Assumptions and Trouble
The quick demise of the Ma.gnolia.us social bookmarking service has some lessons for both providers and consumers. The site owner came clean, with lessons learned by him and his customers. Ma.gnolia founder Larry Halff has been very forthcoming with his subscribers, and has described his frantic efforts to retrieve data that had been entered by the members of his community.
He said last week that the service’s MySQL database included nearly half a terabyte of data. Ma.gnolia was a one-man operation running on two Mac OS X servers and four Mac minis. As users, we would like to belive that established sites have lots of backup, server capacity and staff. That may not be the case.
That is one reason why our TPN Roundtable session that included discussions with the founder of CloudEngine – developers of Pogoplug – should be on the ‘must review’ list for listeners in the next few days. The only storage that you can depend upon is going to be that which you can control. We will be doing further work with Pogoplug in the weeks to come, so stay tuned.
