500Mb/sec on Copper Won’t Help
by Andrew McCaskey
500Mbps over Copper Wiring
The tech world is buzzing over the latest from Ericsson – a half mile range over twisted pair copper at 500Mb/sec is a tremendous accomplishment. It’s a shame that it’s not of much value in the market that needs it the most. If only regulators in the US read the press releases properly.
First of all, the fine print notes that there are six channels run in parallel – that makes the cabling just a bit more demanding, as I understand that the standard practice at least until the 1990s’s was to have two pair in the residential telco drop. A brief run-up in the late 90′s for home office fax machines, then a precipitous drop as wireless and VoIP caused normal wired service to implode.
The Ericsson announcement also ties in directly to the recent articles that explained that the method of deployment is very different in various countries around the world. Where high density permits short cable runs, average speeds are going to be higher. The mode of operation is to run fiber to the basement of buildings, and then run DSL over copper up the shafts to the apartments in the building.
Within Ericssion’s primary market, it’s big news. For the rest of us .. not so much.
Sorry Charlie – I am afraid it’s just a science project.
