It looks like there is not much new under the sun, at least from the Egyptian news item today. It’s not an area that I am very familiar with, other than from the perspective of modeling active devices for RF wireless applications as a part of the day job responsibilities.
All of us have our professional blind spots, and this is certainly one of mine. A few days ago, I added an animation on a Nanotech Subdermal data display to the SlashdotReview group at YouTube, and that has opened up some new areas for exploration.
Gina Miller is the artist / animator known as Nanogirl at Nanogirl.com . Gina has a variety of exhibits at the Museum of the Future http://www.nanogirl.com/museumfuture/dermaldisplay.htm Her story links through the Discovery Channel , and then through a trade publication called Small Times, a leading source of business information and analysis about micro and nanotechnology.
Now, I warn you that you are about to embark upon a trip down the rabbit hole.
Gina’s site links to Robert Freitas, with whom she collaborated over a six month period to develop the subdermal display animation. Robert is the author of several texts on NanoMedicine, and has online, the complete text of a book on Kinematic Self-Replicating Machines
I am struggling with separating out the science fiction from the science fact- or from the present to the presently possible. In addition to being an essential component of the Space Elevator project (the subject of another YouTube video) nano tech seems to be involved in just about everything.
Carbon nanotubes offer ‘green’ technology for perchlorate removal. Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have demonstrated a new, environmentally friendly process for treating water contaminated by perchlorate, a toxic chemical that has been found in drinking water in 35 states. Nanotechnology being used to improve biocompatibility of human prosthetics and implants. As populations of the world age the current trend is that people are not slowing down in their later years. The desire for increased activity among the elderly also means increased demands on medical researchers to come up with better ways to keep them active. A2Z 8.2.06
Nanodogs could sniff out explosives in terror battle. Welsh scientists have developed a sensor they call a nanodog which is capable of ‘sniffing’ out microscopic low levels of explosives.
There are extensive links to educational resources at the site at nanoindustries.com .
I think that you will find the sites and the animation from Gina Miller to be a fascinating introduction into the Nanotech world.
