Technology Catches Up with Finance

Television drama notwithstanding, the announcement that scientists in Israel have been able to create DNA materials from fragments, good enough to impersonate the DNA of another individual has some serious impact on the legal system – which has for the past twenty years set expectations among the public and popular press. It turns out that it’s not as air tight an evidence package as previously thought.

DNA evidence is easier to forge at a crime scene than fingerprints. Defense lawyers have had a field day with fingerprint evidence for years, with the ability to introduce an element of doubt in judge or jury and acquit their client. It looks like DNA is headed in the same direction.

It might be such a bad thing. The reality was that the series of tests typically seen in a single CSI episode would bankrupt the entire budget of most small town or county police agencies, and were not nearly as cost-effective or accurate as Hollywood wished to portray. {sharethis}
