60 Ghz from Oz – Real Wireless Connectivity

      by Andrew McCaskey
Two items today should remind the US that technical advances are coming fast and furious from other corners of the globe.

First, the 1.5Gbps satellite downlink service from the experimental Japanese launched satellite could offer coverage in rural areas that put the DSL like speeds available in the US for satellite downlink to shame.

Secondly, the 60Ghz millimeter wave designs of the Australian team hold forth exceptional promise for within room communications – and a final end to the wires and cables that seem to continue to be a part of our systems – either entertainment or computer. The Aussie designs are about 5mm square, and in discussion with designers on similar projects in the Bay area, that die, mounted into a package that included it’s own patch antenna array will result in a level in interconnectivity of devices unimagined just a few years ago.

Combine with the third news item today – using the open SDK for the iPhone to develop a presence based social network and socail gatherings might become very, very interesting in just a few years.

Imagine the Cantina Scene in Star Wars with an addional twist: a context relevant version of MySpace that puts up the profile that you desire.

That’s networking, 21st Century style, without that RFID paranoia. Oops. Stir that in, and it’s a different picture.
