Augmented Reality – Business Opportunity

by Andrew McCaskey
Crowdsourced Marketing

There’s a business opportunity right at the tipping point.

The featured video today is from the TED conference – a progress report on the MIT Sixth Sense project. We have been spending a lot of time on Augmented reality the past month or so – but it seems that there is a good chance that we are reaching some sort of tipping point that combines display, geolocation, 3G connectivity speeds and a promising economic model that has something specific that can be sold by an entrepreneur on a local basis. And the best part is that it appears that a clever business person could work around the carrier by combining some or all of the technology through the open internet, perhaps using SMS as an uplink to pass the initial location info.

The MIT project in the video uses the cellphone, a portable projector and camera – instead of projecting it through the phone’s camera viewer, it actually projects it on the object, person or any flat surface.

This might be a close to ideal form of advertising – at least in the beginning the novelty market would provide some initial business and then the branding of this new service would be up for grabs.

Tie that into Tweets each time someone logs on with a new location seeking new info, and your marketing is already in place. Crowdsourced market research from those already using your service, looking for deals.
