Starting up Coverage at HP Tech Forum Expo

by Andrew McCaskey
HP Technology Forum Coverage Starts Monday PM

I enjoyed a good flight to Las Vegas – direct on Allegiant Airlines – which flies from smaller markets only to vacation stops, in our case only to Las Vegas and Orlando. Usually I have not been able to catch them at the right time, since they fly only a few days a week – but this time the stars aligned. A little bit different, paying for extra bag, paying to board early, paying for assigned seat – but with the equipment that I had to put into the overhead, it was worth the extra money. With this trip there was no time to ship things in ahead of time.

The bad news is that I have a firewire drive that will not start up – not sure if it is the drive itself or if it is the power supply but in any event there will be no video done tonight on this machine. Early morning trip to a Best Buy, Staples or similar store is in the works, as the MacBook just has to have a firewire drive external for scratch space while any video is to be produced. My intent was to have some backchannel video at least in small snippets but looks like not in the cards. Looks like a quick trip to Fry’s in the morning.

The hotel LAN connection is also not working – can’t grab an IP address through the Airport Express – so for the moment making do with EVDO. We will get this sorted out tomorrow morning.

These are normal startup problems, and when we get linked up with the HP folks tomorrow at noon we will have a lot better situation. We’ve been promised a dedicated pipe, bandwidth, primary power and a front row seat for the keynote at 4:00PM Pacific, as long as we don’t dawdle.

Real Threat to eMail is not Spam

by Andrew McCaskey
The Real Threat to eMail is Not Spam

It’s the wonderful word coined at a WordCamp in 2007, bacn : It’s better than spam, but .. not that good. Wikipedia defines it as “messages which have been subscribed to and are therefore not unsolicited but are often unread by the recipient for a long period of time, if at all. Bacn has been described as “email you want but not right now” .

Newsletter digests, twitter followers – press releases and updates flow into my inbox in a continuous stream – and if can keep ahead of them with rules I can keep them out of sight. With the new Microsoft study that proclaims 97% of email traffic to be spam, the legitimate traffic has to be shoehorned in within that 3% along with the bacn.

It’s not a new problem – I’ve seen it rampant in corporate email for at least ten years. At first, it was due to the ignoramus “reply to all” , followed shortly by the friend mailing list of jokes, stories and political commentary, then by the CYA “copy stakeholders” practice. With combinations of all of the above, those systems had reached gridlock years ago. Only now it’s moved to another level on personal email as well.

This turn of events came about because we granted permission – and much like privacy that slips away as we gain one more marketing advantage, coupon or registration bacn comes our way. Just like the old Pogo cartoon: “We have seen the enemy and he is us”

Real Threat to eMail is not Spam

by Andrew McCaskey
The Real Threat to eMail is Not Spam

It's the wonderful word coined at a WordCamp in 2007, bacn : It's better than spam, but .. not that good. Wikipedia defines it as "messages which have been subscribed to and are therefore not unsolicited but are often unread by the recipient for a long period of time, if at all. Bacn has been described as "email you want but not right now" .

Newsletter digests, twitter followers - press releases and updates flow into my inbox in a continuous stream - and if can keep ahead of them with rules I can keep them out of sight. With the new Microsoft study that proclaims 97% of email traffic to be spam, the legitimate traffic has to be shoehorned in within that 3% along with the bacn.

It's not a new problem - I've seen it rampant in corporate email for at least ten years. At first, it was due to the ignoramus "reply to all" , followed shortly by the friend mailing list of jokes, stories and political commentary, then by the CYA "copy stakeholders" practice. With combinations of all of the above, those systems had reached gridlock years ago. Only now it's moved to another level on personal email as well.

This turn of events came about because we granted permission - and much like privacy that slips away as we gain one more marketing advantage, coupon or registration bacn comes our way. Just like the old Pogo cartoon: "We have seen the enemy and he is us"

YouTube Economics

by Andrew McCaskey
Thursday, 09 April 2009 21:59

You Can’t Make it Up Through Volume

Disturbing news from the Silicon Valley Insider – a Credit Suisse report shows that YouTube is losing close to $420Million a year – and even deep pockets are not unlimited. They ascribe most of the problem to user generated content, that seems to become lower in quality the deeper into the catalog that you go. And there seems to be no clear business model that will allow Google to pull near term revenues in significant amounts, while the direct expenses of increased volume only grow each day.

Living through a transition is both interesting and a bit scary. We are grappling with the most exciting technology and societal transformation but are also in a time where just because you can do something is not necessarily the reason to do something. As YouTube has proven, you can create an incredible distribution engine – estimated at around 85 Billion video streams per year but yet still not quite make a connection to the revenue that is needed to make it a profitable venture.

As the Insider pointed out, Google has already passed the production learning curve and economies of scale. There’s nothing to look forward to in materialy reducing costs on one side of the ledger. The next 18 months will see if there’s a model that can improve performance on the other side.

It may be that Boxee, Apple TV, various Media Manager products finally get their distribution, indexing and User Interface issues resolved, turn things up, and find that their most famous actor has decided to retire early.

Open Source Evil

by Andrew McCaskey
The Real Cornficker

It’s not about training, but that’s the real by-product. I suspect that the Cornficker worm – primed and ready to go off April 1st has been put together for blackmail or economic reasons. The educational factors are the unintended consequence that are probably more so than the present variant that’s supposedly to explode in less than ten days.

The worm started as a mundane example – targeted at the systems with ignorant or lazy owners, with an attack vector that had already been closed by the sysops that were on the ball. Version B was the step to the big leagues, adding peer-to-peer functionality, disabling firewall protection, and running a variable command and control system from a list of domains.

Version C of Conficker amp’ed it up and extended peer to peer, with digital code-signing, so it only accepts trusted code updates from itself. That means security experts can’t simply inject code to neutralize it.

The big danger April 1st is not what happens – it is the fact that malware authors are watching and learning.. It’s been termed evil open source.

I don’t think that’s the primary motivation – there is too much into this thing for an inverted altruism to be in play. Just follow the money, and see what’s for hire April 2nd.

Even MacBooks Get the Blues

by Andrew McCaskey
Even MacBooks Get the Blues

The Zero-day exploit directed against the Safari Browser/MacBook Pro should be a good reminder that, as the oldest of the IT folks remind us -that there are reasons for data backup and disaster recovery that don’t go out of style. There are always enough bad guys for mischief or malice for hire to make life miserable for others.

Mac owners have some reason to be smug (although not as much reason as the marketing folks at Apple would have us believe) as far as vulnerabilities and malware susceptability are concerned. But ,as this exploit shows it’s not a 100% guarantee. With the growth in the Mac (until the recession struck) OSX boxes will become a more lucrative target. Only the more affluent consumers will be able to replace machines or afford the Apple products and they represent more attractive targets in the coming months.

Just like the famous bank robber Willie Sutton when asked “Why do you keep robbing banks ? said “That’s where the money is” .That’s why there are going to be more Mac malware attacks.

More Than a Recession

by Andrew McCaskey
Tom Peters Says Not

In his blog entry (which hit the twitterstream a few days ago) guru Tom Peters made a thought provoking assertion: This is not a recession, it is a recalibration.

He distills the change in this way: It’s all different now: how a business generates results, how customers think, what they care about, or who they are. They may actually be different people.

I’m trying to take stock on the content and format of the podcast: Looking at re-calibration among the three topic areas that we address at SDRNews – technology, business and regulatory policy.

Let’s take stock on one: The technology, broadly defined as both enabler of and/or end product or service is, in the short term, continuing on the same trajectory as a year ago.

The time scale is elongated, but the needs for processing power, storage, bandwidth and mobility have, in many situations, increased- not decreased.

Customers act differently because their confidence has been shaken. The business climate thrives on predictability and that’s one attribute that is in very, very short supply.

The individual news items on technology and regulatory policy that get presented each day are striving to find some solid foundation and stability so that some degree of expectations can be set. And, to be honest the sources Slashdot, Digg and Reddit are becoming less productive and filled with even more filler Top Ten lists and pop culture.

It looks like the samples from the news stream are searching for some foundational points of predictiabiltiy, and coming up lacking.

It’s all about figuring what levers to pull, And hoping that they are still connected to something.

It's all about figuring what levers to pull, And hoping that they are still connected to something.

Laptops Set to Rule

by Andrew McCaskey
Ars Technica summarized some of the factors that are pushing tower machines ever closer to obsolescence.

Our mostly geek friendly family is probably further along than most in the laptop adoption, driven mostly by those in their twenties and thirties, rather than those of us who are a generation older.

On the other hand, our recent extended stay in VA did feature a total of four permanent laptops and a couple more floating in and out of the house. The first order of business after the Comcast installation was the wifi hotspot so that we could freely roam about the house and yard.

The biggest limitation is screen size- even though I produce the show nightly on the laptop, it is a real combination of eyestrain and wrist burn that drives me to a separate display. The separate keyboard is not far away in the plans.

Heading Back

by Andrew McCaskey
We are packing out for the trip back to the Midwest after six weeks more or less camped out at relatives in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia.

Even this rural area has some surprises. Most notable of which was the growth in wideband availabilty over the past six months. While there were generally all sorts of adventures required to find wifi connections – particularly late at night after the coffee shops had shut down and businesses were closed, this trip things have changed.

First of all, the local cable company (was Adelphia, now Comcast) finally put in real two way broadband, replacing the overpriced RF down, telco line up that had been offered for years. New hardware and few subscribers mean’t lightning speeds for most of the time here.

The most amazing part was Sprint EVDO – which just arrived. Still limited to areas in the proximity of the interstate, it’s still killer when it works.

Good family times and good connectivity so that work can continue has been a good combination. Not much of a vacation, but a good change of pace. Plus, two great podcamps (even though expensive trips to Ohio and Boston) to keep in the swing of things, plus the New Media Expo coming up in just a few weeks.

While there were generally all sorts of adventures required to find wifi connections - particularly late at night after the coffee shops had shut down and businesses were closed, this trip things have changed.

First of all, the local cable company (was Adelphia, now Comcast) finally put in real two way broadband, replacing the overpriced RF down, telco line up that had been offered for years. New hardware and few subscribers mean't lightning speeds for most of the time here.

The most amazing part was Sprint EVDO - which just arrived. Still limited to areas in the proximity of the interstate, it's still killer when it works.

Good family times and good connectivity so that work can continue has been a good combination. Not much of a vacation, but a good change of pace. Plus, two great podcamps (even though expensive trips to Ohio and Boston) to keep in the swing of things, plus the New Media Expo coming up in just a few weeks.

A Word of Thanks to RawVoice

by Andrew McCaskey

Today marks the beginning of a new campaign for our sponsor GoToMeeting from Citrix. The addition of native OSX support and VoIP in the conferencing service will result in a great deal of improvement in enterprise and creative networks.

GoToMeeting has the main supporter of the podcast for almost the entire time that I have been affiliated with the TechPodcast Network.

I’ve been proud to be associated with TechPodcasts and RawVoice since early 2005 as one of the original TPN founders.

The original Techpodcast Network merged with RawVoice in 2007, and is a part of the RawVoice group of Blubrry, TPN, and Podcaster News.

As an independent podcaster, it is almost essential that you affiliate with other podcasters and take advantage of the power of consolidation from a media standpoint. No matter how large an audience a prospective podcaster brings to the marketplace, it will never come close to the audience that is presented to a potential advertiser by an aggregator.

I have been able to grow in the general field of New Media with the support of GoToMeeting. That would have never happened without the help and support of the Techpodcasts Network, and the commercial assistance of RawVoice.

Congrats to Citrix / GoToMeeting on the successful release of a major upgrade for GoToMeeting sites around the world.
