Video Extension for Joomla

The main presentation at the Joomla Chicago User Group included a review of Video extensions for Joomla by John Coonen, and an in-depth review by Joe Scarry of Arc Technology Group of the Joomla extensions that were applied for a commercial client, JellyTelly. JellyTelly is a commercial producer of family videos, made famous by the VeggieTales series that have been incredibly popular among families around the world for the past fifteen years – first on VHS and later on DVD.

Arc Technology Group worked with them in a total revamp of their production and distribution process, and the resultant management system, built as Joomla extensions allows for a far deeper user experience than ever before. After wowing the audience for 25 minutes, Joe dropped the bomb: The component will be released in the near future – for general use – as a “video content manager for Joomla” component. We can expect it to be released under appropriate open source license by the end of 2009.

If you have video management requirements on your Joomla site, this component will provide the content management that you need.

    Joomla Core Team Loses Two

    Abillo Captures a Pair

    The Open Source Start-up Abillo has captured two of the key members of the Joomla Project. Abillo is a new open source project, and Wilco Jansen and Anthony Ferrara’s resignation from the Joomla! Core team last week caught a lot of the Content Management System (CMS) world by surprise. Joomla users and developers are to be assured that continuity of the Joomla project has been a priority, given the changes.

    Abillo is emphatically not a fork of Joomla – but a “completely new codebase, community and services set” according to Wilco Jansen, the CEO of Abillo, Inc.

    The Abillo Software Stack, named The Abillo Experience, is currently under steady development and more details about the project vision, goals and solutions will be revealed in later stages.

      Not Evenly Distributed

      The Future is Here

      The full quoteis “The future is here, it’s just unevenly distributed” And there is probably no time when the assumptions have been so wrong concerning who and where the future is most likely to reside and resonate. This future is lumpy in demographics and geography.

      The problem, as in so many aspects are the Baby Boomers – who are not going quietly. More than a few of us have totally plunged into the digital and connected age, feeling more like natives than those whose age and bloodline gives them natural citizenship. Likewise, there are some Gen-X and even Gen-Y Millenials that are not buying into the full digital future that is supposedly as natural to them as breathing.

      Normalized for education and geographic proximity to good connectivity, the Boomer generation is probably more average than we would like to think. But the size of the cohort is so large that those with advantage – aside from providing Apple shareholders with as close to an annuity as possible in the volitile market for consumer electronics – are going to continue to be deeply involved as long as possible. Most of us aren’t much good at graceful retirement to golf and cruises. And besides, the conversion of 401K’s into 201K’s have put most of us into the workforce for a long, long time.         Analog TV is Over: Deal With It

        I Thought We Did This Once

        Deja Vu – All over again we get to have the special hotlines, the Pubic Announcements and operators standing by. With the demise of H1N1 and the renewed promise of slow news days, we are once again going to spend time and treasure on making sure that the last 1% of the population gets their over the air television story straight. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration has cleared out list entries for 4.2 million people waiting for converter box discount coupons that it accumulated in January after running out of cash (the American Reconstruction and Recovery Act has replenished its coffers to the tune of $650 million).

        Ars Technica notes that 4000 operators will be standing by at 1-888-CALL-FCC to provide online assistance through three eight-hour shifts. Add to that the ground troups: 400 “walk-in centers” and 12,000 DTV help clinics to show people how to set up those converter boxes.

        I sure hope that we get the problem solved. What with Health Care, two wars, an economic meltdown and other serious subjects coming up on the report card, the equivalent of an A in Health Class might be the only good mark.

Their plans are for the initial program episodes to focus on the baseline planning for a site using Joomla – organizing content and goals for both business and non-profit organizations. From there, the program content can branch in various directions.

            Coverage of CMSExpo was a really big event for the SDRNews onsite team – and a big step forward for the CMS community as well. – As we count things up, we have 42 formal interviews, around 15 product booth videos, and backchannel video of the event.

            CMS Expo has grown from a Joomla event into an Open Source conference. Joomla, Drupal, Alfresco, and Plone were all in play.

            It will probably take a full two weeks to process that material and get it posted properly – keep following Twitter axmc for alerts to new content.

              Kara Karsten is a software engineer and project manager who is looking at Joomla for the very first time. She is very experienced both as a coder and manager in large and small organizations – but is looking for a change from large multi-year corporate projects.

              Brian Yunkhe is a Media Specialist at the University of Denver – a long time pro in audio and video but with current web design skills.

              It is going to be an interesting mix of people, technology and opportunity.

                We Will See if It Rules

                What’s the balance between content value and production values ? What’s the balance between general tech, regulatory, and business news and specialized deep dive content ? We are about to find out. Starting this week, SDRNews is rolling the dice on a major expansion to live coverage of specialized content at the Content Management Association CMSExpo in Denver, CO. John Coonen is the Executive Director of CMSA, and founder of the Expo.

                We have picked either the absolute best or the absolute worst time to invest in this venture. We are adding Associate Producers with different styles, on air personality and perspectives for the event. Why make the leap, and why now ?

                From a podcaster standpoint, as with any media business, it is a struggle to keep things fresh. Sometimes it is small changes or tweaks, and other times – it is a time for change. The CMS Expo is a small show – but it fills a specific need at a time when web content developers are looking for unique services for clients, and when companies are looking for ways to reduce their costs and increase their effectiveness.

                I am enough of a geek that I am really anxious to see how the combination of Twitter, Seesmic, webcams, Camtwist and other consumer grade tools can address content collection in a conference setting.

                But – the real test will be on how the audience reacts to this trial. IF it meets your needs or interests, tell us so – and tell your friends. If we are moving off base – let me know that as well.

What's the balance between general tech, regulatory, and business news and specialized deep dive content ? We are about to find out. Starting this week, SDRNews is rolling the dice on a major expansion to live coverage of specialized content at the Content Management Association CMSExpo in Denver, CO. John Coonen is the Executive Director of CMSA, and founder of the Expo. We have picked either the absolute best or the absolute worst time to invest in this venture. We are adding Associate Producers with different styles, on air personality and perspectives for the event. Why make the leap, and why now ? From a podcaster standpoint, as with any media business, it is a struggle to keep things fresh. Sometimes it is small changes or tweaks, and other times - it is a time for change. The CMS Expo is a small show - but it fills a specific need at a time when web content developers are looking for unique services for clients, and when companies are looking for ways to reduce their costs and increase their effectiveness. I am enough of a geek that I am really anxious to see how the combination of Twitter, Seesmic, webcams, Camtwist and other consumer grade tools can address content collection in a conference setting.
