Good Move on Recovery RSS
by Andrew McCaskey
Bright Light
The requirement that each Federal Agency provide a realtime RSS or Atom feed of the funds dispersed under the Stimulus Bill is some substance behind the “made for TV” claims of transparency. Maybe there really is something to this.
The Governor of Maryland has a good example of this marriage of GIS, API, XML and RSS technologies in the StateStats program, and a series of Interactive maps that show distribution and allocation by county. Presumably that will get further granularity as projects get underway and contracts are pushed out to suppliers and firms. He points out that any citizen can subscribe to the feeds, and then display in mashups or analysis as needed.
The Federal program will extend that to corporate entities by DUNS number or even DUNS+ , which will provide detail to the subsidiary level within large companies. Sounds like at real attempt at true transparency that has some chance of making it through the flood of information of millions of transactions, program expenditures and items.
I will be great if, like any good battle plan, the RSS Feeds survive the first contact with the enemy.
