A Blink in the Race

by Andrew McCaskey
Google Netbook and ARM

Rumors of the emergence of a Google Netbook – introduced some time about the same time as the ChromeOS next summer – have just emerged. And, as Michael Arrington of Techcrunch proclaimed that there is a very good chance that there is no Intel Inside. The ARM processor that has proven its worth in the iPhone 3GS could have just enough power for the combination of ChromeOS and limited netbook functionality, that the phrase “only the paranoid survive” made famous by Intel Founder Andy Grove could well come true.

Just like a fatal lapse of attention in the final turn of a race that has gone on for hours, a driver in first place might provide an opening for the car on his tail to make his move.

Add in the actions last week by the Federal Trade Commission investigation into Intel market practices and market share anti-competitive posture, and the stock car race image takes hold. Google (and ARM) might have an opening that could upset the balance of power along more than a few dimensions.

Maybe Intel has reason to be paranoid. You are not paranoid if it’s true that powerful forces are out to get you.

Netbooks Lead the Way

It’s awfully easy to become set in your ways, and determine that the best tool for any job is the one that you first learn. Once that preference settles in, your brain and reflexes somehow get patterned into the “one right way” to do a task. We’ve had about twenty years of conditioning with desktops, icons, and folders, and netbooks are telling us it’s time to change.

It’s with interest that I see this is being challenged by the new Linux based operating systems for Netbooks. And the challenge is to the human factors, not the underlying operating system. Innovators noticed that the restrictions of the netbook – seven inch screen, small keyboard were as much as a driver for change as the relatively underpowered CPU and power / battery life restrictions.

They also noted the success of the iPhone’s large icons, choosing from among a number of pre-defined common tasks. Thus, systems such as the CloudOS will look a lot more like the iPhone and a lot less like a desktop of any description, Vista, XP or KDE. They are betting that netbooks will be used a lot like mobile phones. If that is the case, the applications will in the main be simple – and if they are fast, easy to read and stable they will more than make up for a lack of variety.

On the MacBook, I have gotton a lot of use out of the utility “Hazel” – which main function is to sweep icons representing files and folders off the desktop and into the Documents directory where it is searchable but out of sight. Hazel does it automatically, a service that I gladly pay for on the full capabillity laptop. It will be great to have the same built in to the netbook that’s on the purchase list once this recession loosens it’s grip.

Time for a New UI

Netbooks Lead the Way

It's awfully easy to become set in your ways, and determine that the best tool for any job is the one that you first learn. Once that preference settles in, your brain and reflexes somehow get patterned into the "one right way" to do a task. We've had about twenty years of conditioning with desktops, icons, and folders, and netbooks are telling us it's time to change.

It's with interest that I see this is being challenged by the new Linux based operating systems for Netbooks. And the challenge is to the human factors, not the underlying operating system. Innovators noticed that the restrictions of the netbook - seven inch screen, small keyboard were as much as a driver for change as the relatively underpowered CPU and power / battery life restrictions.

They also noted the success of the iPhone's large icons, choosing from among a number of pre-defined common tasks. Thus, systems such as the CloudOS will look a lot more like the iPhone and a lot less like a desktop of any description, Vista, XP or KDE. They are betting that netbooks will be used a lot like mobile phones. If that is the case, the applications will in the main be simple - and if they are fast, easy to read and stable they will more than make up for a lack of variety.

On the MacBook, I have gotton a lot of use out of the utility "Hazel" - which main function is to sweep icons representing files and folders off the desktop and into the Documents directory where it is searchable but out of sight. Hazel does it automatically, a service that I gladly pay for on the full capabillity laptop. It will be great to have the same built in to the netbook that's on the purchase list once this recession loosens it's grip.

Smokin’ Netbooks

by Andrew McCaskey
They are Going to Be Popular

Just not that popular. Unless the rest of the country is surviving the recession with a lot more optimism than I am seeing here in the industrial Midwest.

I am speaking of the proposal by AT&T to treat netbook computers as wireless appliances that will be hung from the ATT 3G network and heavily subsidized, in exactly the same manner as the regular cellphones. Your new PC would cost $99, after $350 rebate and with substantial penalty for breaking a two year service contract.

Here are a couple of reasons why this is going to be a lot more popular with marketeers pitching the concept than it will be with the public. They are great substitutes for EVDO cards and laptops for some traveling business people. They just are not going to provide the kick that the carriers hope for with the general public.

First, consider portability: The smartphone slips into jeans, backpack or jacket and is ready to go at a moments notice. Just like the smooth packaging of the Samsung Xacti cameras, cellphones scream out “take me along”. Even the sleekest netbook doesn’t have that mobility and while the charging cord in the automobile or wall wart is tolerated, a dangling brick charger is definitely not a part of the plan.

Second – Revenue points: The continuous moneymakers are Ring Tones and Bits. While some heavy users of netbooks will consume the bits, they are not going to generate the steady and trendy revenue that Ringtones represent. For every user who will hang on FaceBook or MySpace, through this device, there will be ten who also want to watch Hulu, play music and do a lot of multi-tasking that require more bandwidth and a huskier machine than the netbook is going to be able to provide. Oh by the way.. download some movies at the same time ? Probably not.

Third: The combination of lock-in contract and waiting for the rebate check combines two of the most despised elements of the wireless carrier marketplace. Net books are hot, but they are not iPhone hot when you push them through Radio Shack with an obsolete business model.

Only a marketeer who is smoking netbooks or something close could seek out a business model that pulls up those two elements of a sale in this economy.

Merry Christmas from SDRNews

by Andrew McCaskey
Two Christmas Gifts for SDRNews Listeners

It’s a day or two early, depending upon what part of the world you are listening – and I want to be among the first to wish you a Merry Christmas. This has been a memorable year for the podcast, and with the best of holiday goodwill, I want to thank you for listening and encouraging the growth of the podcast in 2008 we have made the shift from SlashdotReview to SDRNews, officially adding in coverage of materials from a number of sources, including Slashdot, Digg and Reddit – moving towards a simple daily report on highlights from the world of tech news, business, and government regulation.

The wrapping is not the best, but I hope that you will try out and enjoy two gifts for the New Year: Two new SDRNews podcast editions that may meet your listening needs, and hopefully be of interest to friends and colleagues around the world.

SDRNews7 – a condensed version of the podcast in seven minutes of airtime. One of the things that some of our original listeners said that they missed was the ten minutes/ plus or minus ten seconds of the SlashdotReview format, back when we had the optional music selection at the end of each day’s program. That’s the objective of SDRNews7 – to give you a few minutes back each day in a more concise format and catch most of the stories that we have on the main site and program.

SDRNews-HL , the Headline and Commentary edition is a bit different. It’s structured as a headline list of the Top Stories that you will find on the site, plus whatever notes or commentary that I might have on the stories that we have featured in the previous night’s production. These will go up on the server in the morning, presumably after I have had some time to think about things and read the comments that I wrote the night before.

Thanks again for your faithful listenership.

Environmental Computing

by Andrew McCaskey
New Meaning To Ubiquitous Computing

The Carnegie Mellon students work in extending the “Scratch Interface” is an example of the first tiny steps in extending the computing interface further into our daily environment. Students designed a transducer to interpret the acoustic signature of a fingernail scratched in a pattern along a wooden, plastic or painted surface such as table, whiteboard, or wall. Then, by observing those motions after a short calibration run, were able to extend the control surface several meters in various directions with no other physical coupling or equipment.

Just like the accelerometer that have bee added to to devices such as the iPhone and Wii controllers are extending the interface into at four dimensions, scratch input integrates more fully into the physical world. The scatch input scenario had roughly six separate gestures that could be used to control a music player, answer a phone, turn off Instant Messaging, or similar tasks. Aside from magic lamp interfaces to real world or virtual objects, the dark side of the sensor could be seen as well – detecting when the lockbolt had been thrown, or when it had been only latched. Which will be the first to make it into the real world ?

The scatch input scenario had roughly six separate gestures that could be used to control a music player, answer a phone, turn off Instant Messaging, or similar tasks. Aside from magic lamp interfaces to real world or virtual objects, the dark side of the sensor could be seen as well - detecting when the lockbolt had been thrown, or when it had been only latched. Which will be the first to make it into the real world ?

New Block D Auction

by Andrew McCaskey
As cumbersome as the Block D auction appears to be it is going to have one desirable effect. It’s only a shame that we did not have one thirty years ago.

Block D was pulled during the auction last spring, as no bidder was willing to meet the $1.3 Billion reserve price, encumbered with the requirement that the allocations be shared with public health and safety systems on a secondary basis.

The new auction is really two sets: one auction at the reduced reserve price of around $750Million for nationwide license to the spectrum block, the other for around sixty regional licenses that must be used for expansion using either LTE or WiMax technologies.

As I understand the plan, if the nationwide block meets the reserve price, the winner gets to take all, including the public safety shared arrangement. If the nationwide block does not sell for the asking price, then the parallel regional licenses will go. The highest bidders and the winning technology will take all.

WiMax or LTE, the losing bidders and technology will really lose. The winner will be named as the technology of choice.

Contrast the crazy quilt of analog, CDMA,TDMA,GSM and additional frequency variants that we tolerated for thirty years in the US. That lack of standard and “letting the market decide” took time that can’t be afforded today.

At least someone is trying to make a decision. The market still decides – it just decides a lot more quickly.

Social Networking Limits

by Andrew McCaskey
Setting up a Facebook/YouTube clone for various intelligence agencies sounds like a good idea. The public enthusiasm is a reward for agencies working to 1) Get over the same sorts of behavior that allowed the attacks of 9/11 to occur 2) Avoid criticism on aged equipment and procedures like their counterparts at the FAA with the Air Traffic Control System and 3) capitalize on the current trend and buzz associated with social media in all forms.

It all sounds like a wonderful PR spin to me. As much as we would all like for it to be true, there have got to be some incredible issues on "how does that happen really ?"

Hacking the Toll Road

by Andrew McCaskey
The MIT article on hacking Toll Road transponders points out several issues for concern.

Many interference complaints to broadcast television in the 1950′s and 1960′s actually traced back to poor manufacturing and design. The same tendency to save a few cents on a part or omit code for at least some protection to script kiddie levels of hacking continue, apparently, in all sorts of designs for various computer and wireless devices.

The more serious effect, however, is the assumption by the public and the legal system that complexity equals security – that something that is obviously “high-tech” is going to be inherently stable, secure, and worthy of trust.

Bad guys seem to be on top of the technology, looking for any advantage to give them a momentary edge. For example, the value of the cloned Toll Road iPass ID is not the few dollars in stolen tolls, but the ability to “prove” that you and your vehicle were 30 miles away from the crime scene.
Anyone traveling who does not use a VPN on any open wifi node is asking for trouble. In places like O’Hare you will see scores of rogue “Free WiFi”, “OpenWiFi” just waiting for the unsuspecting to check a bank balance.

War driving in any neighborhood will detect many “encrypted” wifi networks, 90% of which are on WEP, known to be easily hacked for a number of years.

The bad guys know the tricks, but the public is the loser.

Mix and Match Alternate Energy

by Andrew McCaskey
Here’s why favoring one form of alternative energy over another is bad science and worse policy: YMMV. Your mileage may vary. and when, what and how will certainly vary. Therein is the problem when governments try to encourage or subsidize one form of alternate energy over another.

Two articles today point this out: The study in the UK that roof mounted wind turbines are virtually useless as a source of energy in urban environments – from an efficiency standpoint – and the advances in production of solar cells that could approach the magic crossover point of $1 per watt.

The reason for poor performance of the roof-top turbines is the disruption of airflow by buildings, billboards and other urban structures that disrupt the regular wind flow, as compared with installations in rural areas without trees – the stereotypical windswept plains.

Conversely, these same rooftops in most areas of the world offer an excellent mounting point and distribution for solar photo-voltaic conversion, especially in either concentrator form or using large arrays of very low cost cells, even if they are not particularly efficient – such as those being produced in Ohio, Germany, and Arizona featured in the IEEE article.
It looks to me that in addition to net neutrality as policy we need some public policy that includes ‘alternate energy neutrality’ in subsidization and support. Else we end up with something like the ‘ethanol from corn’ handout that starves appropriate technology at the expense of the politically connected.

Holiday Twitter Tech

by Andrew McCaskey
I think that I am getting the hang of some of this Twittering. Experienced users are probably too polite to let me know what a dolt I am being on the system. – But, as Michelle Lentz emphasized you have to jump in and keep swimming so that you will be able to ‘get’ Twitter.

I am not even keeping up with the rest of the Tech Podcasters – many or most of whom have moved on to FriendFeed. I have to take it one step at a time.

So, if you’d like to follow along, please look me up as Twitter id axmc.

Professionally, I am keeping up with folks on LinkedIn. Not that there is the absense of professionalism on Twitter – it’s just different.

I just received an invite from a researcher who is planning to match up a group of Baby Boomers with some GenY counterparts. The plan is to seed the conversation with some debatable topics and let the generation wars begin. It’s going to be fun.

Holiday Twitter Tech

by Andrew McCaskey
I think that I am getting the hang of some of this Twittering. Experienced users are probably too polite to let me know what a dolt I am being on the system. - But, as Michelle Lentz emphasized you have to jump in and keep swimming so that you will be able to 'get' Twitter.

I am not even keeping up with the rest of the Tech Podcasters - many or most of whom have moved on to FriendFeed. I have to take it one step at a time.

So, if you'd like to follow along, please look me up as Twitter id axmc.

Professionally, I am keeping up with folks on LinkedIn. Not that there is the absense of professionalism on Twitter - it's just different.

I just received an invite from a researcher who is planning to match up a group of Baby Boomers with some GenY counterparts. The plan is to seed the conversation with some debatable topics and let the generation wars begin. It's going to be fun.
