Hulu Shows Who is Boss
by Andrew McCaskey
Just to Show Who’s Boss
In case there was any doubt, the site Hulu.com is owned by the networks that supply content to it. It had a long run on the the chain but when it got to the end the run was over. That’s what happens when you get close to the edge of a business model.
There is no doubt that virtually every household with reduced family income is taking a long and hard look at at their cable and satellite TV expense. Eight Hundred and Twenty channels of content might impress somebody, but once you subtract out content that you don’t want at all, content that you can live without, and then time shift among that that you do want, you quickly arrive at the conclusion that the entertainment and content received, on a per hour actually consumed basis, is pretty expensive.
That probably explains at least part of the phenomenal growth of Hulu.com – preserving brand identity, star power and network properties. What it does not explain is the kneejerk denial of that content to Boxee.com and TV.com in today’s announcement. It looks like the only thing – aside from making it convenient for consumers to put the selection of Hulu programming on a large flat screen, give them a great user interface, and integration content of all sorts – that it offered was offering it in one place.
It should discourage Boxee from getting any content ideas. But it won’t discourage someone.
