Bittorent Morphs Again: But is Chemo the Answer ?
And the RIAA and MPAA are not liking it. At all. And they have friends in the ISP business. And that’s going to be our problem, even if you don’t deal in pirated bits.
The announcement of the Tibbler Bittorrent Client offers a glimpse in the next phase of the Bittorrent Saga. By embedding the directory services in the Bittorrent client itself, Tribbler eliminates the need for a centralized tracker database that verifies the existence of a file and the seed to its initial location. As long as there was a central server, there was a target and someone to target for legal action. Some, like Pirate Bay, have been able to prosper due to their offshore status, but this technology makes them un-needed if push comes to shove.
That leaves only the Comcast Bandwidth Cap approach to prevent continued growth in wholesale trading of movies, music, and software through the Bittorrent networks. The problem is that, much like chemotherapy – the cure may be such a broad-axe approach to the problem that it’s going to be as bad as or worse than the disease.
Consider a one-person New Media site streaming video during the day, and then consuming a few movies by downloadeach week. Add in some streamed music from Pandora, some family videos of a new grandchild, video conferences throughout the evening hours to vendors and colleagues around the world. I don’t care about Bittorrent technology advances but the collateral damage could ruin the entire day. Every day.
