Perils of Careless Redaction

by Andrew McCaskey
Heroes, Not Villains

There was all sorts of uproar in the mainstream media concerning the publishing of the TSA procedures manual, with redaction removed. It was as if a great hacker-based scandal had erupted, pushing the security of the US air transport system closer to the brink, just at the time when millions were contemplating their Christmas season travels. Not only was it dramatic, it was the sort of fear-mongering that was sure to set the airwaves of telephone call in urgency in motion.

The facts of the matter seem to point to a clumsy request for quotation that was put in place by the TSA, with the material put forth as an example of procedures that prospective bidders would have to comply with. The TSA itself “redacted” the more sensitive information by turning the text background black around the sensitive areas. It’s just the sort of technique that might be effective in say, preventing a fifth grade class from seeing the answers in a “fill in the blank” quiz, but giving them some idea of what the test might look like.

The various al-Quaeda tech teams around the world probably had more than a few chuckles. Note that by the time that the students were in the seventh or eighth grade, the redaction would be worthless.

So, if the bad guys have the information anyway, why not expose some incompetence in the agency procedures that permitted the incident to happen in the first place ? Embarrassing, yes – but the hackers did not tell any bad guys what they didn’t already know. {sharethis}

End of Google Wave: The Eternal Conference Call

by Andrew McCaskey
That Will Finish Off Google Wave

Nickolas Carr noted the ebb and flow of business communications over the past thirty five or forty years, and sets up the nightmare vision that could finish off Google Wave before the seond round of invites hits the streets.

One of the advantages of email, when first introduced was the fact that you had much of the immediacy of the telephone but allowed a few minutes to compose the thoughts before the response got sent out. By destroying the synchronous nature of query / response by phone, but still taking advantage of the electronic medium the best of both worlds seemed at hand.

It was still attractive, even if the CC and Reply to all allowed duplication with almost no effort. That minimal duplication cost and the ability to substitute activity for thought gave rise to spammers – in the public sense, and the far more insidious internal corporate spam that copied everyone on trivia, and set off additional spasms of traffic asking to be taken off the list. Which worked well until the next rising tide of traffic as a result of not being “read into” a situation.

Nickolas notes that Google Wave is nothing but the worst of both worlds: The interruptive immediacy of the telephone, the party-line noise of multiple chattering updates, and the quick to observe notes and phrasing as the words are being typed in. A Brave New World of Corporate communications, indeed.

That minimal duplication cost and the ability to substitute activity for thought gave rise to spammers - in the public sense, and the far more insidious internal corporate spam that copied everyone on trivia, and set off additional spasms of traffic asking to be taken off the list. Which worked well until the next rising tide of traffic as a result of not being "read into" a situation.

Nickolas notes that Google Wave is nothing but the worst of both worlds: The interruptive immediacy of the telephone, the party-line noise of multiple chattering updates, and the quick to observe notes and phrasing as the words are being typed in. A Brave New World of Corporate communications, indeed.

Murdoch and Reuters

by Andrew McCaskey
Which Approach Will Win ?

Rupert Murdoch has issued the ultimatum to Amazon: They are our customers, not yours – and we want their names. The ball is now in the Jeff Bezos court, and of all the decisions that he has made this year, it’s going to be one of the most important. If Bezos caves, and delivers up the Kindle subscriber list to the Wall Street Journal, the blogosphere is going to erupt in a way that will make the recent 1984 flap look tame. Not to mention the EFF and probably a half dozen other legal challenges. Amazon will surely survive, but the Kindle probably won’t.

The more interesting contest is between the massive Newscorp, including Fox News and the decision to place everything behind a paywall, and the desire by the Associated Press to maintain their margins by doing the same. Reuters CEO has taken the high road:

. . .Ahearn wrote a piece on a Reuters blog (Via SIA), calling for publishers, bloggers, aggregators, search engines and ad networks to get together and figure out something that works for everyone. “I believe in the link economy. Please feel free to link to our stories — it adds value to all producers of content. I believe you should play fair and encourage your readers to read-around to what others are producing if you use it and find it interesting.

I don’t believe you could or should charge others for simply linking to your content. Appropriate excerpting and referencing are not only acceptable, but encouraged. ”

Guess which one is going to win. Hint: It’s not the one that’s getting thinner every week.

Presentations at the Next Level

by Andrew McCaskey
Introducing Prezi

You Tube Today is a company called Prezi. If you were monitoring the twitterstream from @axmc earlier this week you already know about this presentation tool that eliminates slides, involves the audience with motion, sound, content and text, and makes the life of a presenter 100% easier. The folks behind the TED conferences are major investors. There is a bulleted list mode, but it’s primary purpose seems to be to inject humor and make fun of other presenters on the program who are totally pwned when they show up with PowerPoint and you show up with this. Best of all – a free version is available if you are ok with your content appearing in their sample stream.

There is a bulleted list mode, but it's primary purpose seems to be to inject humor and make fun of other presenters on the program who are totally pwned when they show up with PowerPoint and you show up with this. Best of all - a free version is available if you are ok with your content appearing in their sample stream.

Will It Go to Eleven ?

by Andrew McCaskey
Listener Request: More Volume

Michael P writes: “Andy-
First, let me thank you for your efforts in the ongoing production of SDRNews. As a long-time listener (back when you used to include music) and really enjoy listening to your podcast.

I have noticed lately, however, that the audio level of the recording is a bit low. I can understand that being the case with your travel studio as that probably requires less-than-ideal conditions, but with your home studio, I often have to turn up my stereo or headphones which results in me having to quickly turn them back down when I switch to a different podcast (often Todd’s GNC) or song.

If there are technical (or personal) reasons for producing it as you do, please don’t worry, it isn’t a big deal. I just wanted to make sure you got the feedback in case you were unaware.

Take care and I look forward to tomorrow’s episode.

Here’s the reply:

Thanks for the report. I am producing now on ProTools LE using their bridge meter and trying to peak at -6dbm RMS. On the road I do not have a hardware compressor, where I do have that in the audio chain in the home studio. There are also different microphones involved that may change the sound levels. Conversely the recorder that I have been using on the road actually is running pretty close to flat-topping or clipping, while the studio is well within the linear range.

Let me change the target to -3dbm and hit the compressor a bit harder, and see if that helps the next few days.

So that’s what’s going on: Please let me know – Contact SDRNews .

e-Paper’s Military Achilles Heel

by Andrew McCaskey
Wetware Search

The excitement over the Kindle 2, the various e-paper prototypes offering extended life and flexibility have captured the minds of individual consumers, managers, and military alike. Increadible battery life / solar power, ruggedness and ability to be read in direct sunlight are all powerful positives.

One thing that better be on those devices is a very strong search. If a young soldier technician has a ruggedized Kindle with the equivalent of 1200 hard back books and references, he had better be familiar with the content and have the ability to search those documents quickly. His expectations have been set by Google, and if the embedded search is not at least that good, the information that is needed is as good as locked up, regardless of its physical manifestation.

A Kindle is no substitute for experience, knowledge, and the ability to make connections between observations, situatiions, and bits of information – no matter how elegantly those bits are stored. That’s Wetware search, in the brains of the operator. And we better not think that pushing Kindles into forward positions is going to be any kind of substitute.

e-Paper's Military Achilles Heel

by Andrew McCaskey

A Kindle is no substitute for experience, knowledge, and the ability to make connections between observations, situatiions, and bits of information - no matter how elegantly those bits are stored. That's Wetware search, in the brains of the operator. And we better not think that pushing Kindles into forward positions is going to be any kind of substitute.

Time for Lobbyist Gear Change

by Andrew McCaskey
The next ninety days are going to be some of the most closely studied days of the 21st Century. It’s going to be doubly critical, because it will set the stage for the next twenty years, probably more.
For technologists, there are three items of particular interest: Broadband infrastructure proposals, how those proposals get modified, and how the broadband infrastructure itself – principally at this stage YouTube and other new media distribution channels – is used to gather, synthesize, promote and sell those decisions.

Broadband development is proposed to get up to $6 billion in a new $550 billion package being considered by Congress.

Within two weeks Congress will consider a massive investment bill that includes an infusion of $6 billion for broadband and $650 million to get the government’s cash-strapped DTV coupon program back up and running.

The broadband plan will target high speed Internet access “so businesses in rural and other underserved areas can link up to the global economy.” And the proposal includes an additional $10 billion for science and research. There’s also $32 billion allocated for the development of renewable technologies, $31 billion to make public facilities more energy efficient, $10 billion for transit and rail construction, and $19 billion for water purification, flood control, and environmental restoration programs.

But public interest groups want some accountability strings attached. And if you thought any lobbyists were getting ready to apply for unemployment you may want to reconsider.

First of all, net neutrality is, for the moment, big on the agenda. Technically rational broadband would emphasize fiber networks – an expensive but longer term investment that has the technical capacity and capability to scale. But, the real story will be if and how these good intentions get gently shaped and structured so that incumbent copper from telcos and coax from the cable industry worm their way in as “interim alternatives” that somehow become more permanent.

If the incoming administration can hold onto the vision and execute a truly modern infrastructure investment program, that money is going to be well spent. It is all going to be a function of who gets the communications flowing. And my bet is that the experts in old media are about to get trumped by a far more nimble communications, promotion and sales job.

Femtocells – Not a Minute Too Soon

by Andrew McCaskey
It would almost be enough to convert me to a Sprint phone subscriber, if it were not for the iPhone and family connections that have us firmly tied to AT&T.

Even though we are less than a mile from cellular towers serving traffic on a major interstate highway, the cell phone service inside the house is a joke.

Of course, when you choose to live inside a Faraday Cage of aluminum siding, you can live with the consequences of your decision. And, with luck, the XM satellite can see just the right portion of the sky from a bookcase through a bedroom window on the second floor. But with bad luck, your AT&T cellphone will be just about flat unless you are at an open window facing the tower.

The Sprint Femtocell $99 box +$15 per month uplift would be just the solution – positioned in an upstairs window or attic with clear view of the cell tower, repeating inside the aluminum silo that is our home.

There have got to be millions of homes with this problem (most built in the 1960′s and 1970′s) and it may be one of the Golden Arrows (along with WiMax) that can pull Sprint’s fortunes out of the fire.

I hope so, (since I am an EVDO customer with Sprint).

And I hope AT&T gets their Femtocell act together soon.

Femtocells - Not a Minute Too Soon

by Andrew McCaskey

The Sprint Femtocell $99 box +$15 per month uplift would be just the solution - positioned in an upstairs window or attic with clear view of the cell tower, repeating inside the aluminum silo that is our home.

There have got to be millions of homes with this problem (most built in the 1960's and 1970's) and it may be one of the Golden Arrows (along with WiMax) that can pull Sprint's fortunes out of the fire.

I hope so, (since I am an EVDO customer with Sprint).

And I hope AT&T gets their Femtocell act together soon.

Sirius and XM Missing the Window

by Andrew McCaskey
My experiences the past week or so with Pandora Radio, the iPhone with 2.0 software, and the Cradlepoint PHS-300 give me an idea of where things are headed. And it’s not going to offer too much encouragement to stockholders of either XM or Sirius Radio.

For the past 700 miles or so, we have been comparing the listening experience of the Pandora/iPhone approach and the regular XM service that is our normal traveling mode.

What’s been most impressive is the ability of the iPhone (most of the time) to continue to stream audio from Pandora, even though the EDGE is the only available network.

The audio stream quality is better than XM (less compression) and the variety is, at least initially, a benefit over the XM stream. XM still wins on over all coverage and the ability to change programming channels quickly. Other than that, the use of the PHS-300 (which takes the Sprint EVDO and makes a local wifi node within the auto that the iPhone selects as a wifi signal) .

Stay tuned.

Sirius and XM Missing the Window

by Andrew McCaskey
My experiences the past week or so with Pandora Radio, the iPhone with 2.0 software, and the Cradlepoint PHS-300 give me an idea of where things are headed. And it's not going to offer too much encouragement to stockholders of either XM or Sirius Radio.

For the past 700 miles or so, we have been comparing the listening experience of the Pandora/iPhone approach and the regular XM service that is our normal traveling mode.

What's been most impressive is the ability of the iPhone (most of the time) to continue to stream audio from Pandora, even though the EDGE is the only available network.

Stay tuned.

Was it worth two days of driving for one day of PodCamp ? Absolutely.

I made the trip from the temporary summer place in VA back to the midwest, just in time for the one day event near Columbus, the first edition of PodcampOhio.
