Marketer Polish

by Andrew McCaskey
The timing of the announcement of Huawei LTE-Advanced testing today is way to close to be co-incidental. It shows that the Sprint WiMax CLEAR team are on the ball.

Huawei announced trials and tests of a wireless system for LTE “Advanced” topping 1.2 Gb/sec.
That’s more than ten times realistic FiOS speeds and more than enough to qualify for bottled lightning in most of 48 states. If it were only true.

It seems that the wireless marketers are not learning anything from the companion story this evening from PC World – reporting that most American’s get about 40-45% of the “advertised” speeds for download and upload. Tests of LTE in 2008 peaking at 150 Mb/sec are, in the real world delivering 8 to 12 on Verizon field trials.

The Sprint/ Clearwire / CLEAR venture is not claiming speed records. They are delivering solid 4Mb/sec down and 768k up in the markets where I have used the system.

As a CLEAR subscriber – right now usable only in Chicago, Las Vegas and tiny portions of the Bay Area, I’m rooting for Sprint. They are in an incredible underdog position, but from my point of view the service is great. It works, it’s solid and if you travel more than three nights a month you have paid for it in the savings in exhorbitant wifi at hotels anyway.

Sprint is delivering now, not in tests or projections. IF you travel to any of these areas, give Sprint a chance.
