    Road Train Concepts

    The EU is planning a study on Road Trains

    It’s basically a big semi trailer with a “professional driver” , and a series of automobiles drafting danger close behind in a line. Wireless sensors and radar link these autos maintaining precise distances and synchronized speeds while Presumably those drivers are taking a nap or catching up on work online.

    It’s sort of a guidance “tractor beam” that, once you join allows the group of vehicles to travel on down the road all controlled by the lead driver. Because the vehicles are so closely spaced in the airflow, fuel savings of 20% are anticipated.
    The drivers can relax until they wish to leave the road train, at which point they signal their intention to the driver at the front, and they are free to accelerate out of the trainline to an adjacent lane, and the tractor beam signals the car behind you to take up the slack.

    The EU’s study will be entirely focused on the system working with wireless sensors and up to eight vehicles ranging from your everyday family cars to buses and trains. In theory, these vehicles could be mixed and matched in a ‘road train’

    Either way, test trials are set to begin in the UK, Spain and Sweden on tracks with public road trials beginning in Spain.

    Bet there are an entire generation of lawyers in school right now on this one.. a business opportunity for lawyers.

    The recent problems and the virtual collapse of the AT&T network from overload congestion with iPhone data traffic has received a lot of press. Now, some hope that the problem may not be as serious as thought: although someone will end up with some serious explaining to do. It appears that at last some of the problems may be due to misconfiguration of routers in the AT&T network.

    The problem is in the cross disciplinary nature of the beast. A telephone company has to employ radio in a data networking problem. In addition to the organizational challenges, there’s a cultural one as well. I’ve observed each of the three worlds up close (adding maybe a fourth one with broadcast engineers) and there is absolutely a total difference in vocabulary, approach, standards and expectations.

    The wireline engineers in control of some of the settings that put “maximum buffering” into the system – resulting in ping times up to eight seconds. What should have happened is much smaller buffers that would allow short term blockage to occur and then prompt temporary but automatic fallback in speed that would have removed the congestion. Add in radio effects of jitter with mobiles in motion, and it’s a wonder the system ever settles in as well as it does.

    Murdoch and Reuters

    Which Approach Will Win ?

    Rupert Murdoch has issued the ultimatum to Amazon: They are our customers, not yours – and we want their names. The ball is now in the Jeff Bezos court, and of all the decisions that he has made this year, it’s going to be one of the most important. If Bezos caves, and delivers up the Kindle subscriber list to the Wall Street Journal, the blogosphere is going to erupt in a way that will make the recent 1984 flap look tame. Not to mention the EFF and probably a half dozen other legal challenges. Amazon will surely survive, but the Kindle probably won’t.

    The more interesting contest is between the massive Newscorp, including Fox News and the decision to place everything behind a paywall, and the desire by the Associated Press to maintain their margins by doing the same. Reuters CEO has taken the high road:

    . . .Ahearn wrote a piece on a Reuters blog (Via SIA), calling for publishers, bloggers, aggregators, search engines and ad networks to get together and figure out something that works for everyone. “I believe in the link economy. Please feel free to link to our stories — it adds value to all producers of content. I believe you should play fair and encourage your readers to read-around to what others are producing if you use it and find it interesting.

    I don’t believe you could or should charge others for simply linking to your content. Appropriate excerpting and referencing are not only acceptable, but encouraged. ”

    Guess which one is going to win. Hint: It’s not the one that’s getting thinner every week.

    Daily Prophet – 2011

    Will it Save Newspapers ?

    The Harry Potter moving newspaper, the foldable “Daily Prophet” may well be in American hands within the next 18 months, courtesy of the UK firm Plastic Logic. If it gets here in time, it may save the newspaper.

    Objections by the EFF and others not withstanding, it appears that the Kindle has established itself as the method of choice (or the platform to beat) in the wireless electronic distribution of text content. The Kindle has stretched over the chasm between tech early adopters to the general early majority- at least among those who can afford the device and the books.

    If the Plastic Logic team targets a much lower price point, say $99 – the convenience factor of a rollable/foldable device might resurrect the fortunes of the Newspaper, freed from the expense of physical distribution, at last.

    But, it better be good and get here fast. {sharethis}

      iPhone 3.0 Software on Original Hardware

      First Gen Hardware ? Beware !

       Gearlog.com warns that “iPhone 3.0 software works well when pre-installed on the new 3G S. When users download and install it themselves on older versions of the handset, however, things are apparently taking a decidedly different turn.”

I have to admit that I’m seeing the same symptoms cited in the article on my original iPhone hardware. I did the 3.0 upgrade Monday, saw that most of my Apps had disappeared but was able to at least call them through  the new Spotlight screen. I thought it was just my lack of understanding and wanted to take time later in the week to go back and grab some of the web tutorials I have bookmarked, learn how to cut and paste, and run the new system. 

Along the way, I noticed that around the house and around town the battery did seem to be losing a charge.Not traveling, so no problem to put on the charger. And it looks like a rollback to 2.2 might be in order – or keeping the charger handy.
      Gearlog.com suggests that hopefully we’ll be seeing a 3.1 version of the software soon that addresses most or all of these problems.

Beware !  Gearlog.com warns that "iPhone 3.0 software works well when pre-installed on the new 3G S. When users download and install it themselves on older versions of the handset, however, things are apparently taking a decidedly different turn."

I have to admit that I'm seeing the same symptoms cited in the article on my original iPhone hardware. I did the 3.0 upgrade Monday, saw that most of my Apps had disappeared but was able to at least call them through  the new Spotlight screen. I thought it was just my lack of understanding and wanted to take time later in the week to go back and grab some of the web tutorials I have bookmarked, learn how to cut and paste, and run the new system. 

Along the way, I noticed that around the house and around town the battery did seem to be losing a charge.Not traveling, so no problem to put on the charger. And it looks like a rollback to 2.2 might be in order - or keeping the charger handy. Gearlog.com suggests that hopefully we'll be seeing a 3.1 version of the software soon that addresses most or all of these problems.         CBS on uStream: Not a Recovery

        The dalliance with Joost appears to have cost CBS dearly. As the only one of the four TV networks that is not participating in Hulu, CBS is making a run to partner with uStream.tv, providing some behind the scenes news coverage, some on site special events and things like Presidential speeches and the Katie Couric Evening News.

        The tactical mistake was assuming that there was still a place for a proprietary viewer. They did every thing right, with timed release, beta testers, artificial scarcity, social networking to build a viewer base. The only problem was content and delivery quality. Other than than the system was in the Lame category, tending towards Fail.

        It’s going to be painful. Even the most traditional of homes with any geek presence at all are going to blow right past this. Our approach, for example, is to buffer up the NBC evening news and after dinner take maybe 12 minutes out of the day to fast forward through to see if there is any additional footage from stories we may have read on CNN or Google News from the desk at work during the day.

        I doubt that I am going to want to have to watch anything that was mentioned int he press release realtime. I’ll just catch the John Stewart summary on HuLu or the video clip from the CNN Website.{sharethis}

          Will It Go to Eleven ?

          First, let me thank you for your efforts in the ongoing production of SDRNews. As a long-time listener (back when you used to include music) and really enjoy listening to your podcast.

          I have noticed lately, however, that the audio level of the recording is a bit low. I can understand that being the case with your travel studio as that probably requires less-than-ideal conditions, but with your home studio, I often have to turn up my stereo or headphones which results in me having to quickly turn them back down when I switch to a different podcast (often Todd’s GNC) or song.

          If there are technical (or personal) reasons for producing it as you do, please don’t worry, it isn’t a big deal. I just wanted to make sure you got the feedback in case you were unaware.

          Here’s the reply:

          Thanks for the report. I am producing now on ProTools LE using their bridge meter and trying to peak at -6dbm RMS. On the road I do not have a hardware compressor, where I do have that in the audio chain in the home studio. There are also different microphones involved that may change the sound levels. Conversely the recorder that I have been using on the road actually is running pretty close to flat-topping or clipping, while the studio is well within the linear range.

          Let me change the target to -3dbm and hit the compressor a bit harder, and see if that helps the next few days.

            Big Kindle ? Big Mistake

            The most powerful argument for e-paper devices is mobility – and other than the ability to differentiate from some other portable readers, if the Kindle II is much larger, it is going to move quickly into the negative utility space. The last thing that a public transport rider needs is some sort of hard cased 11×17 inch or larger display to carry under the arm or try to wedge into a backpack.

            The present size Kindle seems just about right, for most content – tradeoff between readability and stowability. Until the systems arrive that enable scroll-like flexible displays that can fold and pull out to full size – like a tabloid sized Newspaper and then be stowed back like a fold-up map- I am afraid that it’s going to be a showpiece. Meaning, a piece made mostly for show. ShareThis

              Getting Over the Seattle Post Intelligencer

              Stronger Than Ever – After the Reset

              The announcement that the Seattle Post-Intelligencer will cease publication on paper is being lamented far and wide. I suspect that we will get over it, quickly. The “paper” will continue to publish, online. And, let us hope there will be some archival hard copies burned off for the King Country Courthouse records each day. The real paper will outlive the need for publishing on cellulose.

              As much as we like to lament the passing of newspapers throughout the country, Clay Christensen’s Innovator’s Dilemma again offers an explaination, of sorts. The disruptive technology (blogs ,user generated content and internet based delivery in this case) initially delivers an inferior product. The established technology offers a few enhancements which do little but increase their costs, and the upstart begins to encroach with more and more application.

              Newspapers or journalists / journalism is needed as much or more in the coming years than in the past. In fact, finding a voice and finding an audience will perhaps become easier in the new delivery system than in the old.

              What we are lamenting is the passing of a business model, and fearing what comes next. After all the advertiser supported one has worked for a few hundred years and we are awfully comfortable with it. Besides, the home of the Kindle is just on the other side of the I-5 Freeway.

I suspect that we will get over it, quickly. The "paper" will continue to publish, online. And, let us hope there will be some archival hard copies burned off for the King Country Courthouse records each day. The real paper will outlive the need for publishing on cellulose. As much as we like to lament the passing of newspapers throughout the country, Clay Christensen's Innovator's Dilemma again offers an explaination, of sorts. The disruptive technology (blogs ,user generated content and internet based delivery in this case) initially delivers an inferior product. The established technology offers a few enhancements which do little but increase their costs, and the upstart begins to encroach with more and more application. Newspapers or journalists / journalism is needed as much or more in the coming years than in the past. In fact, finding a voice and finding an audience will perhaps become easier in the new delivery system than in the old. What we are lamenting is the passing of a business model, and fearing what comes next. After all the advertiser supported one has worked for a few hundred years and we are awfully comfortable with it. Besides, the home of the Kindle is just on the other side of the I-5 Freeway.                 Kicked Into the Future

                Newspapers and the Kindle

                The Twitter stream @themediaisdying documents the day to day demise of the newspaper as we have known in for the past two hundred years. The Rocky Mountain News, the Seattle PI, the Chicago Tribune and scores of lesser known names are circling the deadpool on a business model that no longer works. Imagine my surprise to read that like the burning suspension bridge behind Indiana Jones, there may be a technology bridge to the opposite cliff.

                The Silicon Valley Insider did an analysis of the publishing costs of the New York Times, based upon public statements on subscriber levels and costs. Their conclusion was that the New York Times could BUY a Amazon Kindle for each subscriber, give it to the subscriber and save money, compared with the physical print and distribution of the printed paper version of the product. In fact, the calculations indicated that the New York Times costs would be cut in half ! There have been rumors that the Hearst organization is considering a portable reader of it’s own.

                The CES Show had a number of Kindle knock-offs at the $200 price point. It may be the future of ePaper is coming at us faster than we think – from an unexpected source.
