    Clock Ticking for Sprint

    by Andrew McCaskey
    Surely Not Sprint

The combined forces of the White Space Coalition have prevailed – along with some of the Bill Gates level lobbying efforts – and the result has been the FCC’s approval of the use of unused spectrum between assigned television channels., aka “whitespace”

The FCC go ahead permits use of un-occupied channels between 54 and 698 Mhz , operating on a non-interference yet unlicensed basis. A combination of active channel sensing, look up table for authorized transmissions by other users, and location based awareness will permit the unlicensed but type-approved devices to interleave between occupied channels, and create an adaptive mesh data network. That network can compete with existing Cable Modem and DSL delivery service – but it could also destroy one wireless service provider in the process by allying with a handset manufacturer.

This could well be the coffin nail in the fates of Sprint – which has been placing the billion dollar bet on a rapid roll-out of OFDM technology WiMAX. It could not have come at a worse time – just as Sprint is shedding subscribers and the window for Wimax to gain substantial market share narrowing. As Motorola throws it’s considerable remaining resources into full bore Android development, a start-up wireless service provider could emerge, using a white space based technology bypassing conventional carriers could be real possibility.

Whitespace vendors claim that it’s less than a year to operational rollout of devices. Sprint is living on borrowed time.
