    Asymmetrical Chaos and Cyberwar

Cyberwar in a House of Mirrors

There should be some mainstream media, pundits, and bloggers in the footnote and retraction business this week. There was plenty of discussion about seven news cycles ago on the evil North Koreans and their attack on a whole range of US Government sites, along with plenty of criticism of the administration for ‘allowing’ it to happen. It turns out that the DDoS attack seems to have originated from a botnet master command and control center in the UK, pulling in eight separate second tier botnets that mobilized roughly 167,000 machines for the attacks.

Those machines, in turn, were located in the UK, US, South Korea and Japan, and the smoking gun – if there was one – pointed to a VPN connection to the UK mastermind from a server in Miami, Florida.

The true perpetrator, rogue, or state responsible ? We will probably never know. What we do know is that attacks such as these are not the first nor the last. The challenge is going to be to not only adequately defend our systems and capabilities, but to build in the political restraint to not strike out in retaliation. That’s a “whack a mole” game that works about as well in Cyberspace as it does in the real world.
