    Not Immediately a Big Deal

    by Andrew McCaskey
But Is It ? Chrome OS is a Minimal Threat

The announcement of the Google Chrome OS is spread all over the press and blogosphere. We might be interested in it, but Microsoft has nothing to fear on this count for a number of years. They still will be masters of the desktop game, due to the simple fact that they have over ninety percent of the installed base.

The reason is that adoption of Google Chrome OS is the rational thing to do – but that inertia and switching costs will keep the irrational moving forward. Most of the world has spent the past thirty years warming up to the concept of personal computing and net based communications, and now have proudly announced their “Computer literacy” skills. Even at a price point of free, a lot of people are going to be asking how much “Free” really costs and will judge the switching costs to be too high. The ecosystem of skills, applications, workplace, system administration, and interdependent vendors and users will insure – just like Windows XP that Win7 will move forward for many years.

The bigger danger to Microsoft is in the handset and mobile space. The combination of Android in the handset and ChromeOS at the netbook means that the legs are being cut away and the table’s eventual collapse is assured. It just won’t be next year.
