Crunchpad, We Hardly Knew Ye
by Andrew McCaskey
It’s a Loss for Everyone
The announcement by Michael Arrington that the CrunchPad project was killed a few days before its scheduled launch due to infighting in the production and design teams is a loss to the community. And even though it’s a different game played at those levels, it’s a shame that the work that was put into the project over the past eighteen months won’t benefit anyone but the lawyers that are gearing up on both sides.
When the Apple Tablet finally gets here – when Chrome OS is finally released on the carefully controlled hardware – when the Dells and HP’s and others begin to release their versions of the pad, it will be a shame that there weren’t a few hundred thousand Crunchpads out in the wild to provide a balance. With just enough capability and personality to make things interesting, a Crunchpad would have been the version 1.0 of a product class that is going to become an important part of our lives going forward. And by aborting the project, Crunchpad and it’s partners (who, incidentally are portrayed in such a negative light that it’ s going to be interesting to hear the other side of the story) deprived all of us of a test bed that would have made the next round of products a lot better.
When all the pieces get swept up and the egos satisfied on both sides of the globe – maybe we will be able to get a special from Tiger Direct or find them advertised in the next SkyMall shopper. Then we can take note of opportunities missed, and turn the page.
