Google’s Mistake Not Fatal
by Andrew McCaskey
Novel But Not Earthshaking
Discussion in the Silicon Valley Insider implies that Creative Destruction will bring down even the mighty Google. I think that’s an entertaining notion that adds a nod to the emerging importance of search on the “Now Web”. But that is going to be a sideshow, as Google goes about it’s main job as an 800lb gorilla.
John Borthwic makes a very good case aligning his argument with Clay Christensen, author of “Innovator’s Dilemma”. He makes the point that the established enterprise tends to innovate around and alongside their present success, and that for that reason, they are unable to see or defend against truly disruptivce technologies or business models. He begins to pin the label on Google, surrounding the opportunities for search that surround Twitter.
Google’s purchase of YouTube moved search to the next level – making YouTube both a destination and a search engine in good alignment with Google’s core business. The implicaiton was that with Twitter Search (Summize) they missed the boat and planted the seeds for their own eventualy demise.
Great argument, correct, but not, in my opinion anywhere near the fatal error territory. Social networking and it’s immediate application of timeliness and crowdsourcing will eventually (and preseumably) result in news that is both timely and accurate. It is a shame that Google was not monitoring the trend and waiting to pounce. But, with Google in good health and Bay on the sickly list, they may be able to pick up the pieces just about any time they want.
