The Future is Here
The full quoteis “The future is here, it’s just unevenly distributed” And there is probably no time when the assumptions have been so wrong concerning who and where the future is most likely to reside and resonate. This future is lumpy in demographics and geography.
The problem, as in so many aspects are the Baby Boomers – who are not going quietly. More than a few of us have totally plunged into the digital and connected age, feeling more like natives than those whose age and bloodline gives them natural citizenship. Likewise, there are some Gen-X and even Gen-Y Millenials that are not buying into the full digital future that is supposedly as natural to them as breathing.
Normalized for education and geographic proximity to good connectivity, the Boomer generation is probably more average than we would like to think. But the size of the cohort is so large that those with advantage – aside from providing Apple shareholders with as close to an annuity as possible in the volitile market for consumer electronics – are going to continue to be deeply involved as long as possible. Most of us aren’t much good at graceful retirement to golf and cruises. And besides, the conversion of 401K’s into 201K’s have put most of us into the workforce for a long, long time.
