Broadband Stimulus: A Place to Start
by Andrew McCaskey
Let’s See if Clearwire Gets Any Benefit
The dirty rotten secret of slow broadband was pointed out in the Wall Street Journal just a few days ago. It wasn’t technology. It wasn’t finance. It was the fact that our policy has recognized and encouraged a duopoly of one telco carrier and one cable per city. Interleaving rural areas are not event that lucky. The reason that the US is in fifteenth place on broadband penetration and access is simply a comfortable lack of competition that is accepted at both national and state levels.
The most recent WSJ article does speak about the importance of the $3Billion allocated to the National Science Foundation – in contrast the the few hundred of millions that it has received in recent years. That level of commitment is greatly encouraging. In conjunction with efforts to digitize health care documents, there should be a kick in the pants to a large portion of the IT world – and accomplish useful work besides.
The remaining question is what investment could leverage technology and achieve rollout of broadband coverage in the quickest way, jump starting the broadband economy in ways that can only be imagined ? Let’s start with a few $Billion worth of government investment in Clearwire to push WiMax out as soon as possible. You can think of the few $Billion required as the shrimp and truffle budget from an outfit like AIG or some of the banks.
