Novell’s Google Wave

by Andrew McCaskey
Novell’s Pulse

The announcement of the first Google Wave application for the enterprise – Novell’s Pulse – is going to be the first step in a journey that is going to take many years to complete. In fact, by the time we get there, it might be unrecognizable. When you consider that the Google Wave is set to displace not only email but collaborative document development and sharing, social media, wiki, and archival functions in an enterprise environment, it’s a tall order, indeed.

Someone has to go first, but you can tell the pioneers by the arrows in the back. It’s going to be a long time before the IT manager of a company that exists today is going to go out on a limb and allow anything like Google Wave into the main shop production.

The growth of such a radical tool has to occur outside the system – and even though Novell is providing the impetus and name brand recognition, I’d not look for improvements or adoption there. Google’s Federation is what’s going to pull Google Wave through, and it’s going to be led by someone who has early access and a Federation Sandbox. And a tolerant spouse or parent who will allow the car to be parked outside the garage for the winter to make room for the server and three of his buddies to set the boardroom up in the garage, where the real Wave innovators are setting up shop.

Net Neutrality: FUD Never Goes Out of Style

by Andrew McCaskey
FUD is Never Out of Style

Ars Technica seems to disassemble the Wall Street Journal’s editorial line by line – and points out that if you are going to argue the points of a technology related case, you might want to have some basic understanding of the economics of the creation and distribution of content. Especially when pointing fingers at deployment of edge servers – presented as a more equitable solution for Google and Microsoft to share the burden with ISP’s – with the idea that instead of campaigning for net neutrality in the political scheme, they should be taking some steps to do the heavy lifting in delivering the bits.

It’s such a good idea that in fact all sorts of organizations have been deploying edge servers to speed delivery of content to customers. The very openness that the ISP’s claim to fear is in fact already offloading their network’s traffic – all for the reason that an open net permits exactly that sort of placement. Without the guarantee of net neutrality, that creative work around would be off limits.

You can bet that in the bad old days, there would have been no placement of “foreign attachments” to the all powerful telco pipes. That battle was fought 41 years ago in the Carterphone decision. We don’t ever want to go back to those days.

Net Neutrality: FUD Never Goes Out of Style

by Andrew McCaskey
FUD is Never Out of Style

Ars Technica seems to disassemble the Wall Street Journal's editorial line by line - and points out that if you are going to argue the points of a technology related case, you might want to have some basic understanding of the economics of the creation and distribution of content. Especially when pointing fingers at deployment of edge servers - presented as a more equitable solution for Google and Microsoft to share the burden with ISP's - with the idea that instead of campaigning for net neutrality in the political scheme, they should be taking some steps to do the heavy lifting in delivering the bits.

It's such a good idea that in fact all sorts of organizations have been deploying edge servers to speed delivery of content to customers. The very openness that the ISP's claim to fear is in fact already offloading their network's traffic - all for the reason that an open net permits exactly that sort of placement. Without the guarantee of net neutrality, that creative work around would be off limits.

You can bet that in the bad old days, there would have been no placement of "foreign attachments" to the all powerful telco pipes. That battle was fought 41 years ago in the Carterphone decision. We don't ever want to go back to those days.

White Fi Debuts

by Andrew McCaskey
Closer to Reality

Prototypes are beginning to emerge from the labs at Microsoft – and presumably other partners in the Whitespace Consortium , and the results seem encouraging. Rather than operating in the congested 2.4 and 5.8 Ghz bands common to various WiFi services, whitespace modems operate at a lower frequency (the UHF TV band) that have much superior propagation characteristics. Ranges of a mile or more are possible.

There are numerous technical challenges – the greatest of which has been the legal requirements of combination of spectrum sniffing and a backup database system. If a licensed service like television broadcast or a database problem, the White-Fi device has to take the dive and shift immediately to alternate channels- presumably out of band in the UHF region.

It’s a difficult assignment – but the flexibility of these intelligent modems are going to be critical in extending infrastructure, if WIMAX turns out to be drtangled in the cradle. It’s always good to have a backup plan.

–Your Comment Title Here–

by Andrew McCaskey
Big Challenge for CEA

Over the Air, plus Digital is enough for me. This CES might well be the final straw that pushes a lot of consumer household out of the television Consumer Electronics mainstream and into an online and over the air mode. It’s equal parts austerity, and it’s frustration.

If you are taking a critical look at your budget – how you spend, what, and why – I’d bet that your cable, satellite TV, satellite radio and DVR are all getting a close look. And compared with the budget item for Fast broadband access – all are on the chopping block at my home. Bandwidth is not discretionary for geeks of almost all income levels, but a lot of the rest of the Consumer Electronics / Content dollar is. Crummy content is going to spill into a lack of hardware and software sales.

Unless the purchase involves computers, unlike most geeks I am firmly in the late majority segment of the consumer market, especially regarding television. The decision to move towards a 42″ 720p screen only 18 months ago is not going to impress anyone with geekly credentials. And, the driver was spouse driven “Flat on the wall” and “what to do about the TIVO” and DirectTV when the conversion came in 2009, not movies, gaming or some other driver. So granted, I am not ripe for an upgrade unless there is some compellng reason (make that content) to incent me to do so.

I’m getting grouchy about content, and if others are like me, that’s having a direct effect on the equipment near and dear to the CES manufacturer’s interests. The packages from DirectTV/Comcast are so full of stuff that I don’t want – the effort to program it out sets up another set of dis-satisfiers. Don’t get me started on XM+Sirius. I don’t even keep up with the RIAA and MPAA’s antics any more, other than to further polish their negative image.

I can get news, entertainment and information online – the only thing that I can’t feed is the background noise wall display. When I could do that easily, it did not bother me. But in today’s economy, I wonder just how much entertainment value I am really geting.

I just hope that the rest of consumers are in a better mood than I am – or that somewhere in the halls of Las Vegas there is something that is worth the most limited commodity of all – the time to watch it.

by Andrew McCaskey
Big Challenge for CEA

Over the Air, plus Digital is enough for me. This CES might well be the final straw that pushes a lot of consumer household out of the television Consumer Electronics mainstream and into an online and over the air mode. It's equal parts austerity, and it's frustration.

If you are taking a critical look at your budget - how you spend, what, and why - I'd bet that your cable, satellite TV, satellite radio and DVR are all getting a close look. And compared with the budget item for Fast broadband access - all are on the chopping block at my home.

The decision to move towards a 42" 720p screen only 18 months ago is not going to impress anyone with geekly credentials. And, the driver was spouse driven "Flat on the wall" and "what to do about the TIVO" and DirectTV when the conversion came in 2009, not movies, gaming or some other driver. So granted, I am not ripe for an upgrade unless there is some compellng reason (make that content) to incent me to do so.

I'm getting grouchy about content, and if others are like me, that's having a direct effect on the equipment near and dear to the CES manufacturer's interests. The packages from DirectTV/Comcast are so full of stuff that I don't want - the effort to program it out sets up another set of dis-satisfiers. Don't get me started on XM+Sirius. I don't even keep up with the RIAA and MPAA's antics any more, other than to further polish their negative image.

I can get news, entertainment and information online - the only thing that I can't feed is the background noise wall display. When I could do that easily, it did not bother me. But in today's economy, I wonder just how much entertainment value I am really geting.

I just hope that the rest of consumers are in a better mood than I am - or that somewhere in the halls of Las Vegas there is something that is worth the most limited commodity of all - the time to watch it.

Seesmic Experiment

by Andrew McCaskey
Today’s video is a continued experiment in the user generated site Seesmic. I am not sure if the Seesmic demographic is a good match to the SDRNews audience, but like the ongoing adventures looking at YouTube I think that it will be a great opportunity to try some different approaches to new media.
One of the areas that I am struggling with is the transition from podcasting to “New Media” in all forms. Podcasting is a smooth transition for most people in my age group who grew up on radio and most particularly radio as the principal source of news while commuting.

An appreciable number of SDRNews listeners consume the program at their desks – and as video (user produced content) begins to grow, I think there is some place for this medium in the mix, without degrading the experience.

Right now, I have the Seesmic program broken into four segments. Is that about right ? or would you prefer a single program slightly longer than the regular audio program ?

Articulating the Changes in the Game

by Andrew McCaskey
Om Malik’s article on the game changing and distuptive nature of the iPhone 3G said that this will be the killer app for 3G wireless service.

To expand upon that theme- we are already seeing POTS voice as a commodity in a saturated marketplace in the wireless world. For the time being, since the US has been lagging, there is an opportunity for wireless service providers to gather profits from SMS at exhorbitant rates. Wireless internet – with the genie out of the bottle and the walled garden is the next big thing as far as wireless service providers.

My own experience with the first gen iPhone and the 2.0 upgrade has gone very, very smoothly. The App Store is going to be one of the most popular features of the iPhone ecosystem, and extending it to the first generation iPhone base is a tremendous incentive to provide a ready market for developers, and provide a source of upgrader customers for the 3G devices, once the utility of the apps is proven.

I’m working through the novelty of Twitter – still learning but gaining some visibility on the use. And, as I add in Apps such as the LiveTimer that we reviewed during the TPN Roundtable, and Evernote – I can see that it’s going to be a constant companion and tool. And that I am going to want that capability as soon as I get some confirmation of 3G coverage on AT&T in areas that I traverse.

GoodBye to Kinkos

by Andrew McCaskey

The official end of Kinko’s clocked in with the change to FedEx Office. The business press reported that the fondness than many have for the 24 hour copy center from their college days has, in recent years failed to translate into profit. They also report that FedEx overpaid for the roughly 700 retail locations.

The real reason, though was buried between the lines: FedEx – like competitor UPS – is looking for some way to break out of the long term and extremely competitive business of providing enterprise logistics, and move into the higher margins of small business and independent contractors. Offload some of the retail risk to local franchisees, and go for the higher margins that smaller shippers will pay.

GoodBye to Kinkos

by Andrew McCaskey

The official end of Kinko's clocked in with the change to FedEx Office. The business press reported that the fondness than many have for the 24 hour copy center from their college days has, in recent years failed to translate into profit. They also report that FedEx overpaid for the roughly 700 retail locations.

The real reason, though was buried between the lines: FedEx - like competitor UPS - is looking for some way to break out of the long term and extremely competitive business of providing enterprise logistics, and move into the higher margins of small business and independent contractors. Offload some of the retail risk to local franchisees, and go for the higher margins that smaller shippers will pay.

The other side ? I value my almost daily trips to the UPS store - since many days, other than spouse and neighbors it's my only business contact. That's got to be worth something.

Pukka Problems

by Andrew McCaskey

I rely upon Pukka to do the posting of show note links for each episode – but there is something on the blink that is not permitting Pukka and Del.icio.us to do their thing for this episode.

I’ll try to add manual links tomorrow to the items we covered in the podcast.

Good news is that I have finally upgraded WordPress to 2.5.1 which should improve some of the capabilities and with some work improve the appearance of the site overall.

Here’s the 31 Days of the Dragon info for ACTIVE contests today..

Pukka Problems

by Andrew McCaskey

I rely upon Pukka to do the posting of show note links for each episode - but there is something on the blink that is not permitting Pukka and Del.icio.us to do their thing for this episode.

I'll try to add manual links tomorrow to the items we covered in the podcast.

Good news is that I have finally upgraded WordPress to 2.5.1 which should improve some of the capabilities and with some work improve the appearance of the site overall.

Here's the 31 Days of the Dragon (http://31daysofthedragon.com) info for ACTIVE contests today..

07 May - 14 May www.bostonpocketpc.com (http://www.bostonpocketpc.com) and www.techronical.com
08 May - 15 May www.the-gadgeteer.com (http://www.the-gadgeteer.com)
09 May - 16 May www.thedigitallifestyle.com (http://www.thedigitallifestyle.com)
10 May - 17 May www.digitalhomethoughts.com (http://www.digitalhomethoughts.com)
11 May - 18 May www.windows-now.com (http://www.windows-now.com)
12 May - 19 May www.windowsconnected.com (http://www.windowsconnected.com)
13 May - 20 May www.geekstogo.com (http://www.geekstogo.com)

Each site will have their own rules - and the SDR News version of the award contest will begin on May 19th.

Power Grid Basics

by Andrew McCaskey
The RSA conference item of most significance looks to be the one on the hacking of the SCADA network that monitors and controls the US power grid.

Originally a separate and dedicated system – the basic compromise of adding LAN cards to systems and informal net access provided the opening – along with some basic social engineering that assured that malware could and would be loaded on machines for access at a later time.

There was a lot of interest in botnets, spam, and phishing sorts of scams – but that looks pretty tame in comparison to the SCADA hack.

Maybe that is the wakeup call for the rest of us.

The bad guys already knew that.
