The success of the iPhone is due in no small measure to the army of developers that are creating apps while Apple handles the commmercial engine, credit and collections. A great app, especially a game can literally print money for a developer.

Cyberwar Skeptic

by Andrew McCaskey
Wednesday, 08 April 2009 22:40

It’s OverStated, for Effect

I love a good political / technical conspiracy as much as anyone, but I have the sneaking feeling that the combined stories of power and utility grid hacking released within a day or two from the Wall Street Journal, Wired, multiple newspapers and the military are a ramp up for some budget discussions next week, rather than a new revelation. Vulnerabilities have always existed, as have the desire of enemies to exploit those openings to their own ends.

The “Sleeper Cell” attack vector has been an entertaining staple of fiction for at least fifty years. Only in this scenario, it is some bit of obscure code planted in a vulnerable piece of switchgear, routing, or load-shedding equipment awaiting the call of the evil genius in time of war or crisis or blackmail.

Countermeasures are, of course, not discussed. Nor should they be. However, I’d like to think that the problem is not as concentrated and evil as the popular press (driving a political agenda) might lead you to believe. It’s much like the discussion of encryption: Statements like ” There is less than one chance in 10 e24 of the code being broken” leads you to the brute force approach that takes one solution, tries it , fails ,discards and then concludes only 10e24 minus one to go. In practice, cracking such a code depends upon algortihms that eliminate millions of combinations at a time, not one at a time.

I expect that if millions of remote reading electrical meters are affected that there are some changes and countermeasures that once in place will nullify their effect by hundreds of thousands of millions – not just one at a time. And a lot of unintended consequences, human error and just plain bad luck that could take a lot of nodes offline.

If you are a foreign power investing efforts into a widely dispersed network of potential disruptive code, you’d probably like to test it. That would increase your chances of detection.

All told, the threat of cyberwar – and the need for immediate action might need to be taken with a few grains of salt.

Cyberwar Skeptic

by Andrew McCaskey
Wednesday, 08 April 2009 22:40

It's OverStated, for Effect

I love a good political / technical conspiracy as much as anyone, but I have the sneaking feeling that the combined stories of power and utility grid hacking released within a day or two from the Wall Street Journal, Wired, multiple newspapers and the military are a ramp up for some budget discussions next week, rather than a new revelation. Vulnerabilities have always existed, as have the desire of enemies to exploit those openings to their own ends.

The "Sleeper Cell" attack vector has been an entertaining staple of fiction for at least fifty years. Only in this scenario, it is some bit of obscure code planted in a vulnerable piece of switchgear, routing, or load-shedding equipment awaiting the call of the evil genius in time of war or crisis or blackmail.

Countermeasures are, of course, not discussed. Nor should they be. However, I'd like to think that the problem is not as concentrated and evil as the popular press (driving a political agenda) might lead you to believe. It's much like the discussion of encryption: Statements like " There is less than one chance in 10 e24 of the code being broken" leads you to the brute force approach that takes one solution, tries it , fails ,discards and then concludes only 10e24 minus one to go. In practice, cracking such a code depends upon algortihms that eliminate millions of combinations at a time, not one at a time.

I expect that if millions of remote reading electrical meters are affected that there are some changes and countermeasures that once in place will nullify their effect by hundreds of thousands of millions - not just one at a time. And a lot of unintended consequences, human error and just plain bad luck that could take a lot of nodes offline.

If you are a foreign power investing efforts into a widely dispersed network of potential disruptive code, you'd probably like to test it. That would increase your chances of detection.

All told, the threat of cyberwar - and the need for immediate action might need to be taken with a few grains of salt.

Just Because You Can

by Andrew McCaskey
Just Because You Can, Does Not Mean You Should

The App for the Android G1 phone is, supposedly, dead simple to operate. You walk into a store, photograph a DVD, and by the time you make it home, the movie is waiting for you in your torrent client. You can with Torrent Droid. You might note that you did not have to slip the stolen DVD into your coat pocket, or face similar embarrassment. In fact, you and your buddies could probably create enough of a diversion that taking the picture with your Android phone might not even be noticed.

That’s the sort of behavior that gives hackers a bad name. Just because you can, does not mean that you should.

Worse than that, it was instigated by an Android-orientated website Androidandme launched ‘Android Bounty’, a new initiative which has led to the creation of the nice little torrent app.
. “Users submit ideas which can be voted up by others who pledge money to the bounty. The first developer who delivers a working application is rewarded with the bounty.”

The software would use the G1 cellphone’s inbuilt camera to scan a retail DVD UPC barcode, and use the capture to identify the official details of the product from a database. The developer got a grand total of $90 for his trouble, props from his friends and caused hundreds or thousands of honest people untold amounts of grief for years to come.

How long will it be before television towers disappear ? Those 1200ft sticks with transmitting antennas on top – so prevalent throughout the Midwest where broadcasters lacked convenient mountaintops – may be the antlers an endangered breed.

One news item today cites the success of the Hulu live stream of the Presidential debates. Another item points out that there is still lots and lots of backbone bandwidth – with the price still headed downward. All point towards a change in the skyline of much of the country. As more and more viewers are able to get their content from IP based television (IPTV) the over the air delivery will become a smaller and smaller piece of the business model for local affiliates. Just as the local affiliates become a smaller and smaller piece of the business model for the content creators at the network level.

Broadcast engineers have commented that their entire tower and antenna could collapse and only 20% of their viewers would notice. The rest of the audience receives their content from cable or satellite. IPTV is rapidly moving towards cutting that number even smaller.

The success of Hulu – the combined result of NBC Universal and Fox that brings more or less current television plus selected movies to the PC screen- has been a bit of a surprise. After all, the Joost launch, the series of Beta invites that were slowly doled out, and overall level of hype certainly overshadowed the late-to-the-party Hulu.

But along the way, viewers had been conditioned by Tivo to tolerate late episodes (say by a day or two) in exchange for on-demand control to fit their lifestyle and preferences. And they quickly adapted to the ability to skip commercials- viewing the “hour long” show in about forty minutes. And Hulu did a very good job with the User Interface (running in the browswer instead of a proprietary download like Joost).

It’s moving very quickly. And the live streaming capability is right on the edge of being able to cut that local affiliate out.

As far as the disappearing towers, it won’t be a David Copperfield illusion. They really will be gone, an all but extinct breed. The species will be ok, though. The 1200 ft towers just got replaced by at least six 200ft Cellular towers. Antenna manufacturers have a secure future.

Local affiliates of nationwide networks? Probably something else.

Twitter’s Second Wave

by Andrew McCaskey
The Ars Technica article on “Twitter- Far More than what I had for lunch today” introduces the notion that Twitter is getting close to Crossing the Chasm from a marketing standpoint.

The classic early adopters and pioneers are just about finished popularizing the service, developing great tools such as Summize (now search.twitter.com ) Twitterific, Tweetdeck and others, and it’s starting to move into the Early Majority.

The adoption of the service by a Police Department, allowing communications via a variety of ways (web, SMS, iPhone App, etc) on traffic, crime watch, and announcements is one indication.

Another is the tweeting of job search info – and, as the service improves in the ability to scale, forestalling the Fail Whale – that means that even more applications will emerge. Not applications in the sense of client programs, but real world applications that make life a little easier, communications a little smoother, or bring together those who need to have one part of ther day that just works.

And at 140 characters, it’s introducing some brevity and simplicity as well.

That’s good.

Twitter's Second Wave

by Andrew McCaskey
The Ars Technica article on "Twitter- Far More than what I had for lunch today" introduces the notion that Twitter is getting close to Crossing the Chasm from a marketing standpoint.

The classic early adopters and pioneers are just about finished popularizing the service, developing great tools such as Summize (now search.twitter.com ) Twitterific, Tweetdeck and others, and it's starting to move into the Early Majority.

The adoption of the service by a Police Department, allowing communications via a variety of ways (web, SMS, iPhone App, etc) on traffic, crime watch, and announcements is one indication.

Another is the tweeting of job search info - and, as the service improves in the ability to scale, forestalling the Fail Whale - that means that even more applications will emerge. Not applications in the sense of client programs, but real world applications that make life a little easier, communications a little smoother, or bring together those who need to have one part of ther day that just works.

And at 140 characters, it's introducing some brevity and simplicity as well.

That's good.

What’s Up With Sprint in Las Vegas ?

by Andrew McCaskey
Getting ready for the big New Media Expo – I’ve checked into the Hilton with great hopes to avoid the $13.99 per day internet charge by firing up the EVDO card from Sprint.

Well, it’s not going well. It shows both EVDO and 1rxtt but will not connect, and widely varying signal levels.

At least the Airport Express lets me create a secure hotspot so that I can run several devices without pulling cables or going on and off the network, resulting in multiple connect charges.

Lots of Twitter activity – and so I am trying to get the show up promptly and not get into the three hours later time warp, at least until tomorrow night.

That one is going to be the push-up, so the show may be erratically posted for air time Friday morning.

Premature Burial for eMail

by Andrew McCaskey
The halfway serious way to sell more newspapers or build readership is to advance an idea that is halfway serious.

The Chicago Tribune Redeye blog put forth the idea that the simultaneous outage of Gmail and MobileMe push service for conventional email on Monday afternoon was something of note. And solicited – via a Tweet – the opinions of about 400 who were following.

The 400 reacted with a general ‘ho-hum’ implying that they had the communications channel that they needed/wanted/used – namely Twitter – and that they were in fact only mildly interested in the outage otherwise.

Like many parents who are amazed that their teenagers don’t actually make phone calls – but prefer to text their friends – this is bound to make some news. Or at least generate a few comments.

Well, here’s mine: I don’t think Twitter is going to come close to the utility of searchable GMail records. It is a great substitute for IM, it’s fun to keep in touch, and it’s a breath of fresh air for communications. But for at least the next two or three decades – email (or the long tail of email) is going to be the communications medium.

Let’s just hope Gmail keeps evolving along with it.

Will It Scale ? Let’s Hope Not

by Andrew McCaskey
The video today concerns the full attack that was conducted against Estonia – a bit of public awareness on the scope and severity of botnet attack on a small but well defended country.

The early hours of the attack concentrated upon newspapers, banks, radio and television sites and other critical infrastructure. Sound like a familiar strategy ? The quick reaction of the Estonians to purposely disconnect their networks from the outside world preserved their systems, and only through the cooperation of sys admins around the world was the attacking botnet neutralized one IP block at a time.

The question raised by the video is not will the attack scale – but will it scale quickly enough to be an offensive weapon against a determined defender. Conversely, if the defender is not payng attention the scale might not be nearly as important.

It is hard to imagine the effect that a well timed cyber attack, in combination with perhaps 40 cities under attack by two man teams operating along the lines of the DC mobile snipers in the days immediately after 9/11.

Hard to realize the damage that could be caused by less than 100 bad guys and say $100Million to hire a botnet for a weekend. That’s even more to be concerned about than $7 a gallon gasoline.

Funny, I’ve never heard this in any of the debates. Takes too long to tell the story.

Will It Scale ? Let's Hope Not

by Andrew McCaskey
The video today concerns the full attack that was conducted against Estonia - a bit of public awareness on the scope and severity of botnet attack on a small but well defended country.

The question raised by the video is not will the attack scale - but will it scale quickly enough to be an offensive weapon against a determined defender.

That's even more to be concerned about than $7 a gallon gasoline.

Funny, I've never heard this in any of the debates. Takes too long to tell the story.

False Alarm in CyberWar

by Andrew McCaskey
I’m firmly on the side of the Air Force – and given their mission in protecting the assets of the country, I’m glad to see that they are aggressively preparing for a conflict in cyberspace that never comes.

I’m no fan of botnets and practices that destroy the openness and trust on the net. But, if there are those with capability and motivation to confront the US in this sphere, then there is an obligation to prepare in this dimension as well.

It’s a lot better to have it out in the open, for debate and political oversight than to have it buried in some Black Intelligence program. The effect is the same, and some degree of transparency is an obligation to US citizens.

There sure has not been enough of that lately.

Business Models and Timing – Hulu vs Joost

by Andrew McCaskey
I am not sure that I agree with all of the predictions that the (New) Industry Standard site option column writes but I think that they are on to at least one valid prediction: Hulu is going to turn out to be the winner in the sanctioned video distribution model, not Joost.

Based on personal experience, the browser based client is going to win every time over the custom download/sign-in account. While it may be that the content with cross over offerings such as The Riches, The Office and so forth hit my personal taste more accurately than the Joost content, the convenience of the browser based system is just too handy. Especially since I move from box to box to laptop throughout the day – and the last thing that I want to have to be concerned about is how patched my video access program seems to be.
