    The iTunes Moment for Television

    Television, As We Know It

    Andrew Baron is the Founder of Rocketboom, and he says that, contrary to the opinion voiced over the weekend by a Microsoft exec, television, as we know it has a good deal of kick left in it. Plus, the momentum from hundreds of millions of dollars in projects that are funded well over the next two years.

    “The industry has about two to three years to adapt or face its iTunes moment,” said Highfield, the managing director of consumer and online at Microsoft UK, at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival. “And it will take at least that long for media brands to build credible, truly digital brands.”

    Traditional media owners must make the move, “The traditional television business has to aggressively move its content online, build a critical mass of content that the traditional buyers of airtime will understand and buy into,” he added. “They want to see TV-like reach and impact.”

    I think Andrew’s on the wrong side of this one. His argument is the sunk cost of productions already underway have the next two years spoken for. I’d be afraid that means that in two years the industry would be all dressed up and no place to go. Or at least a lot fewer to go with.

      eBay’s Lost Chances

      It’s No Fun Anymore

      A great guest editorial in Techcrunch explains a lot about eBay’s problems. They are not going to get better anytime soon. The reason is that eBay is simply not much fun any more. And, as an online experience they have been replaced by Facebook pages, online video (both You Tube and Hulu) and Twitterstreams.

      In 2000, eBay tapped into both the transition from dialup to broadband, as well as the American fascination with discovery, a bargain, interactive suspense, serendipity, and a chance for bragging rights for beanie babies, collectables and eventually houses, motorcycles and all manner of goods. By 2004 half the US internet population signed on to eBay, most often from work to check on auctions or just surf.

      That was the peak, By early 2007 Facebook opened it’s API, permitting further entertaining applications – and at the same time eBay began to favor “buy it now” over auctions. In December 2008, eBay’s visitors accounted for only 1.5 percent of total minutes spent online (according to comScore Media Metrix). The leader board for top online properties showed Google, home of YouTube.com, and Fox Interactive Media, which includes MySpace.com, in the top five.

      Never underestimate the business value of fun.

        Politics and Unintended Consequences

        Use a Proxy, Do the Time

        It’s always dangerous when politicians are using technology to show how tough they are on crime.

        An example is the New Federal rules that could count the use of Proxy servers in a computerized crime as “sophisticated”. The ruling calls for a 25% longer jail sentence, using the line of reasoning that judges use in stiffer sentences when a gun is used in a robbery.

        The Electronic Frontier Foundation is on top of the case, for a number of reasons: Reasons of privacy online. Secondly, unintended consequences for corporations when employees abuse VPN’s, or the situation where someone could use a proxy without their knowledge,as an ISP or cell phone provider could use proxies without users’ knowledge to reroute traffic.

        TOR, the Internet anonymizer that is promoted by EFF, is also targeted in the new legislation. Some activists believe this legislation is an effort to stop leaked US Government information from reaching outside sources, such as Wikileaks.

        Much like the recent Boston College incident where students were found with “alternate operating systems” where commands could be directly typed in at a prompt and were suspected cybercrooks at best and cyberterrorists at worst – it’s a good thing the EFF is speaking in a language understood by politicians.

          Windows 7 Will Still Make It

          In Spite of Slow Moving Enterprise Adoption, Win 7 Will Prevail

          If you are seeking a good strong headline, survey over a thousand IT managers and ask them if they are going to adopt Windows 7 within the first year of release. The headline will return a big, interesting number (83%) and readers of the survey will be surprised. Why ? Because they are readers in search of a headline. With a little reflection, it should come as little surprise that the number is not higher.

          The false implication is that those who are currently on XP, (apparently around 60%) will move to Windows 7 seeking more modern machines, without the expense and turmorial of moving to the bloated Vista OS. I think that’s not the case in most organizations – they will be content to remain on XP for the next year or two, further letting the market stabilize, and then slowly movingto adopt Windows 7.

          Windows 7 will still make it, though – on the strength of consumer systems that will be preloaded with Windows7, require consumers to step back two generations (Win7 to Vista to XP) .There’s no desire to downgrade to Vista. Paying for two downgrade actions (both WIn7 to Vista, Vista to XP) to get to XP would be a powerful incentive to consumers NOT to break out of the Win7 OS. As painful as it is to downgrade, the consumer demand for laptops and desktop machine/family entertainment machines will put Win 7 in the driver’s seat. Eventually.

The headline will return a big, interesting number (83%) and readers of the survey will be surprised. Why ? Because they are readers in search of a headline. With a little reflection, it should come as little surprise that the number is not higher. The false implication is that those who are currently on XP, (apparently around 60%) will move to Windows 7 seeking more modern machines, without the expense and turmorial of moving to the bloated Vista OS. I think that's not the case in most organizations - they will be content to remain on XP for the next year or two, further letting the market stabilize, and then slowly movingto adopt Windows 7. Windows 7 will still make it, though - on the strength of consumer systems that will be preloaded with Windows7, require consumers to step back two generations (Win7 to Vista to XP) .There's no desire to downgrade to Vista. Paying for two downgrade actions (both WIn7 to Vista, Vista to XP) to get to XP would be a powerful incentive to consumers NOT to break out of the Win7 OS. As painful as it is to downgrade, the consumer demand for laptops and desktop machine/family entertainment machines will put Win 7 in the driver's seat. Eventually.             Skype for Sale. Really ?

            How Much of a Good Deal?

            Every good deal requires a buyer and a seller. We know who the seller is but the buyer ? Not so clear.

            In a somewhat defensive mood last week, the CEO of eBay, John Donahue fended off questions from reporters on the poor 4Q performance of the company and just happened to mention that Skype was a “great stand-alone business”. Just in case anyone missed that broad hint he followed up with “that “the synergies between Skype and the other parts of our portfolio are minimal. We’re going to continue to run and operate the business. It’s not a distraction currently. And at such time when we have further announcements on that, we’ll let you know.”

            Ebay bought Skype in 2005 for $2.6 billion- causing some jaw-drops within the investment community – and now eBay has finally admitted since then that it hugely overpaid for the business.

            Does Skype get absorbed by Google ? Is there some reason that telcos like Verizon or Sprint need them ? Last week we spoke about the flattening of the Skype rate of growth in revenues – and even once you get past 400 million or so finding new subscribers.

            It may be that eBay is exactly like a few million non-corporate types in homes and automobiles: upside down. The trouble is, in bricks and mortar or vehicles you can ride it out. IP communications get devalued a lot more quickly.

            eBay needs to take a lesson from Yahoo and if a buyer appears, recognize that 40% of something is better than 100% of nothing two years down the road.

              Everyone Hates Pollution. Piracy not so much.

              Arts+Labs is the newest collaboration of songwriters, content producers and big media that is trying to change the vocabulary in the internet business. In a lengthy article, Ars Technica in essence spins the tale of a “stalking horse” that urges the public to fight “internet pollution”. Interesting term, defined in familiar ways to include viruses, spyware, malware, phishing attacks, and, incidentally, downloading of pirated content.

              Arts+Labs suggests that this “internet pollution” is the source of the congestion on the internet, and that by going through “approved” sites like Hulu.com, Veoh.com, Netflix, Joost, and so forth – the pipes will get cleaned and the world of limitless entertainment will be ours. If congestion is the problem, it looks like bits are bits. If there is some other problem – like control of content, then there is some serious misrepresentation going on.

              Who’s behind Arts+Labs ? Why, it’s our old content and delivery friends: NBC Universal, AT&T, Viacom and of course our connection for all things Vista and DRM: Microsoft.

                  The SANS Institute study that claims the four minute compromise window on a Windows PC is pretty worrisome. I am not sure of all of the assumptions, just the conclusion that it will be found and compromised faster than the needed patches can be downloaded is reason enough to give at least some credence to the long term viablility of Vista in the enterprise environment.

                  I was under the impression that the vast majority of compromised machines were poorly maintained Windows 98 many without even the basic Service Pack 1 that had been upgraded into some sort of persistant connection.

                  The SANS study seems to imply that is not the case.

                  Part Two:

                  Add to that the continuing risk of human engineering or, in the case of the San Francisio personnel situation, a single human point of failure. At least the individual is in custody and has not, to date, walked in front of a moving truck.

                  Conclusion: The human factor is going to trump technology, even when rigorously applied. The practices that led to the San Francisco situation are everas much a vulnerablility as are the poorly patched Win98 machine on the $19 DSL connection at Grandma’s.

                      There is nothing like the search for a dramatic headline that is almost content free.

                      Hence the CNET story, linked above – “Internet to hit full capacity by 2010″ – where some VP from ATandT is making the point that there is going to be some very high level of capital investment made. What he fails to point out is that companies like like his are rushing full bore into soaking up that bandwidth with video offerings trying to do an end run around the cable television industry. His speculation that “everything will go HD very soon, and HD is 7 to ten times more bandwidth intensive.

                      Everything is far from going HD – if that same company is trying to call 1.5MB DSL “broadband” to provide access to that content.

                      I don’t think you can have it both ways.
