    More Than a Recession

    by Andrew McCaskey
    Tom Peters Says Not

In his blog entry (which hit the twitterstream a few days ago) guru Tom Peters made a thought provoking assertion: This is not a recession, it is a recalibration.

He distills the change in this way: It’s all different now: how a business generates results, how customers think, what they care about, or who they are. They may actually be different people.

I’m trying to take stock on the content and format of the podcast: Looking at re-calibration among the three topic areas that we address at SDRNews – technology, business and regulatory policy.

Let’s take stock on one: The technology, broadly defined as both enabler of and/or end product or service is, in the short term, continuing on the same trajectory as a year ago.

The time scale is elongated, but the needs for processing power, storage, bandwidth and mobility have, in many situations, increased- not decreased.

Customers act differently because their confidence has been shaken. The business climate thrives on predictability and that’s one attribute that is in very, very short supply.

The individual news items on technology and regulatory policy that get presented each day are striving to find some solid foundation and stability so that some degree of expectations can be set. And, to be honest the sources Slashdot, Digg and Reddit are becoming less productive and filled with even more filler Top Ten lists and pop culture.

It looks like the samples from the news stream are searching for some foundational points of predictiabiltiy, and coming up lacking.

It’s all about figuring what levers to pull, And hoping that they are still connected to something.
