      We are getting near the end of the first publication round on the HP Tech Forum and Expo project – If you have not taken time to step through the video content located at the HP Tech Forum Tab or the Events Tab, please have a look. We have a few more items to post, and review of the material to try to expand the listings and correct mistakes.

      We have a total of sixty items – and now are getting ready to begin re-distribution on YouTube, AOL Video and a number of other video channels. The mixture of streaming live interviews, product interviews, team planning video sessions and informal backchannel video should give viewers a good feeling for the scope of the event and some of the content.

      How do Events fit in to SDRNews ?

      The Events business is growing- although it is very intense and demanding as far as time and resources. As events occur, they get their own featured tab for a few weeks, then that tab disappears and a given event merges back into the general Events tab.

      The Events are a promotion for the main podcast SDRNews. If someone has special interests in an Event such as Drupalcamp or HP Tech Forum and finds the site for that reason, the hope is that they will sample the SDRNews podcast in the player and subscribe.

        A Rotten Idea – GPS Auto Tracking

        GPS Tracking for Gasoline Tax

        The Kansas City Star reports that there are trials underway at the University of Iowa involving GPS tracking for tax enforcement. With a target date of 2020, they will need those 11 years of lead time to handle the first round of lawsuits.

        The notion is that as fuel efficiency increases, revenues from the gasoline tax go down. The tech solution is to place GPS trackers on every vehicle and then read them remotely and send a bill each month based on the exact miles driven. This would, supposedly replace the 18 cents per gallon gas tax with a mileage tax of 1 or 2 cents per mile driven.

        There seem to be an increasing number of things that get investigated without thinking – and this is a prime candidate. Just because you can doesn’t mean that you should.

        Or maybe you’d be willing to sell your right to privacy of movement for half a penny a mile ? If your auto gets a bit better than 20 mpg and the gas tax is roughly 18 cents, you’d “save” 16 cents and be able to drive around 32 miles on the difference.

        This sounds like a non-starter. And the EFF and ACLU have not even begun to sharpen up their knives. As well they should.{sharethis}

          More Than Just Content

          Packaged Experience

          The transition to electronic distribution of what we call content, delivered the past four hundred years or so by newspaper is tricky. The solution that satisfies is going to be more complex than Kindle-like first generation products. The big rewards are going to go to those who figure out out to combine and offer a cost effective version of the packaged experience. Until that time, there are going to be fits and starts.

          The video featured today offers a tour of the Journalism lab at the New York Times. Stepping through all the likely suspects for displacing the newspaper, one by one – it’s striking to see that the satisfying experience is still elusive. There have been at least eighty years of attempts to replace the newspaper delivery by radio fax, data during blanking intervals on analog television, and similar scheme printing out the paper overnight at the subscriber’s home. The ability to deliver the content is only the first part of the puzzle. Delivering the content in a compelling manner, aligning with a variety of use scenarios and offering a reason to switch – all three have to line up, or we are still in the midst of a science fair project.

            Mobile GPS and Web Server

            Two Mobile Apps

            Two mobile app topics in the news today – for different reasons. First, the announcement concerning the iPhone as a mobile web server, and secondly the mobile privacy issue being considered in the Georgia legislature concerning GPS tracking.

            The Georgia case involves the notion that automated systems of surveillance should be held to a higher privacy standard than traditional physical observation. Since the early 1980′s it’s been ruled that law enforcement should be permitted to slap a GPS tracker on any vehicle that was on public display or could be observed publicly. This presumably applied to vehicles parked on the street or in a public garage, but protected vehicles parked on private property. Some are now advocating a closer look, saying that the ability to observe 24×7 without further exposure is significantly different than the physical tail of officers following a citizen with probably risk of observation by the target that, as a practical matter, greatly reduced the length of time and conditions that permitted observation.

            The other news – from the Japan version of the App Store for the Apple iPhone – an app that enables the iPhone to become a functional web server – hosting web pages and traffic.

            Combine the two, and you have a very interesting capability: a self tracker that makes it’s position known on a web page that it itself hosts. For good or for ill, once again, the Genie is out of the Bottle.

                What’s Up With Sprint in Las Vegas ?

                Getting ready for the big New Media Expo – I’ve checked into the Hilton with great hopes to avoid the $13.99 per day internet charge by firing up the EVDO card from Sprint.

                Well, it’s not going well. It shows both EVDO and 1rxtt but will not connect, and widely varying signal levels.

                At least the Airport Express lets me create a secure hotspot so that I can run several devices without pulling cables or going on and off the network, resulting in multiple connect charges.

                Lots of Twitter activity – and so I am trying to get the show up promptly and not get into the three hours later time warp, at least until tomorrow night.

                That one is going to be the push-up, so the show may be erratically posted for air time Friday morning.

                    Part Solar, Part Snake Oil

                    Never miss an opportunity for good market positioning and setting a concept in the public’s mind.

                    With bilions of dollars invested in the Prius Hybrid Drive technology, Toyota is positioned to win big. And it does not hurt at all to get a little bit of an edge – even though it’s of negligible value from a practical standpoint.

                    One of the questions that a Midwesterner asks of any of these electric car demos is how the heater and the airconditioning will be powered. The heater, of course is a lifesaving necessity in a vehicle – and during much of the summer, air conditioning is running a close second from a psychological if not physical standpoint.

                    I imagine that the 5 kilowatt power level needed to run the compressor for traditional air conditioning is going to be offset by the rooftop solar in a very, very small way. On the other hand,there is the one big battery on the Prius that would benefit from a 12 hour a day trickle charge, which is about all the current tha a roof top array could produce.

                    Just don’t imply that the solar panels will power much more than a set of fans to clear the hot air out of the car while it is parked.

                        Was it worth two days of driving for one day of PodCamp ? Absolutely.

                        I made the trip from the temporary summer place in VA back to the midwest, just in time for the one day event near Columbus, the first edition of PodcampOhio.

                        Angelo Mandato and a group of Podcamp volunteers put together an excellent event, with support from a number of local businesses- and the enthusiasm of participants that arrived from surrounding states.

                        If you have an opportunity to participate in a podCamp event – regardless of your interest in actually producing a podcast of your own – I think you will conclude it is time and money well spent.

                        If you would like to get some of the formal class content online – it should be up within a few days.

                            GPS Will Make Only Some of Us Dumb

                            The article today speculates that the increased availability of GPS, especially on smartphones such as the iPhone 3G will quickly reduce the minimal number of people walking, driving or flying that have a good sense of direction.

                            I’ve often wondered how much, on the ground our military depends upon GPS and technology driven geographic information systems as opposed to good old fashioned situational awareness and reliance on good maps.

                            The point of the article is that laziness and distraction are going to quickly remove the art of map reading and orienting to the ground truth from both military and civilian populations.

                            I think that’s probably going to happen. Most especially it is going to happen to those who weren’t paying attention anyway. The rest of us are going to be fine.

                                The Plan Comes Together

                                Infoworld laid out their guess as to the grand strategy of the Apple represented by the 3G version of the iPhone. And regardless of your fanboy status for the products and company, you have to admit that there is a good story to tell.

                                First of all, some perspective and personal experience. There have been only two phones in the past fifteen years that I would classify as elegant from a user interface standpoint. The first was a Nokia 5800 from AT&T with the thumb rocker to scroll through the memory – on the old TDMA network. Carried it for maybe five years. The other is what is now the first generation of the iPhone, the EDGE version. Both are a pleasure to use.

                                In between, a stream of Motorola, LG, Samsung, Audiovox, Ericsson and similar phones – all of which had software so poor that the first chance to bolt was automatic.

                                Infoworld points out that Apple’s iPhone strength is not the hardware – it is the combination of UI, the rebranded .mac cloud and virtual apps, the App Store, the vetting of developer products, the automatic upgrade of the software on both EDGE and 3G hardware, in fact the entire ecosystem.

                                It’s moving towards the benevolent dictatorship. What are we giving up on the way down the golden path ?
