Notes on Podcast Awards

First the first time in the past four years, I have decided to participate in the Podcast Awards – People’s Choice program.
Why the change ?Â
I have been honored to be nominated for several of the People’s Choice Award categories in previous years. And, as a matter of personality and principle I have not made any mention or request for votes either on air or on the web site. I am not planning to make a change there.
One other circumstance in contrast to earlier years: As many of you know, I am now podcasting as a full time job. I am also becoming aware of the impact that Awards have from an advertising standpoint and development of search engine traffic. Combine that with the need to build awareness for the new SDRNews brand, and it seemed like an affordable promotion program that I could get behind – as podcast listeners all over the world participated in the nomination and voting process.

Something Else to Think About
One of the things that impressed me is the range of topics covered in the 22 subject categories for Podcast Awards – People’s Choice. Being so tightly focused on business and tech news, that set of blinders keeps me from seeing the larger scope of podcasting.
If you go to iTunes Music Store – and look at the top 100 podcasts – and ask how many of those shows are produced by independent producers ? Just as regular media has been consolidated into three or four owners in Radio and six in Broadcast and cable television, almost all of those podcasts are podcast editions of content that has been produced for over the air distribution.
We should all be thankful that the IP space is big enough for some of us to produce independent content, hope that we have enough sense to provide continued net neutrality so that we have a way to distribute it equitably, and that all of the part-time podcasters – which enabled me to get a start in New Media are able to get some recognition and encouragement along the way.
