and say $100Million to hire a botnet for a weekend. That’s even more to be concerned about than $7 a gallon gasoline.

                    Funny, I’ve never heard this in any of the debates. Takes too long to tell the story.

                        TerraByte – One Year Later

                        Roughly one year ago, we began to see Terrabyte capacity drives appear on retail shelves – first at the $1000 price point, then dropping to $500 and I think now around $230. I’m not in the market for that sort of storage right now.

                        I was trying to describe to my wife what a terrabyte was, and I mentioned it to my middle daughter during a phone call. She said “get over it Dad – we’ll have it on a cell phone within a few years”.

                        Not exactly on time and in a different form factor – the new announcement from University of Arizona moves the date out to 2009, price unknown but eventually knowable. They set the new nanotech based storage into a USB stick form factor.

                        Annette, it looks like you have your finger on the pulse . Now you may be able to tell your rapidly aging father what we might do with that 1TB of memory in a USB thumbdrive or cellphone.

                            The TSA article and commentary from Computerworld are right on the money. Traveling with as many as three laptops, plus the normal geek basic load of goodies, I’m very familiar with the process.

                            The TSA and manufacturers have teamed up to offer bags that enable you to carry a laptop and NOTHING ELSE. No cables, no power blocks, no cube taps, no Wireless mouse, no thumb drives. This will scan beautifully. Only trouble is, it then breaks the two item carry on rule – one of which is the garmet bag/rollaboard.

                            Only a bureaucrat assisted by the National Luggage Dealer’s Association (founded in 1925) could have thought this one up.

                                Today’s video concerns a social engineering vulnerability – using default PIN and password settings. The example involves a Bluetooth headset and the default pin of 0000 used to mate with a cellphone. It could just have easily been focused upon the 30% of home owners that install garage door openers and leave the factory default setting untouched. All a thief has to do is purchase a garage door opener, cruise slowly through the neighborhood and give it a try.
