      Balancing Out Dirty Bomb Threats

      by Andrew McCaskey
If you have any delusion on the conflict between individual responsiblity and right to privacy of movement and the countervailing need for protection of society, look no further than the item investigated at Purdue University.

Researchers there are proposing that radiation detectors be placed (with minimal cost and weight) into every mobile handset. In combination with GPS or at least Enhanced 911 (E911) triangulation data from cell towers, it would provide authorities with a swarm of data points directly providing information in real time on presence, location, intensity, and movement.

The only downside involves the fact that the device is tied to a cellphone, cell number and owner. It’s not hard to imagine that information in the wrong hands. If a radiation pattern were detected, would authorities want the individuals to move closer for a better reading ? Or move further away for their personal safety, perhaps enabling the placement or deployment of a terrorist device. Who makes the call and who makes the call to the individuals concerned.

That is going to be a hard call to make.
