    Verizon Waits for Google Voice

    by Andrew McCaskey
Don’t be surprised when Google gets ambushed as they attempt to roll out Google Voice. They are going up against a formidable set of foes in Verizon and AT&T and the technical flash of Google Voice is not going to hold sway for very long, once the news cycle cranks past the headlines..

It’s fashionable to imagine how wonderful the one phone number for life world will be, but most of the comments that I have seen have ignored one particular fact: For all its wealth and power, Google does not have the benefit of deep pockets plus political and lobbyist strength. And this is one area where the established telephone industry has Google beat hands down.

Google, Microsoft and other high tech companies almost got their head handed to them during the Whitespace hearings and the spectrum auctions. It would take only one slip-up or SEC investigation into accusations of the misuse of political power by Google for the telco industry to strike. You can be sure that telcos will reward their supporters and strike down their enemies when the time arrives. And you can bet that those wireless service providers who did not hold their margins or resist the slick Android/Data Plan will be noticed.

The Barbarians are not yet at the gate. But you can see how they are positioning for battle.
