    Five Years of the PodFather

    A milestone, of sorts – the fifth anniversary of the Adam Curry Podcast, ‘The Daily Source Code’. Wired magazine informs that Dave Winer Morning Coffee Notes preceeded by one day, but that the MTV personality was the celebrity voice that launched podcasting.

    It is still an amazing set of techical tools for those of us who grew up in or around commercial radio and television broadcasting. In the late 90′s I had streaming content through SportWings Radio hosted at Live365 – on Shoutcast. RSS technology first came on my radar at Gnomedex 2003 and clicked during conversations October 1-2 of that year. By October 12, SlashdotReview podcast was on the air – and has been since that time.

    We all owe a debt to Dave Winer for the underlying technology and to pioneers like KenRadio, Rob Greenlee and Doug Kaye who were in the space with streaming technologies years before.

      Good Enough for Most

      NetBooks Are the First Step

      The PC World blog imagines a report from the future looking back to the Great Recession of ’09, and notes that is the first time that the idea of “Good Enough” computing infiltrated the conciousness. And that spelled the beginning of the end for the Mighty Microsoft. The camel’s nose in the tent of Open Source had begun years before. But Good Enough computing became possible because even the cheapest chips have all the power most people need nowadays. With applications moving into the cloud, the browser became the most important application. And with good connectivity and the keyboard and screen, even the most modest machine was good enough.

      All because Good Enough, and cheap is all the computer you need.

      Now smartphones, that’s a different story. You wont pay for power, but you will pay for mobility, connectivity, and media choice .

        Future Shock Win 7 Style

        When XP Goes Home for Good, Expect Some Pain

        In May of this year, Windows XP will no longer be supported by Microsoft. Then, the release candidate for Win7 will be downloaded by millions of people and the transition will begin, leapfrogging the ill-conceived Visa OS. Except for the skilled, it is going to be one tremendous slap around for most of the country. Those who were learning, and those who thought that they knew are going to be in for one big setback. Their newly acquired and hard earned computer skills will be once again. obsolete.

        Computer literacy has, in the main, been explained in terms of ability to work within the Microsoft product family. Right now, there are hundreds of thousands in job-retraining programs and in remedial instruction to give basic computer skills. Once those machines begin to flow throughout the system, a lot of marginally skilled workers who are just now being able to start up a browser and fill out their Unemployment claim online are going to feel left out once again.

        The question is how long it will take the XP machines to work out of the inventory, and how long it will take the vast majority of the population to make the shift to a similar but different Operating System. Unless there is a compelling reason to change machines, XP is going to be around for a long, long time – supported or not. Those hardest hit in this economy are not going to be replacing things any time soon. And the idea of a retrofit to push Win7 onto obsolete hardware is going to be an exercise in frustration.

        We’ll see if the forced conversion works this time. or if there is another repeat of the Vista push. Vista deserved an quick exit. Windows 7 may not, because of the Reset Recession, even get to go on stage until the Reset is completed.

          Getting Over the Seattle Post Intelligencer

          Stronger Than Ever – After the Reset

          The announcement that the Seattle Post-Intelligencer will cease publication on paper is being lamented far and wide. I suspect that we will get over it, quickly. The “paper” will continue to publish, online. And, let us hope there will be some archival hard copies burned off for the King Country Courthouse records each day. The real paper will outlive the need for publishing on cellulose.

          As much as we like to lament the passing of newspapers throughout the country, Clay Christensen’s Innovator’s Dilemma again offers an explaination, of sorts. The disruptive technology (blogs ,user generated content and internet based delivery in this case) initially delivers an inferior product. The established technology offers a few enhancements which do little but increase their costs, and the upstart begins to encroach with more and more application.

          Newspapers or journalists / journalism is needed as much or more in the coming years than in the past. In fact, finding a voice and finding an audience will perhaps become easier in the new delivery system than in the old.

          What we are lamenting is the passing of a business model, and fearing what comes next. After all the advertiser supported one has worked for a few hundred years and we are awfully comfortable with it. Besides, the home of the Kindle is just on the other side of the I-5 Freeway.

As much as we like to lament the passing of newspapers throughout the country, Clay Christensen's Innovator's Dilemma again offers an explaination, of sorts. The disruptive technology (blogs ,user generated content and internet based delivery in this case) initially delivers an inferior product. The established technology offers a few enhancements which do little but increase their costs, and the upstart begins to encroach with more and more application. Newspapers or journalists / journalism is needed as much or more in the coming years than in the past. In fact, finding a voice and finding an audience will perhaps become easier in the new delivery system than in the old. What we are lamenting is the passing of a business model, and fearing what comes next. After all the advertiser supported one has worked for a few hundred years and we are awfully comfortable with it. Besides, the home of the Kindle is just on the other side of the I-5 Freeway.             Grand Central Reborn

            As Google Voice

            The new implementation of GRand Central, now called Google voice is going to have some substantial impact of scores of companies. Tom Peters notably said, this is not a recession, it is a reset. If you happen to be a company that sells voice mail transcription or conferencing calling services – I am afraid your reset has arrived.

            The most subtle effects will be training of the Google Voice system, conducted by you, the user.

            The video today is a detail of the voicemail transcription service, that takes any voicemail that comes into your system and converts it to text – to be sent as an email or forwarded via SMS. You can anticipate that it won’t be 100% accurate. I’ll bet that Google’s algorithm includes observing what corrections you happen to make before you do some quick corrections and send it along to someone else in your address book.

            Not only are you an unwilling stockholder in various banks, automobile and insurance companies – you are now an un-official part time Google employee, helping refine their speech to text algorithm, clarifying context, and removing problems with background noise, regionalisms, and accents. I guess I should say worker or volunteer. Employees get paid.

              HP Magical Giveaway

              The HP Magic Giveaway is the event of this Christmas Season.

              Thanks to the generosity of Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, and Corel, for the first time I am able to introduce one of the most meaningful events of the year.

              You may have recalled the 31 Days of the Dragon promotion earlier this year. Through the efforts of Buzz Corps, Inc, HP and Microsoft have decided to expand from 31 to 50 sites around the world – including bloggers and podcasters and arrange that each of the sites offer a single prize to one listener or reader.

              They have donated a package of hardware and software valued at over $6000 to each of the fifty blog or podcast sites. The only restriction is that the prize go to a single winner, and that the winner “pay it forward” to other deserving people or organizations in their local community.

              There are five computers in the package – and a long list of software, accessories that is found at the site.

                We Will See if It Rules

                What’s the balance between content value and production values ? What’s the balance between general tech, regulatory, and business news and specialized deep dive content ? We are about to find out. Starting this week, SDRNews is rolling the dice on a major expansion to live coverage of specialized content at the Content Management Association CMSExpo in Denver, CO. John Coonen is the Executive Director of CMSA, and founder of the Expo.

                We have picked either the absolute best or the absolute worst time to invest in this venture. We are adding Associate Producers with different styles, on air personality and perspectives for the event. Why make the leap, and why now ?

                From a podcaster standpoint, as with any media business, it is a struggle to keep things fresh. Sometimes it is small changes or tweaks, and other times – it is a time for change. The CMS Expo is a small show – but it fills a specific need at a time when web content developers are looking for unique services for clients, and when companies are looking for ways to reduce their costs and increase their effectiveness.

                I am enough of a geek that I am really anxious to see how the combination of Twitter, Seesmic, webcams, Camtwist and other consumer grade tools can address content collection in a conference setting.

                But – the real test will be on how the audience reacts to this trial. IF it meets your needs or interests, tell us so – and tell your friends. If we are moving off base – let me know that as well.

                  Avoiding Mistakes in 2009

                  The Biggest Mistake: Not Making One

                  For several months, there has been talk about the advantages that entrepreneurs have at this moment. And, if they can keep the television turned off and remove the negative stream of newsworthy but backward focused news of layoffs, closures and troubles, they might have a good chance.

                  Layoffs are injecting a steady stream of talent into the marketplace. The combination of a good idea, a few skilled coders, a coffee shop wtih good wifi will insure that the seeds have been planted for the recovery. But, as Paul Graham points out, a startup has to act like a bumbling toddler – slamming into things, falling down and getting back up.

                  That means that the larger the organization, the more successful it has been in the past, the higher the probability that it will begin to hire others from large companies, each with their own set of checks and policies. The biggest mistake that a startup company can make is to bring that mindset into the startup. They can still be successful with close teamwork, clear priorities and good execution.

                      I rely upon Pukka to do the posting of show note links for each episode – but there is something on the blink that is not permitting Pukka and Del.icio.us to do their thing for this episode.

                          More Insight on DNS Problems

                          More investigation with GoDaddy on the source of the intermittent DNS failures to find the podcast or the site from certain Cox, AT&T and SBC Global sites.

                          Signs now are pointing to Level3 and ABOVE.NET as possible culprits and a mistaken blacklist entry that is blocking the IP address . Packets that take other routes go through fine -and this is explaining some of the intermittent nature of the problems.

                          The cure may be a reprovision and change of the IP, allowing a DNS repopulation to flush things out and just reset all.

                          It may happen this weekend.
