    Social Media Is Flying

    by Andrew McCaskey
    Social Media is Flying

And a critical part of business flying is being replaced by social media.

GoToMeeting has supported Slashdotreview and SDRNews for over three years. But it is only one part of the solution to business travel. On the trip back from CES in Las Vegas I realized why social media, specifically Twitter and LinkedIn where I am active is exploding for business users.

You have to have both online tools to deliver the impact that business travelers enjoyed before the economy tightened and distributed workplace became the norm.

Look around any flight today, and you will see a packed airplane of tired people absorbed in DVD players, PSP, working on laptops, the onflight video or sleeping. What’s largely absent are the serendipitous seatmate conversation that was the norm for passing the time in earlier eras of jet, propeller or train travel among business people – the card exchanges and inquiries if you knew this rep in LA or that customer in Cleveland who used to be a buyer for the firm in Charlotte.

LinkedIn, the business tool shows your distance, friend of a friend relationships – and with the new “is working on ..” feature allows you to replicate that part of business travel and figure how to act upon those connections.

Twitter’s power is revealing the unexpected, along the periphery of your friends, colleagues, business associates and, if you are smart, following the threads beyond your comfort zone. Mr Tweet stretches your mind, and if your tweets are well written, it’s way better than the middle seat conversation.

Without the flopping seat crunching your laptop screen.
