Why Twitter is a Target
by Andrew McCaskey
If there is politics in the air, some Air Cover is needed.
That’s my only conclusion regarding the draft US Army intelligence report that has identified the micro-blogging service Twitter as a potential terrorist tool.
It makes for a great headline. The report identified the popular micro-blogging service Twitter, Global Positioning System maps and voice-changing software as potential terrorist tools. Some of the less obvious tools that were not in the report included automobiles, public transit, cellphones and libraries. The report outlined scenarios in which militants could make use of Twitter, combined with such programs as Google Maps or cell phone pictures or video, to carry out an ambush or detonate explosives.
The report noted that Twitter members reported the July Los Angeles earthquake faster than news outlets and activists at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis used it to provide information on police movements. I might note that forty years ago amateur radio operators faced the same charges, providing information on movement of antiwar demonstrators.
It looks to me that in case of terrorist activity that you would want the terrorists to use Twitter – and push their communications into the open for easy monitoring and tracking.
So if the technical reason is shaky, why the report ? Nothing more powerful than linking a technology with a boogeyman. In case you need to show you were on top of your game.
