Smart iPhone Developer Targets

by Andrew McCaskey
Win Prizes or Sell Apps ?

An advertising director I once knew was very skeptical of Award Winning Advertising campaigns. He maintained that Awards were nice, but they did not sell product. In the short term, iPhone developers are facing the same choice.

Apple iPhone 3GS—a fast smartphone with twice the processor speed and double the memory . But the sweet spot right now is not that $199 phone, it’s the fact that the regular 3G version will remain on sale, with the priced dropped to less than $100. – the $99 iPhone.

The success of the iPhone is due in no small measure to the army of developers that are creating apps while Apple handles the commmercial engine, credit and collections. A great app, especially a game can literally print money for a developer.

At $100, the3Gt iPhone hits a new level of consumer. As Popular Mechanics observed, “Americans have time and again demonstrated that they look for value over horsepower in personal electronics”. Netbooks have slow processors and minimal storage. The Wii stomped the far more powerful and more expensive PlayStation 3. Simply because they are affordable.

Instead of focusing on elaborate apps for the new phone, a smart developer is going where the money is going to be, at least in the short term. {sharethis}
