Digital Transition Sideshow Poor Distraction
by Andrew McCaskey
Not Even a Good Sideshow
The switch from analog to digital broadcasting in the US that was scheduled to occur today is history. Or at least in some places it’s history. Most places it’s a political event that just quite does not make the grade.
There are few cities in this country that have moved to all digital – the 691 that did make the switch were located in secondary markets and rural areas, leaving about 2/3 of the existing stations in a patchwork quilt that will take us into the summertime in a mix of analog and digital. All should get resolved by June 12.
It may be that we need this sort of manufactured crisis to take our minds off of more serious business. We know that there will be (eventually) a happy ending of sorts – that the country will be able to make the switch, the re-runs and Judge Judy will rule the daytime airwaves in barbershops and bars. In fact, a year or two ago it actually seemed to be somewhat important.
I’ll bet that not one in 100 gives a rip today – and digital television conversion is so far down on the line of concerns for taxpayers, parents, families and the public at large that it does not even rate as a distraction
