GoodBye to Kinkos

The official end of Kinko’s clocked in with the change to FedEx Office. The business press reported that the fondness than many have for the 24 hour copy center from their college days has, in recent years failed to translate into profit. They also report that FedEx overpaid for the roughly 700 retail locations.
The real reason, though was buried between the lines: FedEx – like competitor UPS – is looking for some way to break out of the long term and extremely competitive business of providing enterprise logistics, and move into the higher margins of small business and independent contractors. Offload some of the retail risk to local franchisees, and go for the higher margins that smaller shippers will pay.
The other side ? I value my almost daily trips to the UPS store – since many days, other than spouse and neighbors it’s my only business contact. That’s got to be worth something.
