      IMdB Opportunity for MPAA

      The Movie Industry Could Get Ahead of the Curve

      CNET reported that MDb founder Col Needham’s SXSW Q&A contained the idea that the massively popular movie database has set a long term goal to add one-button streaming for all of the 1.3 million titles it indexes. It might take a decade, and there are tremendous hurdles to be ovecome, but he explained how he wants to make it possible for the 57 million monthly unique visitors to the site to watch, with the click of one button, all the movies, TV shows, and other video content indexed on the site.

      Already, IMDb has begun adding streaming content to the site, a program that began in September. Right now, Needham said, there are 14,000 full-length TV episodes and a couple of thousand full-length movies available on the site, as well as 120,000 other pieces of video content, many of which are movie trailers, interviews, and featurettes.

      The MPAA would like us to think this proposal is unreal – but if the right business model comes along they may want to consider it. Sort of like RIAA and Napster about ten years ago, with 30 million people willing to pay $10 a month for legal services. Now the MPAA faces a similar choice.

      Thirty percent of something might be better than one hundred percent of nothing.

        CNN’s Peer-to-Peer Network

        Trying to Get Out in Front

        If there ever was a media outlet that is trying to get out in front of the implosion in the tradtional media, it is CNN. And they do a remarkable job. They might want to have been just a bit more open on this one, before the tech world blows this out of proportion.

        This being an absolutely ‘Lawyers Run Amok’ End User License agreement (EULA) that is going to get traction in the blogosphere and could easily get partially reported and pulled out of context. It is lengthy, detailed, and explicit that as soon as you choose to watch a live video event on CNN, you have just donated your machine and your bandwidth to the cause. That’s the way that P2P works, but CNN was probably the first to draw attention to it in a way that is easily parsed and distributed.

        Joost was the first high visibility system with P2P distribution – but the potential adverse publicity was minimal. That may not be the case here – due in no small part to some in-depth reporting by WindowsSecrets.com. Not only was it in depth, there were some judgments embedded in the report, with headings like Deceptive Marketing, Cost shifting to ISP’s and End Users, Ludicrous Licensing terms, and Security Vulnerabilities.

        Windows Secrets builds a good case that CNN has written a pretty one sided document, pushed on generally un-suspecting users, and offloading costs and responsiblity.

        On second thought – maybe the lawyers didn’t run amok. They may have been guilty of clarity. And for the legal profession that is a serious conviction.

            A Well Insulated Cable

            Regardless of the Wall Street turbulence that we will see this week, there is one set of stocks that is pretty well insulated from economic downturn. As Wired Magazine noted Wired Blog:Why Cable will survive, Americans love their TV. And although satellite and telco providers have been making some inroads, they have had little success.

            Of course, early adopters or the NPR crowd already get their entertainment online and their movies from NetFlix. But they still have to get their net connection. And it’s becoming increasingly obvious that for many people, that cable modem is going to be one of the last things that is going to get cut out of the household budget, even if it is right up there with the house payment, medical care, and food.

            The one industry that is really going to be hurting is XM-Sirius. They were almost last years/decade’s story before the economy started to head south. And those millions of iPods are being put to good use – as over the air radio tries for the nth time to re-invent itself and convince us that we really need HD-radio as another commuter choice.

            No doubt some pay-per-view and premium tiers are going to feel the pinch. But that basic level and cable modem is going to be there almost until the lights go out.

As Wired Magazine noted Wired Blog:Why Cable will survive, Americans love their TV. And although satellite and telco providers have been making some inroads, they have had little success. Of course, early adopters or the NPR crowd already get their entertainment online and their movies from NetFlix. But they still have to get their net connection. And it's becoming increasingly obvious that for many people, that cable modem is going to be one of the last things that is going to get cut out of the household budget, even if it is right up there with the house payment, medical care, and food. The one industry that is really going to be hurting is XM-Sirius. They were almost last years/decade's story before the economy started to head south. And those millions of iPods are being put to good use - as over the air radio tries for the nth time to re-invent itself and convince us that we really need HD-radio as another commuter choice.                     The article on the Luxfer prism system from the 1880′s is of interest – if only to contrast the forms of architecture that were popular 120 years ago in business forms – with atriums, light and wind shafts and other features that were designed to use as much natural light and ventilation as possible.

                    I wonder how much will really be incorporated in to practical designs as opposed to award winning designs ? My impression is that architectural ideas spread at glacial speed. This one might have the economic drivers to make it move a bit faster.

                            Sleepless Nation and the Four Day Week

                            The experiments being run at 37 Signals with the four day work week merges well with the Sleep Deprived nation study from CDC.

                            I’ve found that – podcasting aside – there are more hours of work that go into the telecommute job than in regular office work. You first have to define work as tasks that, all things being equal, you would probably not spend your time on .

                            The four day week corresponds to the four days that you are working 12 or 14 hours – and generating the sleep deprivation that makes it essential to take the Friday off to have a life. It’s just a shift in the excess that could have been distributed over five days of more or less sane activity, balanced between work, family, personal time and community.

                            It’s going to be interesting to see how their experiment turns out.
