Blu-ray on Track but Stalled

by Andrew McCaskey

No Surprise: Still more HD-DVD players

A few months ago, we reported the words of a senior Samsung executive that “Blu-ray will be gone in five years”. There are more HD-DVD players than Blu-ray players in American homes (thanks in no small measure to Walmart’s blowout of Toshiba boxes at prices less than $200 during the final days of the epic battle, now 18 months settled.

The real story is that neither the Blu-Ray camp or Toshiba will turn out to be the winners. Anemic sales of Blu-ray disks are as much due to the pricing policies and the recession as to the rapid growth of downloadable content and streamed content, about to sweep away any form of physical distribution. It may be that Toshiba will have the last laugh – licking their wounds but moving on to more profitable ventures, as Sony and the rest try to move premium priced content wrappers of atoms, when bits are so much lighter. And, with the right licensing model, ever so more profitable.

Flash Tightens the Noose

by Andrew McCaskey
In a Flash, the Noose Tightens PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andrew McCaskey
Monday, 20 April 2009 20:17

Tightening the Noose

Cable operators had to keep a straight face while their pulse involuntarily quickened at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention when Adobe announced the extension of Flash to the television screen, working with both content providers and display manufacturers. They are one step closer to being chopped out of the distribution path, and facing the destruction of their business model.

Flash is used for online video streaming by the likes of Hulu and YouTube. If set top boxes begin to arrive to market late this year and prototype units with built in Flash interface hit CES in 2010, a veritable tipping point is upon us in the next 18 months.

Blu-ray players at $99 (with an industry that insists on a premium for the media) are potentially non starters. The popularity of YouTube and Hulu are about to sweep them away as a delivery vehicle. Removing the media PC or Apple TV from the path (in the mind of the average consumer) and placing Flash video entirely within the realm of the remote control is the last step in removing all that pesky broadcast industry delivery from the middle of the equation.

This brings a number of things into focus: Bandwidth caps are a last ditch attempt to maintain control while the cable industry figures out how to keep their business model intact, or transition on the strength of their virtual monopoly position in most of the country. Google’s big bet on the currently money-losing YouTube could be vindicated bigtime when they become the preferred provider, with a trained audience of millions bypassing the browser and going directly to the flat panel on the wall.

As far as broadcasters, and cable distributors of television: Prepare to be dis-intermediated. The noose just tightened, ever so slightly

Flash Tightens the Noose

by Andrew McCaskey
In a Flash, the Noose Tightens PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andrew McCaskey

Google's big bet on the currently money-losing YouTube could be vindicated bigtime when they become the preferred provider, with a trained audience of millions bypassing the browser and going directly to the flat panel on the wall.

As far as broadcasters, and cable distributors of television: Prepare to be dis-intermediated. The noose just tightened, ever so slightly

Writing on the Wall

by Andrew McCaskey
The Writing is On the Wall.

The Tivo-Netflix cross promotion streaming agreement is one more indicator of how quickly the movie delivery landscape is changing. The existing Amazon agreements that began with Unbox complemented the SD quality streaming on demand that Netflix provides with the Roku box.

The fine print on the Netflix-Tivo agreement is that since it is HD content, it’s valid only for the Series 3 Tivo, not the far more prevalent network enabled Series II. But, regardless of the details, it is one more step forward in the delivery of content by download that is legitimate, timely and affordable.

The big loser in all this is Blu-Ray. As several have noted, most recently ZDNet – the window is closing, and closing fast. While Apple TV continues to limp along hampered by a lack of selection and studio dis-agreemnts, the fact remains that more and more consumers are getting a taste of the instant gratification of the Netflix Instant Queue and recognizing that for most content and for one time viewing, streamed solutions are a good match.

The victory over HD-DVD by the Sony-led Blu-Ray camp is the sort of multiyear campaign that does not work well at internet speeds. The market moves too fast for a hardware based multiyear invest and harvest strategy.

No Wonder We’re Nervous

by Andrew McCaskey
Often a day’s news stories link together in unexpected ways.

It’s hard to not remind ourselves that the titanic battle between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray was only decided in January of this year. That makes the Samsung Consumer Electronics’ executive comments that Blu-Ray will be “gone in five years” even more startling.

But it is a reminder that product and business model windows are narrowing even more, and the multi-billion dollar bets made on HD disk distribution are going to have even less time to provide a return than their respective companies imagined when the contest began.

The move to the next level that began with Cloud Apps of various kinds, now expressed in the Chrome browser begins to cap the desktop app and even the desktop OS age.

Parallel stories about Twitter keep running almost every day, along with today’s item about CNN’s embrace of Twitter and iReport.

The one I really like is the one about the dinosaurs actually being bitten to death by small insects.

Maybe 140 characters at a time ?

Years Away from Market Dominance

by Andrew McCaskey

I guess it is sour grapes, (watching my Upsampling DVD player, formerly known as an HD-DVD player gather dust) but I have to take some small pleasure in the the lack of traction and lackluster sales of Blu-Ray to date.

As Mary Chapin Carpenter says, “The Numbers Never Lie”, and here are some of them: Including Playstation 3, there are about 3 million Blu-Ray capable players in the US. Stand alone player prices hover around $300. For $50, a consumer can get a DVD player, as have roughly 100 million consumers.

Even with a price drop by half for the Christmas season, it’s going to be hard to see how many consumers are going to make Blu-Ray a must have item this season. And, as alternatives such as VuDu and the Netflix box come on line, family entertainment expenditures are not going to be the highest priority, once you get past the early adopters.

I suspect that we already have. CES is going to be interesting this year, trying to find some excitement.

31 Days of Dragon – drawing to a close – but still chances to win this week.

As Mary Chapin Carpenter says, "The Numbers Never Lie", and here are some of them: Including Playstation 3, there are about 3 million Blu-Ray capable players in the US. Stand alone player prices hover around $300. For $50, a consumer can get a DVD player, as have roughly 100 million consumers.

Even with a price drop by half for the Christmas season, it's going to be hard to see how many consumers are going to make Blu-Ray a must have item this season. And, as alternatives such as VuDu and the Netflix box come on line, family entertainment expenditures are not going to be the highest priority, once you get past the early adopters.

I suspect that we already have. CES is going to be interesting this year, trying to find some excitement.

Just a Fan of Hank

by Andrew McCaskey
I have to confess that I have never been able to sit through an entire episode of “King of the Hill”. Just too realistic, I guess.

But, you have to admire the inspiration that it provided to the fellow who allegedly scammed over $50,000 from E-Trade, Schwab and others by creating accounts and then pocketing the two to 99 cents that got deposited randomly to the bank account as a verification of the transfer for the account.

It seems that that fellow was a fan of “King of the Hill” and populated his automated script with charater names from the series.

And that was what the Secret Service found just a little bit suspicious when the same names turned up on thousands of accounts, all pointing back to a single IP address.

With luck, he’ll get a cell that has cable TV with “King of the Hill” reruns.

=================

Shipped the HP Dragon HSX system and software to the winner of our contest – John Kemp in Ohio. There are still other contests with chances to win.

Just a Fan of Hank

by Andrew McCaskey
I have to confess that I have never been able to sit through an entire episode of "King of the Hill".

It seems that that fellow was a fan of "King of the Hill" and populated his automated script with charater names from the series.

And that was what the Secret Service found just a little bit suspicious when the same names turned up on thousands of accounts, all pointing back to a single IP address.

With luck, he'll get a cell that has cable TV with "King of the Hill" reruns.

Blu-Ray: Not So Fast

by Andrew McCaskey
New York Times and others are starting to raise some interesting questions regarding not only the future of downloaded content, but the future of the Blu-Ray format.

It’s strange to have this sort of discussion just a few weeks after the victory of Blu-Ray in the HD delivery marketplace contest, but you may want to realize that there is a precedent in all this: The LaserDisk.

It never acheived more than 2% of the households in the US, ending up as a high end format for early adopters and videophiles, while the bulk of the market stayed on the VHS bandwagon. In a chicken and egg scenario, titles were comparatively few and the physical delivery, inventory and stocking remained challenging.

Fast forward and consider that the ubiquitous DVD plays on devices as lowly as the Walmart doorbuster specials at the $30 price point. Consider also the nearly universal market acceptance and the fact that many if not most consumers ( especially if they have a unscaling player) cannot tell the difference between DVD and HD content.

Blu-Ray has about five years to blow out these units approaching the $30 pricepoint, and bye the way also convert the back catalog of maybe 10,000 movies currently on DVD and make sure those new releases are there as well.

From the company that tried for five years to push the market into proprietary memory sticks in the chewing gum format, there’s not much chance of that.

And Verizon is laying fiber while Comcast awaits DOCSIS 3.0 with 100Mb/sec downloads.

Minor Changes

by Andrew McCaskey
In response to some listener requests – today marks the first day of a change in numbering scheme on episodes.

The SDR numbering scheme on episodes (SDRyear-month-date) is being changed from the actual production date – when I am recording the material – to the intended air date, which is normally the following morning Eastern US Time (GMT -5).

The first episode of March seemed like a good time to make the change, so that I can remember when it happened. That will mean that this program episode, which should hit the servers and RSS feed sometime Sunday night March 2nd for the morning commute on Monday March 3 in most parts of the world will be dated for that day, rather than the night that it is prepared.

That way, the Monday – Friday schedule will track with the calendar days M-F.

I imagine that on the ordered list of issues you are tracking by importance today, this is going to require a lot of zeros. And a leading decimal.

Thanks !

Daylight Savings Time (Again)

by Andrew McCaskey
This is the sort of story that probably appeals only to midwesteners – but finally there is a formal study that puts to death the claim – since Benjamin Franklin – that Daylight Savings time saves energy.

Indiana spent the last forth years in contrarian glory remaining on Standard Time year-round along with Arizona and Hawaii. Make that most in Indiana, with counties near Cincinatti and Chicago changing with their Metro area.

That key finding provided up to date comparison data used in the finding, when Indiana went to Daylight time two years ago. The motivation was economic development, not energy.

Having lived in the state for 20 years but working for California companies I was very glad to have uniform and consistent time.

At least I did not think we were saving either money or daylight.
