Twittering Outages

It’s not going to grab the headlines – it’s not the sexiest place in technology but if you think that “power comes out of the wall – then you do something interesting with it” , you are in for a shock.
Five major incidents in the past week in which generator or UPS failures have caused data center power outages that left customers offline. A Rackspace outage in Dallas while UPS units were cited in brief outages at Equinix data centers in Sydney and Paris on Thursday and fires at Fisher Plaza in Seattle (which disrupted e-commerce Friday) and another fire in Toronto early Sunday. Google App Engine also had a lengthy outage Thursday, but it was attributed to a data store failure.
The challenge for companies is it’s only been two years or so since the world has changed as far as expectation setting and expectation management. It’s been driven by – what else – Twitter.
Good communication with stakeholders is absolutely essential during an outage, and in the age of Twitter that means good and timely communications.
