      Apple and the TV Strategy

      by Andrew McCaskey

Always the early adopter, I’ve got an Apple TV in the family room. I understand that I don’t have too much company, although we have enjoyed some of the capability, specifically watching theatrical movie trailers on the flatscreen. I’v enjoyed some of the YouTube favorites through AppleTV, and if I were better organized in the video podcast arena, I’d get a lot more out of the box than I do at present.

The speculation that Steve Jobs may turn AppleTV from a hobby into a real product has me hoping that my faith has not been misplaced. The short version — Apple 2.0 will slave a drive off the Apple TV – either HD-DVD or BluRay your choice, network it to the Leopard boxes elsewhere in the house, and finally enable flexible downloads via bittorrent to yet another external firewire drive.

I’m waiting for 2.0, and hoping that Apple either decides to make the move with a firmware upgrade, or in the spirit of recognizing early adopters I can at least move this into a purchase credit at the Apple store when the time comes.

The only thing Apple needs to do is make sure that it is not a hotter product than it is now. The box runs very, very warm. If you have one, you know what I mean. The thermal performance is something else and whatever Apple does, they better not work the box itself much harder, unless there is some place for that heat to go.

If Apple does nothing – that’s when I will feel really burned.
