Social Media and Holiday Shopping

by Andrew McCaskey
No Surprise Here

The latest comScore report shows that online spending is up over 3% from 2008 for the period from Black Friday through Cyber Monday through the first week of December. And, a lot of that increase is attributed to Social Media.

If there is any surprise, it’s that it is so small an increase. And it can only be expected to increase in the weeks to come . The reason ? The changing demographics of Facebook.

The fastest growing segment of Facebook is the over thirty-five population. And I would expect that the fastest growing group within that is the rapidly approaching retirement Baby Boomers who not only have the disposable income, but have spent the past year getting newly acquainted with friends and distant family members on Facebook. It’s far more engaging than email, and, once you hide the Mafia Wars, Vampire Games, Farmville and similar annoyances you find that it’s worthwhile to follow a few of your favorite vendor fan pages.

Tie in a little bad weather to make the trip to the mall a bit more trouble, and the grandkids – who’s new photos just arrived are in an even better position than they would have been in years gone by. The only surprise is that it’s only a 3% growth.

We Have . . A Winner

by Andrew McCaskey
Slow Internet meets its Waterloo

Waterloo, Iowa isn’t a name that conjures up visions of “blazing-fast Internet,” but it’s about to get the fastest residential connections in the country: 105Mbps. Waterloo is no high-tech haven; more typical are the surrounding farms, the John Deere plant, and a massive Target distribution center. Cable operator Mediacom is changing that perception, though, installing DOCSIS 3.0 gear that will boost the top-tier 20Mbps speeds in town up to 105Mbps, the highest speed in the country.

Due to cable’s shared architecture, residents will rarely if ever see a full 105Mbps on their home connections. . If a modern cable plant has been properly installed, there is enough bandwidth that DOCSIS 3.0 upgrades require only headend upgrades and new modems, not extensive trenching and street-level work. The telcos, which depended on low-bandwidth copper wire for so many decades, now face a choice. To get more bandwidth, they can run fiber to the home (Verizon), fiber to the node (AT&T), or deploy new phone lines and rely on channel bonding. None is as simple or cheap as cable’s upgrade path.

Unless Verizon is willing to aggressively push the deployment of FIOS service, it is going to be very hard for them to overcome the lead that DOCSIS 3.0 provides. And very hard to plow that back into the rate base and get it past various state regulatory authorities.

On the other hand, it may be justice for 40 year amortization schedules of copper paid for 37 years ago that have enabled telcos to stay behind the times in comfort.

We Have . . A Winner

by Andrew McCaskey
Slow Internet meets its Waterloo

Waterloo, Iowa isn't a name that conjures up visions of "blazing-fast Internet," but it's about to get the fastest residential connections in the country: 105Mbps.

Due to cable's shared architecture, residents will rarely if ever see a full 105Mbps on their home connections. None is as simple or cheap as cable's upgrade path.

Connectify a Roundtable Hit

by Andrew McCaskey
RoundtableDemo

As I mentioned last week, Connectify.me is a new service that is going to turn into a game changer. And it offers real value and is going to sell more Windows 7 laptops to business users than any ad campaign.

We had Alex Giziz, CEO on our TPN Roundtable, and got some more insight into the free download for Windows7 that creates a wifi hotspot from a net connection. In his demo, he was able to create the site and link his iPod Touch into the laptop within a few seconds. The hotspot is secured by passphrase, and even if an intruder is able to guess the phrase or has left the group, the host is able to observe the real time participants on his machine.

If you are a mobile worker, you really can’t live without connectivity. Connectify is going to be an essential part of mobile professional’s toolkits for years to come.

Speaking Radio, Data and Telephone

by Andrew McCaskey
Speaking Radio and Telephone

The recent problems and the virtual collapse of the AT&T network from overload congestion with iPhone data traffic has received a lot of press. Now, some hope that the problem may not be as serious as thought: although someone will end up with some serious explaining to do. It appears that at last some of the problems may be due to misconfiguration of routers in the AT&T network.

The problem is in the cross disciplinary nature of the beast. A telephone company has to employ radio in a data networking problem. In addition to the organizational challenges, there’s a cultural one as well. I’ve observed each of the three worlds up close (adding maybe a fourth one with broadcast engineers) and there is absolutely a total difference in vocabulary, approach, standards and expectations.

The wireline engineers in control of some of the settings that put “maximum buffering” into the system – resulting in ping times up to eight seconds. What should have happened is much smaller buffers that would allow short term blockage to occur and then prompt temporary but automatic fallback in speed that would have removed the congestion. Add in radio effects of jitter with mobiles in motion, and it’s a wonder the system ever settles in as well as it does.

In addition to the organizational challenges, there's a cultural one as well. I've observed each of the three worlds up close (adding maybe a fourth one with broadcast engineers) and there is absolutely a total difference in vocabulary, approach, standards and expectations.

The wireline engineers in control of some of the settings that put "maximum buffering" into the system - resulting in ping times up to eight seconds. What should have happened is much smaller buffers that would allow short term blockage to occur and then prompt temporary but automatic fallback in speed that would have removed the congestion. Add in radio effects of jitter with mobiles in motion, and it's a wonder the system ever settles in as well as it does.

Multi-Tasking and the Brain

by Andrew McCaskey
As We Suspected

Does our modern interrupt driven way of living and business have a permanent re-wiring effect on the brain ? The report from the Stanford study is in some ways not a surprise at all. Just like we wanted to believe a number of things on the economic front, what goes up must come down, and when you are not paying attention, things get messed up.

That’s the conclusion of the study on a number of undergraduate participants – who were asked to complete standard psychological tests and self report on the ir wired working habits. Those who were “highly skilled” at handling interrupts were most at risk in their performance on the testing suite.

I’ve certainly observed the problem – struggling with Attention Deficit Disorder – and congratulating myself on the ability to keep a number of projects going, and keep an eye and ear peeled for new opportunities. Plus – the inability to watch movies more than 25 or 30 years old. Prior to that, and there’s a snoozer in the making. Perhaps the stream of news needs to be even more closely monitored to make sure that excessive multitasking is not killing productivity that we think is being enhanced.

A Rotten Idea – GPS Auto Tracking

by Andrew McCaskey
GPS Tracking for Gasoline Tax

The Kansas City Star reports that there are trials underway at the University of Iowa involving GPS tracking for tax enforcement. With a target date of 2020, they will need those 11 years of lead time to handle the first round of lawsuits.

The notion is that as fuel efficiency increases, revenues from the gasoline tax go down. The tech solution is to place GPS trackers on every vehicle and then read them remotely and send a bill each month based on the exact miles driven. A Rotten Idea - GPS Auto Tracking

by Andrew McCaskey
GPS Tracking for Gasoline Tax

The Kansas City Star reports that there are trials underway at the University of Iowa involving GPS tracking for tax enforcement. With a target date of 2020, they will need those 11 years of lead time to handle the first round of lawsuits.

The notion is that as fuel efficiency increases, revenues from the gasoline tax go down. The tech solution is to place GPS trackers on every vehicle and then read them remotely and send a bill each month based on the exact miles driven. This would, supposedly replace the 18 cents per gallon gas tax with a mileage tax of 1 or 2 cents per mile driven.

There seem to be an increasing number of things that get investigated without thinking - and this is a prime candidate. Just because you can doesn't mean that you should.

Or maybe you'd be willing to sell your right to privacy of movement for half a penny a mile ? If your auto gets a bit better than 20 mpg and the gas tax is roughly 18 cents, you'd "save" 16 cents and be able to drive around 32 miles on the difference.

This sounds like a non-starter. And the EFF and ACLU have not even begun to sharpen up their knives. As well they should.{sharethis}

Joomla Core Team Loses Two

by Andrew McCaskey
Abillo Captures a Pair

The Open Source Start-up Abillo has captured two of the key members of the Joomla Project. Abillo is a new open source project, and Wilco Jansen and Anthony Ferrara’s resignation from the Joomla! Core team last week caught a lot of the Content Management System (CMS) world by surprise. Joomla users and developers are to be assured that continuity of the Joomla project has been a priority, given the changes.

Abillo is emphatically not a fork of Joomla – but a “completely new codebase, community and services set” according to Wilco Jansen, the CEO of Abillo, Inc.

The Abillo Software Stack, named The Abillo Experience, is currently under steady development and more details about the project vision, goals and solutions will be revealed in later stages.

Twittering Celebs and Decline

by Andrew McCaskey
The Real Story Behind Cable News Twittering PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andrew McCaskey

It’s Not Just Trendy

It’s cheap – and it’s going to increase. User contributed content has got to be the greatest enhancement to programming cost reduction to come along for a number of years. As noted at Fanboy.com, the nose of the camel entered the tent roughly 45 years ago, as news of the Kennedy Assassination reached most Americans by television or radio, rather than newspaper. That began the slow decline that is only now working its way towards a logical end game.

The same eventual fate awaits network and cable news, evne though it may take another twenty years. The celebrity twitterings of Larry King and Oprah are the symptoms of that decline.

The first indicators began to appear with the introduction of TIVO, which for the first time let viewers recognize that they could allocate less than fifteen minutes of content time for the evening “News” and often were able to zip thorugh the pop culture/celebrity components and trim the news content to around ten minutes of the nominal “half hour”.

The contest between Larry King and Ashton Kucher was a celebrity death match -a fun publicity stunt. But with Don Lemon and other CNN personalities making Twitter and Facebook a major component of their on air persona their tweets become one more reason to not watch – and to recognize that the TIVO treatment of their on-air presence is headed rapidly towards content free territory.

User Generated content is not only trendy, it’s cheap. And as much as we love the cute pet tricks and storm footage on i-Report it’s a current bottom line improvement that is going to sow the seeds for a meager harvest in just a few years.

It's cheap - and it's going to increase.

The first indicators began to appear with the introduction of TIVO, which for the first time let viewers recognize that they could allocate less than fifteen minutes of content time for the evening "News" and often were able to zip thorugh the pop culture/celebrity components and trim the news content to around ten minutes of the nominal "half hour".

The contest between Larry King and Ashton Kucher was a celebrity death match -a fun publicity stunt. But with Don Lemon and other CNN personalities making Twitter and Facebook a major component of their on air persona their tweets become one more reason to not watch - and to recognize that the TIVO treatment of their on-air presence is headed rapidly towards content free territory.

User Generated content is not only trendy, it's cheap. And as much as we love the cute pet tricks and storm footage on i-Report it's a current bottom line improvement that is going to sow the seeds for a meager harvest in just a few years.

Netbooks Lead the Way

It’s awfully easy to become set in your ways, and determine that the best tool for any job is the one that you first learn. Once that preference settles in, your brain and reflexes somehow get patterned into the “one right way” to do a task. We’ve had about twenty years of conditioning with desktops, icons, and folders, and netbooks are telling us it’s time to change.

It’s with interest that I see this is being challenged by the new Linux based operating systems for Netbooks. And the challenge is to the human factors, not the underlying operating system. Innovators noticed that the restrictions of the netbook – seven inch screen, small keyboard were as much as a driver for change as the relatively underpowered CPU and power / battery life restrictions.

They also noted the success of the iPhone’s large icons, choosing from among a number of pre-defined common tasks. Thus, systems such as the CloudOS will look a lot more like the iPhone and a lot less like a desktop of any description, Vista, XP or KDE. They are betting that netbooks will be used a lot like mobile phones. If that is the case, the applications will in the main be simple – and if they are fast, easy to read and stable they will more than make up for a lack of variety.

On the MacBook, I have gotton a lot of use out of the utility “Hazel” – which main function is to sweep icons representing files and folders off the desktop and into the Documents directory where it is searchable but out of sight. Hazel does it automatically, a service that I gladly pay for on the full capabillity laptop. It will be great to have the same built in to the netbook that’s on the purchase list once this recession loosens it’s grip.
