Apple TV is a Natural Play

by Andrew McCaskey
The Power in the ITunes Music Store

There has got to be some credibility in the multiple rumors that are floating concerning the pitch from Apple to various television networks and content owners to allow Apple to provide television content for a monthly $30-$40 fee through iTunes. Disney seems to be the most likely content provider to buy into the deal, based on the close relationship that Disney and Pixar have had over the years.

If there is one thing that Apple has been able to do, it is to show how to effectively sell and deliver digital content efficiently. And with close to 100million installations of the iTunes Music Store software on Windows machines, it has the penetration and delivery depth that even Hulu will envy.

One player that will be a lot more difficult to grab will be NBC Universal, especially if the proposed merger with Comcast goes into effect. That could put NBC at a significant dis-advantage with competitive material available on the iTunes platform and an expectation that even more programming be available online in some form.

It didn’t have to be that way – reasonable channel packages from cable and satellite providers that got rid of the shopper channels, television preachers, infomercial channels and similar dreck at $85 a month and moved to that $35 price point could have prevented the whole problem.

Apple just sees a consumer need and prepared a product that people will want at a price they are more than willing to pay. Nothing evil about that. {sharethis}

House Payments and Memory Chips

by Andrew McCaskey
It’s Sort of Relative

Engineers from North Carolina State University have created a new fingernail-size chip that can hold 1 trillion bytes (a terabyte) of data. The nanostructured Nickel Magnesium Oxide Ni-MgO system can store up to 20 high-definition DVDs or 250 million pages of text.

Using selective doping at nanoscale and adds the metal nickel to magnesium oxide, a ceramic. The resulting material contained clusters of nickel atoms no bigger than 10 square nanometers – a pinhead has a diameter of 1 million nanometers. The discovery represents a 90% size reduction compared with today’s techniques, and an advancement that could boost computer storage capacity.

If you are like me, in a few years you can tell your grandchildren about 8k DRAM boards from the 1970′s that set you back the cost of a house payment. They may find that mildly amusing, or they may not – and take their keychain with the 1TB drive off to plug into their electric car.

You can rest assured that electric car will be several house payments.

House Payments and Memory Chips

by Andrew McCaskey
It's Sort of Relative

Engineers from North Carolina State University have created a new fingernail-size chip that can hold 1 trillion bytes (a terabyte) of data. The nanostructured Nickel Magnesium Oxide Ni-MgO system can store up to 20 high-definition DVDs or 250 million pages of text.

Using selective doping at nanoscale and adds the metal nickel to magnesium oxide, a ceramic. The resulting material contained clusters of nickel atoms no bigger than 10 square nanometers - a pinhead has a diameter of 1 million nanometers. The discovery represents a 90% size reduction compared with today's techniques, and an advancement that could boost computer storage capacity.

If you are like me, in a few years you can tell your grandchildren about 8k DRAM boards from the 1970's that set you back the cost of a house payment. They may find that mildly amusing, or they may not - and take their keychain with the 1TB drive off to plug into their electric car.

You can rest assured that electric car will be several house payments.

KISS- Keep It Simple, Searchable

by Andrew McCaskey
KISS

Robert Scoble just posted a list of reasons that he thinks Twitter could soon have a value of between five and ten billion dollars. It points out the fact that Twitter obeys the primary rule for adoption: Keep It Simple (and) Searchable. That’s the essence of any online activity today, and Twitter and the emerging ecosystem follows that rule expertly.

Scoble noted that as he traveled around the world, it seemed that Twitter resonated more solidly with business users. Most were using Twitter to spam their followers – but no matter. The fact was that they had adopted it, were using it and refinement would come later.

He noted that Celebrities had moved to Twitter – and with some digging found that their agents privately told them that Twitter was the social networking tool that most celebrities could understand. Add to that the convenience of a mobile device and the ability to participate in quick bursts whenever the mood struck and receive instant feedback, and a star was born.

The final cog in the machine is search. Simple search, keyword search, hashtag, twitterfall, and an entire ecosystem of tools that can answer business questions, judge the immediate mood of customers and clients, and be reachable from the same mobile device — and you can see that Twitter is ready to be monitized at modest ($100 a month) levels.

Twitter and Mainstream Media

by Andrew McCaskey
Which Dog is Wagging ?

All of the excitement about Twitter raises a question: Is Twitter becoming popular as an alternative to Mainstream Media, or is it becoming popular because of it ? Likewise is the adoption of Twitter a sea change driven by underlying improvements in responsiveness and awareness, or is it simply a cynical way of aligning with what is hopefully a new audience demographic, which has so far escaped ? I bet the latter. Just follow the money.

CNN and NBS have made Twitter a second tier personality in their news operations. NPR has harnessed Twitter as an interactive audience tool for political events. Millions became aware of Twitter through Oprah. From all appearances, there’s a cleaning out of the old guard and rapid alignment with the perceived voice of the people.

For CNN, it’s a two sided win: Connect with a non-news consuming demographic and reduce costs in a major way – all at the same time. What’s not to like ? Instead of having to put a bureau staffer in Sofia, Bulgaria – just pull up a blogger and monitor some tweets from there and hold in reserve. In the event that something of note happens there, your anchor person can pull the blogger connection, read an excerpt and the latest tweets from the area, and then ask for comments, again on Twitter. As slack jawed comments roll in from Little Rock, New York, Moline and Portland, you read them on air, pull up some stock photos and you’ve replaced the on the ground Paid Correspondent with content that is, as they say “close enough for government work”.

Or a Twitter length attention span. {sharethis}

From all appearances, there's a cleaning out of the old guard and rapid alignment with the perceived voice of the people.

For CNN, it's a two sided win: Connect with a non-news consuming demographic and reduce costs in a major way - all at the same time. What's not to like ? Instead of having to put a bureau staffer in Sofia, Bulgaria - just pull up a blogger and monitor some tweets from there and hold in reserve. In the event that something of note happens there, your anchor person can pull the blogger connection, read an excerpt and the latest tweets from the area, and then ask for comments, again on Twitter. As slack jawed comments roll in from Little Rock, New York, Moline and Portland, you read them on air, pull up some stock photos and you've replaced the on the ground Paid Correspondent with content that is, as they say "close enough for government work".

Or a Twitter length attention span. {sharethis}

More Than Just Content

by Andrew McCaskey

Packaged Experience

The transition to electronic distribution of what we call content, delivered the past four hundred years or so by newspaper is tricky. The solution that satisfies is going to be more complex than Kindle-like first generation products. The big rewards are going to go to those who figure out out to combine and offer a cost effective version of the packaged experience. Until that time, there are going to be fits and starts.

The video featured today offers a tour of the Journalism lab at the New York Times. Stepping through all the likely suspects for displacing the newspaper, one by one – it’s striking to see that the satisfying experience is still elusive. There have been at least eighty years of attempts to replace the newspaper delivery by radio fax, data during blanking intervals on analog television, and similar scheme printing out the paper overnight at the subscriber’s home. The ability to deliver the content is only the first part of the puzzle. Delivering the content in a compelling manner, aligning with a variety of use scenarios and offering a reason to switch – all three have to line up, or we are still in the midst of a science fair project.

Reasons Behind Net Video Growth

by Andrew McCaskey
One Reason Why the Media is Dying:

It’s just too slow

Hulu gained 10 Million Viewers in February, according to CommScore VideoMetrix . Google video touched 53 Million unique viewers, with an average of 134 minutes. Not only is this bad news, this is particularly bad news in the demographic that matters the most to advertisers and media companies. The one thing in common that the leaders enjoy ? Short form content, consumable on the run, or in short segments.

We all have attention spans that are noticeably shorter – due almost exclusively to the pace of our workday environment, particularly in the present stress of a depression and a reset of the entire economy. The feeling is that our very survival – if not prosperity – depends on being hyper alert to the slightest passing trend, fact or rumor. What used to work, isn’t working. What might work, I need to know about.

We might blame it on the economy.

It may be the real reason has been there all along – that television is a colossal waste of time.

On the Way to the Web

by Andrew McCaskey
Book Review

On The Way to The Web – by Michael A Banks – The Secret History of the Internet and its Founders. [ISBN 978-1-4302-0869-3] If you were active in the world of small computers from S-100 days of the late 1970′s and early 1980′s forward, you’ll enjoy a quick read of this book.

The ARPANET saga beginning in 1969 is well told and familar. What’s left out in the retelling by most other authors is the incredible energy of the various online services such as GE Information Services, Compuserve, Delphi and others. All were struggling mightily with consumers who would not or could not pay the $60 or $100 per hour charges of services such as Lockheed’s NEXIS or the Dow Jones Information Service. How the Compuserve CB Simulator and the worlds of gaming and chat sucked in consumers and their wallets.

The WELL, the SOURCE, Prodigy, the birth of AOL, e-World, PeopleLINK, GEIS, GENIE,PC-Link, ByteInformationExchange – are all there with scores of others.

What we take for granted today – from the protocol TCP/IP and the ability to communicate on a common email system to the ability to move files about – have some very deep roots in those formative years. And the struggle for monetization and search for a business model was as much of a struggle for those entreprenuers as it is for those of us today trying to figure out new media, social media and rest.

On The Way to The Web - by Michael A Banks - The Secret History of the Internet and its Founders. [ISBN 978-1-4302-0869-3] If you were active in the world of small computers from S-100 days of the late 1970's and early 1980's forward, you'll enjoy a quick read of this book.

The ARPANET saga beginning in 1969 is well told and familar. What's left out in the retelling by most other authors is the incredible energy of the various online services such as GE Information Services, Compuserve, Delphi and others. All were struggling mightily with consumers who would not or could not pay the $60 or $100 per hour charges of services such as Lockheed's NEXIS or the Dow Jones Information Service. How the Compuserve CB Simulator and the worlds of gaming and chat sucked in consumers and their wallets.

The WELL, the SOURCE, Prodigy, the birth of AOL, e-World, PeopleLINK, GEIS, GENIE,PC-Link, ByteInformationExchange - are all there with scores of others.

What we take for granted today - from the protocol TCP/IP and the ability to communicate on a common email system to the ability to move files about - have some very deep roots in those formative years. And the struggle for monetization and search for a business model was as much of a struggle for those entreprenuers as it is for those of us today trying to figure out new media, social media and rest.

Hulu Shows Who is Boss

by Andrew McCaskey
Just to Show Who’s Boss

In case there was any doubt, the site Hulu.com is owned by the networks that supply content to it. It had a long run on the the chain but when it got to the end the run was over. That’s what happens when you get close to the edge of a business model.

There is no doubt that virtually every household with reduced family income is taking a long and hard look at at their cable and satellite TV expense. Eight Hundred and Twenty channels of content might impress somebody, but once you subtract out content that you don’t want at all, content that you can live without, and then time shift among that that you do want, you quickly arrive at the conclusion that the entertainment and content received, on a per hour actually consumed basis, is pretty expensive.

That probably explains at least part of the phenomenal growth of Hulu.com – preserving brand identity, star power and network properties. What it does not explain is the kneejerk denial of that content to Boxee.com and TV.com in today’s announcement. It looks like the only thing – aside from making it convenient for consumers to put the selection of Hulu programming on a large flat screen, give them a great user interface, and integration content of all sorts – that it offered was offering it in one place.

It should discourage Boxee from getting any content ideas. But it won’t discourage someone.

The Moving Finger Writes in Technology

by Andrew McCaskey
And The Finger, Having Writ, moves on..

Two articles today are strangely related – one of the technology of satellite radio and the content providers who’s business has been staked upon it, and the other on the increasing and unexpected role of cheap rabbit ear antennas in the television broadcasting and entertainment business.

The premised of the article in Slate is that to survive, Sirius/XM must realize that they are riding a dead horse technology with impossible cost structures in a world that had irrevocably changed the day that they turned the satellites on. Had they gone to air in 1988, they would have had a twelve or fifteen year period of exclusiveity. As it turned out, they launched in 2001, after Napster – which set expectations of content for free, and after the iPod, which set , along with podcasting, the expectation of infinite variety and the possibility of a match to every taste.

Over the air (OTA) antennas were never more than an afterthought in the video universe as cable and satellite delivery duked it out, with telcos lusting from the sidelines and throwing a punch when they could. Nothing melts a $120/month premium satellite package more quickly that good rabbit ears and the speedy broadband that every geek is going to give up only above electricity and mortgage payment.

The Moving Finger Writes in Technology

by Andrew McCaskey
And The Finger, Having Writ, moves on..

Two articles today are strangely related - one of the technology of satellite radio and the content providers who's business has been staked upon it, and the other on the increasing and unexpected role of cheap rabbit ear antennas in the television broadcasting and entertainment business.

As it turned out, they launched in 2001, after Napster - which set expectations of content for free, and after the iPod, which set , along with podcasting, the expectation of infinite variety and the possibility of a match to every taste.

Over the air (OTA) antennas were never more than an afterthought in the video universe as cable and satellite delivery duked it out, with telcos lusting from the sidelines and throwing a punch when they could. Now, the lowly rabbit ear antenna is a significant threat, in a world where Hulu, Boxee, Roku/Netflix, and bittorrent suck away premium content - that is time shifted anyway - leaving only realtime events such as news and sporting events. Nothing melts a $120/month premium satellite package more quickly that good rabbit ears and the speedy broadband that every geek is going to give up only above electricity and mortgage payment.

Joost Barely Back on iPhone

by Andrew McCaskey
Back on the Radar

Joost has pulled back from their near death experience with a promising app for the iPhone. If their content was compelling they might have a case – but I give them a Fail.

CNET had an overall positive article on the re-emergence of Joost, noting that with a catalog of 40,000 videos there was a remarkable change in tone from the former video offerings on the iPhone – namely skateboard tricks from YouTube and assorted nonsense. As we have seen for the past two years at Slashdotreview / SDRNews, there are some YouTube content gems, but they are hard to find. And, as the ongoing task of locating and publicizing video content shows, the volume may be increasing but I am not sure that that quality is keeping pace.

Joost has the same problem. Insisting on a stand alone client, plus a slow beta rollout (where I doled out a few hundred custom invites from SDRNews) added just enough aggravation that the smooth introduction of Hulu’s browser based service and superior content.

Joost is going to get some near term press. They better move some higher quality content in than the Victoria’s Secret Runway and Sex Line Grandma that were the picks to demonstrate their iPhone app. If that is the best they can do for content, they’ll get what they deserve in the marketplace. Namely, a quick trip to the same place the Joost download client went.
