Exciting videos again today -
You may recall the item from a few days ago concerning Phillips and the introduction of light emitting fabric – ready for embedding in T-shirt, sofa or jacket. The videos from the show in Germany are in posted on the SDR Group at YouTube.com
The LumaLive fabric – embedded advertisements and changing colors creates without compromise of softness or fabric characteristics. Ready for commecializtion in the promotional industry. Some interesting comments attached to the video as well, wondering just how the market for “I’m with Stupid T-shirts with animated arrows to left or right” is going to react to this major technology advance.
The more interesting video is an animation of a new non-electric Hybrid Engine that promises extensive reduction in emissions and an increase in fuel efficiency. I’m normally pretty skeptical about the $80 mail order device that you insert in the gas line (especially since they used to be $19.95) but this engine seems to have some bonafides, according to Auto Blog.
It also has attracted $1.2Million in Defense Department funding.
The Green Car Congress.com site explains further : The design is an air-hybrid implementation of its split-cycle engine introduced at the SAE World Congress in Detroit in March. Scuderi claims that the air-hybrid system doubles the fuel efficiency of todays conventional engines and reduces toxic emissions by up to 80%—all with a low-cost, easily manufactured design.
The Scuderi Air-Hybrid Engine is adaptable to diesel and gasoline automobiles, commercial vehicles and any other applications powered by internal combustion engines.
The air-hybrid leverages Scuderi’s split-cycle technology by recapturing and storing energy in the form of compressed air. Unlike conventional engines, the Scuderi Engine produces compressed air during its normal operation.
By adding a small air storage tank with some simple controls costing only a few hundred dollars, the Scuderi Engine recaptures energy normally lost during the breaking of a vehicle. This compressed-air system would supplant the motor/generator and battery systems of electric hybrids.
It’s a little over four minutes of animation, and some interesting comments from professional engineers and popular science types like myself.
Wait a minute. No need. My local station is back to only $2.49 a gallon, and I read in the paper that they found a big oil field three days ago off the coast of Louisiana.
